a thousand words worth

Isn’t that how it goes? A picture is worth a thousand words.

image

I am hoping this is in fact true. I have been trying to find some quiet moments to share with you all that is going on here.  From all the beautiful knitting we are receiving for the museum, the stories and the community spirit that is creating it,

.imageimage

to seeing the banners and sign in front of the Convention Center,

image

to receiving the Proclamation from the Mayor declaring next week Sock Knitting week in Portland,

image

to all the meetings and the work, the seemingly never ending work.

image

Top it off with a bit of hysteria laced terror and well what a ride.

Steph and I keep equating this experience with childbirth. The similarities are exact and we are now in the pushing phase and pretty soon we are going to have a brand spanking new little Sock Summit.

Uh OH here comes another one gotta go

  4. Nice! That just makes me smile to know that Sock Knitters are being taken seriously in Portland. You and Stephanie and all the SS teams are incredible to have taken this from a crazy-what-if idea all the way to fruitfulness. Portland won’t know what hit them!

  6. I love that the desk looks just like mine.  My husband just said today he can’t wait until there’s a little more room around here.  I told him to wait a week!

I’ve definitely been thinking about this experience for me and by business as child birth.  My dreams have been along the same line.  Truly an amazing experience.  I don’t know if you all will ever know how much this opportunity means to all us little dyers.  Thank you.

  17. Wow, this is so exciting!  I’m so happy for you guys!  It’s HUGE!  And for good measure: !!!!!

I have goosebumps from reading this post, seeing the signage, the mayor’s letter (awesome that he’s named Sam Adams) and since I can’t be there, I plan to make this Sock Knitting Week in my neck of the woods (which happens to be THREE different states this week as I travel for business, work in one state, and live in another) so consider Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois COMPLETELY ON BOARD!

I still wish I could go to Portland…

    November 30, -0001
  18. Congratulations! This is going to be the most amazing thing ever! I love the signs. I love the proclamation. I love the entire SS team.

But most of all I really, really, really love the post-it mobile. You guys are totally rocking the office supplies!

  19. My boss keeps shaking her head as if I’ve lost my mind whenever I mention this. I wish I could send her this blog post, but she’d just think Portland had lost it’s mind.

I’m SO GLAD Portland thinks this is important. I’m so glad you and Steph (and all of ST1&2;) have worked so hard to birth this. It’s going to be amazing and I.JUST.CAN’T.WAIT!

    Hugs(1 million)

I bet those sidewalks will be swarming with sock knitters by this time next week…..

It’s so fun to tell muggles about this:  “I’m going to Sock Summit!” “What’s that?” “See, I won the Sock Lottery…” “There is a Sock Lottery?!?” “Yep, knitters are coming from all over the world.  They’re even taking a stab (hee-hee) at the Guiness Book of World Records!” “The Guiness Book does KNITTING?”

Maybe we should alert the media.  People just don’t get it.  We need to get all CNN on ‘em.

I too am goose-bumpy and teary eyed.  I melted straight into the floor seeing the Sock Smmit banner and name in lights (and not because of the heat or a hot flash this time).  It’s the same feeling I have when I see sheep in a pasture.  I get this goofy smile on my face.

Pure unadulterated happiness. In our own backyard.

It’s going to be awesome.  I can feel it in my bones right to the core.  TOTALLY AWESOME!

  34. Yes!  I am there with you Tan, keep the photos coming so we can all see the history being made!  I am just sick that I can’t be there.  So, I ordered more STR a couple of days ago and I am going do nothing but knit next week to soothe my soul.  I wish you all the best and I will be watching the news and Twitter to follow it all!  Knit on!  And tell Meg Swansen I said hi………

Just came back from the Sock Summit and it was the best knitting event that I have ever been to.  It was extremely creative and extremely wonderful.  I certainly hope we see it again in my lifetime.  I loved it.  Exhausting, overstimulating but wondrous all the same.  If you put this together .. Thank you it was an inspiration.  Happy Shaw Trapp

Great job Tina, Stephanie, and everyone who worked on Sock Summit! You guys are incredible. It was worth all your hard work and pain! I didn’t get to take any classes. Just went shopping on Saturday. But it was glorious!

    November 30, -0001
  43. Here’s why I disagree with the childbirth comparison. I have never been pregnant or in childbirth, but I hear this comparison a lot when comparing other big project work, like writing a book. Frequently people say that writing a novel is like having a baby. Except it’s not.

If you are pregnant and sit on the sofa and eat cheetos for 9 months, you will have that baby just as surely as if you work very hard every day on having the baby. If you are in childbirth, that baby is going to come out, whether you want it to or not.

I think the comparison in terms of blood, sweat, and tears might be apt, but the pregnant/childbirth metaphor overlooks the phenomenal amount of daily work– work that you don’t HAVE to be doing. You could walk away. You could go play World of Warcraft for 8 hours instead of this. You could knit! But instead, you focus your time and attention and dedication to this project, and eventually, if you keep working at it and you’re a little bit lucky, it all comes together.

How about a different analogy? Like training for a marathon. If you don’t do the daily work for 6 months leading up, you probably won’t make it to the finish line.

The show was wonderful for me and for everyone I talked to. Thanks so much for your amazing work on this. It was time and effort well spent.
