Trick or Treat
Smell our wool clad feet.
Give us something sweet to eat knit!!
As most of you know it’s our favorite time of year here at Blue Moon. All the colour and wonder that is autumn from fields full of pumpkins, hay rides through corn mazes, hot apple cider to, last but certainly not least, a little spooky All Hallows Eve goodness.
So…. as mentioned in my earlier post and in celebration of all of these haunted hues, we’ve added to the website, for a short run, Trick or Treat Bags.
As you can see from the picture above, we’ve had a massive amount of fun putting these together for your haunting colour work knit pleasure, we’re considering them as a seasonal offering. I feel you can use these for just about anything your hallowed hearts desire from hats to socks and all they lies between. Even if what lies in between is a skeleton suit or a pumkin cozy. I want a pumpkin cozy!
We also have a little Trick contest and naming game:
Since it is our favorite season we’re celebrating in the way we know best… colour! We have new colourways that are on the website in their normal way, all named and categorized.
What we also have is, 10 new colourways that we’ve hidden throughout the website. These colourways need naming and we thought maybe you’d like to help us with that. After you find them of course. (That’s the trick part.)
Here’s how we envision this working.
The finding part:
The first 4 knitters to find the whereabouts of all 10 wins a 15% off coupon from us. Please submit these on the blog post titled Trick or Treat.
The naming part:
We need names for all 10. You can play by just choosing a name for the one that speaks to you or you can submit names for all 10.
We ask that you only submit one name per skein (each individual colourway).
Submit your choices in the comment section of the the Trick or Treat blog post.
Once you start finding them you’ll see how you can associate and submit the name for that particular colourway. They are marked in a way that will make that easy and obvious. We just don’t want to give too much away.
We learned the last time we did this just how smart you all are. And really we should’ve known.
The Treat part! What’s in it for you? Well…there’s the glory of your chosen name on our yarn. If that is not enough you can choose between the skein you’ve named or a 10% off coupon for the website. And as always our undyeing gratitude .
The Trick and Treat contest runs from today (Thursday October 18th) to Wednesday October 24th at 2:00 pm Pacific time.
I, your depravedDyer will then have my wicked way with your name choices. I love this part!!
And yes the new colourways are available to purchase as their as of yet unnamed selves.
Remember we are a very tightly plied bunch here so the wackier and weird the name the better. You can explain your reasoning behind your name choices. We love a good story.
Paula and Heather do request that the names be no more than 5 words long. It has to fit on a yarn band.
I think that covers it. As always email with any questions
May the naming force be with you!
Happy (almost) Halloween
Your Blue Moon Witches!
ps. Do you know what kind od closet out Witchy poo is knitting in and then what that means about the yarn cake?

Mythology is fun.
1 – Loowit, a Puyallup mountain goddess seen as an old woman. She wept for being transformed to an old woman, and a great leader with the power of immortality bestowed the gift upon her. Upon changing to a beautiful maiden, the leader’s sons fought for her love and Loowit, unable to choose between them, was punished by the god Sahale and transformed into the mountain we know as St. Helens.
2 – Bakwas, Kwakiutl king of ghosts. He haunts the forests, appearing to be small and green, with a crooked nose, and tries to lure the living to his realm.
3 – Ab’shustek. A Duwamish legend of Lake Sammamish says that brave warriors invaded from the east, across the mountain. They terrified the Duwamish, and to protect them, the spirits changed the Yakamah warriors into a stand of strong and beautiful trees that were still painted with small patches of red war paint.
4 – Bear Mother, the origin of the Haida tribe’s Bear Clan, was a well-to-do woman who was kidnapped by a village of bears. She married one and loved him very much. Her human brothers, though, came to rescue her, and her bear husband sacrificed himself to save her. Her children (and all the children after) had a deep understanding and ken with bears from there forward, thus creating the Bear Clan.
5 – Sisiutl, the Kwakiutl god in the form of a sea serpent, who turns all adversaries to stone. He has three heads, and has been known to transform to a mythical war canoe to aid in sea battles.
6 – Malahas, the evil forest goddess from Klikitat mythology who steals children into the forests.
7 – Tsequiami, from the Kwakiutl, who is an old man who emerges from a tree, and who helped the heroic ancestors by placing large spruce beams for them when building.
8 – Thunderbird, lord of the winter dance season in Kwakiutl tribes, who is a massive supernatural bird whose wing beats cause the thunder, and the flash of whose eyes causes lightning.
9 – Deer Woman, from several Northwest Tribes (among others). Half woman, half deer, with vibrant blue eyes and the body of a whitetailed deer. Seeing her was a sign of great personal transformation.
10 – U’melth is the Raven, who brought the Kwakwaka’wakw people the moon, fire, salmon, the sun and the tides. He flies in a clear blue sky and alights in the deep evergreens.

The 10 new colours are all fabulous, but two names jumped to me:
#8 – Isle of Capri
(Capri Island in Italy – you go by small boat to these caves off the water. the light reflection drives so many different shades of blue that it is nothing you could describe). You have captured those colours so perfectly that it brought back that memory of nearly 30 years ago.

(for the mountain in Vancouver, BC – the colour eminated the spirit of this mountain for me)

My daughter Anna has worked five years on trail crew at Mt. Rainier National Park. Looking at these yarn colors brought to mind the amazing and unique colors of the wildflowers, the fungus, the forest floor, the meadows, the trails – all of the amazing and unique landscapes of Mt. Rainier. The colors you used in these bring to mind the deep indescribable blue of glaciers and the changing sky, the artful colorations of fungus and lichen on old growth, and the impossible colorations of Ohanapecosh. So that’s what I named them after. I reviewed pictures of hers and my own, plus cruised the internet for images, and based my names on seasonal representations at Mt. Rainier. Because two rangers died there this year in the line of duty I thought about naming a color for each of them but wasn’t sure if memorial yarn colors were appropriate. So anyway, here’s my suggestions, and I can back them up with links to photos when I’m not quite so sleepy….
