Bright Spots
The bright spot of my summer is this weekend. My son Narayan is marrying his sweetheart Candice this Sunday.
My son! ( See Steven and Deb he’s not a myth.)
Narayan is my oldest and this is our families first wedding. We are happy, excited and slightly crazy with it all, as I’ve been assured, is exactly how it usually is with a wedding, so we’re right on track. It’s going to be a wonderful day. I’m so excited that I woke up at 3:00 this morning and just could not get back to sleep, even counting colored sheep didn’t work and it usually does. I did some color scheming planning for the next few months so at least was productive.
Speaking of color schemes, we decided in the barn this week that it was time for a contest. It’s been awhile and we are a bunch of women who like our games and contests. This one is kind of both. After our last naming contest we had a few of you write in and suggest that it might be fun for you to submit a name and maybe a description ( brief) of what you have in mind and that I come up with a colorway for that name. I love this idea. It’s a bit of a challenge and I am a woman who likes a challenge.
So here is how I think this will work best. In the comments section of this blog post put the name you are suggesting and a brief hint or description of your intent. If you feel the name is enough or want to see what I do with just the name that is also okay.
We’ll start today and take name submissions until next Friday. Then we’ll pick 20 and post them on Monday, then you get to pick your top 5, which you’ll do in the comments section of that blog post.
The winning 5 get a skein of their winning colorway in the yarn base of their choosing.
Sounds like fun doesn’t it. We did something like this with the sock club and it was great fun. I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Ready, set… go!
PS: My buddy Steven was visiting when the Tipsy’s came out and fell for Sadie Sue so we wound up a ball and he started knitting some socks.

Hi, me here!
I have been thinking up names for new colorways ever since
you mentioned that you were coming up with some new blues in a blog
several weeks ago, so most of these are definitely blue suggestions and others
are ‘Moony’ or a play on words, here we go…
Na-vi Blue – (from Avatar, sounds like navy blue)
BLUEmin’ SKEINdelous
Pitter PatTINA (goes my heart) – because colors effect you and us that way!
Singin’ In The Skein
Neon Jungle – just came into my head one day
Blue Huey
Blue Glass Vase – love that pristine, sharp, electric blue
MOONscapade – Anything goes here I think!
Water wheel – watery blues / splashes of ferny greens
Periwinkled – ?
Bluetopia!
Love EWE! – Could be the colors of love or just an awesome mix!
I hope that gets the ball (of wool) rolling!
I needed a competition like this to cheer me up, thank you Tina 😉
Sorry!
The 6th one down is meant to be Bluey Huey. It doesn’t matter how hard I
try not to make a mistake one always gets through.
And I thought of a partner color to go withe Love EWE! … Love EWE Too!
Maybe an idea too far?
Love this game!!
Here are my suggestions …
Ruby Slippers
The Absence of Yellow
Relentlessly Curvilinear
Beloved of the Sky
Bunny Kitten
Slip Sliding Away
Going All Kandinsky
You Say Madrone, I Say Arbutus
I forgot to add that I’ve included no descriptions, cause I’d love to see Tina just go for it!!
Wicked – Like the musical – greens and blacks
Lavender Fields in the Mist
The purples of lavender, some green from the fields, in a gray-lavender mist in the morning.
I’m watching an old episode of Dragnet and it gave me an idea.
“Watchin’ the Tube”. For colors, think old vintage issues of TV Guide.
1. The grass is always greener (inspired by lawn mowing, summer days, horses sticking their heads through the fence)
2. Lobster Dinner (need I elaborate?)
3. S’Mores (yuhhmm)
I would love to see a colorway that uses Mulberry and Nyame. They are next to each other on the website and I think they would be beautiful with a pale grey or maybe a creamish color. I was thinking maybe “glorious garden” or “gazing ball” (the colors remind me of the gazing ball in my front yard.
WAIT WAIT! Not Nyame. Neptune. NEPTUNE AND MULBERRY.
Best best best best wishes to Narayan and Candice and may you have ~ all of you ~ an enchanted and special celebratory weekend! I would love to see what you think NARAYAN looks like in a colourway, but anothor more wildly fantastic idea perhaps is CHROMATICITY , which is a word I’d suggested for the second Sock Summit Marketplace. Someday I’ll figure out all of the colors of me, and then. I’ll ask you to conjure up an ERICA! :o) Much Love and all my best,
-e
In the heat of the night?
Defying Gravity?
idea #1: cricket (would love to see what you come up with for that)
or, maybe since we’re in the thick of things here in the northeast, and it’s year 17….. idea #2: Cicada (Scientific name: Cicadidae)
Taking inspiration from the tulip combinations I had in my spring garden.
Might I suggest a combination with dark purple (e.g. Smoke on the Water), bright red, white, and a hint of green.
For names, jewel tones suggest bold and sassy but white suggests a touch of elegance. So, I offer ‘Keep It Classy’ or ‘A Passionate Lady’.
So Agatated – the colors of all the agates found on Oregon beaches – creamy whites, slate greys, jasper orangy-reds, grey-greens, bright yellows on a sandy background
Blue Merle Cosmo – biased toward the colors of my Cardigan Welsh corgi – complex dark and light slate greys with intense punches of black, white, darker grey, with a bit of red brown and sky blue for his eyes
My favorite Summer flower is hydrangeas. How about “Heavenly Hydrangeas” from the palest green to cheery pinks, crisp blues and soft purples. Gorgeous!
Pollywog – reptilian whimsey
Hey Man! Oh, Yeah! 1920s New Orleans Jazz Club dancing all night.
Seattle Sunbreak
My first post was a colour combo suggestion because I’m really, really looking for those colours in a variegated yarn (hint, hint). But I also have some names to suggest:
Aeval: Fairy Queen of Ireland. Symbolizes a mix of justice and sexuality. Holds a midnight court every season to determine if Irish husbands are serving their wives sexual needs:)
Oxymandias: King of Kings, megalomania, forgotten glories, rise and fall of power (the subject of a sonnet by Percy Bysshe Shelley).
Hell’s Belle (Sweet and wicked all-in-one).
Anne Bonny: In honour of the most famous of female pirates.
I would like
A scone with cream and blackberry jam please!
How about Sundae Swirl? All the colors of a ice cream sundae with a maraschino cherry, of course!
SC&P – a 70’s romp of burnt orange meets mustard yellow with some natural peaking through.
Strawberry Shortcake – cake + whipped topping + berry = nom on fiber
Faamished – this means confused in yiddish. Colors of your choice
Nebula- dark blues with hints of whites
Strawberry Truffle – Pink, Brown, and Cream
This is colorway I have wanted for a long time 🙂
Here are my colorway suggestions:
Beluga
Mariachi
Moody
Deep Silence
A deep evergreen forest where the only sound is the wind. Cool shadows welcome you. The trees are tall with soft friendly bark. Fir incense. Peace.
Aww, man! I totally misread and gave too much! I’ve got words, though!;-)
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey
Sploosh
Free to Disagree
Twitterpated
Banana Slug (so Oregon-y, you know)
Beer-Thirty
Tea and Crumpets
Just for starters…
Brewfest
Berry Picking
For our weather in AZ – “Haboob” (look it up!)
that mile high wall of dust and sand; deep twilight gray light as the sun is blocked out; rain turning the dust to mud, followed just the touch of clear sky blue as the break comes.
Enjoy the video – or be so afraid!
sorry video did not post
I think we need a NW color line….
Peace Candle: Red/orange/yellow/white
St. johns Bridge: Green-blue / rust
Old Town: green, red, white ( or actually whatever colors that sign has nowadays)
Cloudy Days: Black/gray/white
Lewis & Clark : browns/greens maybe some white for snow
Mt. St. Helens : blue, white, sparkles… Or, could be red with sparkles
Space needle: black, white, sparkles
Columbia river valley: blue for water, green for surrounding forests and maybe some pink shade for the salmon
Etc… The list is endless!
Old town could actually be in ‘neon’… looks like the 80s are back in stores =)
Summer Scoops (ice cream)
Congrats to the happy couple and the exhausted parents 🙂
May you have a million blessings in your new life together, Candice and Narayan!
Representin’ the Southernmost state in the contiguous US, how about Moon Over Miami or Florida Keys? You could go CRAZY with those Tina!
Looking at pictures of my trip of a lifetime to Africa………..
Safari
bright blue sky
red dirt roads
dusty sage acacia trees
tan/gold grasses
Congrats to the fam-damily! Some names:
Children of the Moon (One of my all-time favorite Alan Parsons Project songs. The lyrics are fairly somber, but the song reminds me of floating in space.)

Dean Jones (What’s the color of ‘wholesome’?)
-Meg
Space Station Mystery
* Calm Before the Carnival
* Mr Fox
* Silverback Gorilla

I have a great picture of the colors I like, but I can’t get them on here.

So many ideas..
Woulda Coulda Shawarma
We’re Engauged!
Ya Sure Ya Betcha
Lime Gin Fizz
Hot to Trot
Better with Bacon
I read this post yesterday while sitting with my Mom in the hospital. All I wanted to do was wrap her up in some “positive energy” to get through this.
I thought that would be a good name, something warm and soothing all at the same time.
fall in the pond or fall across the pond – predominately pond scum with red-orange, yellow-orange, brown and perhaps a touch of dark green or dark blue. pond scum rocks! fall in the northwest!
Whopper Jawed
Step and Fetch It
Stars and Garters
I have two suggestions for you. The first is “Blue Bayou”. I picture this as mostly blue with hints of green and maybe some other bayou-esque colors. The second is “Clockwork Orange” which would be shades of orange (obviously), white, and gray.
Running Water
A brook rippling over stones. Gleaming. The essence of water, fluid, ever-changing, clear. A bare hint of sky. Cool and refreshing on a day that’s a little too hot.
Let’s celebrate the women’s right to vote amendment (XIX) which was ratified 93 years ago (August 18, 1920) and strong women in general – name the color Elizabeth Cady Stanton or Susan B. Anthony (go with a woman/year color up to 1920), or it could always be called “We’ve come a long way, baby.” I don’t do colors. Tina, you’re the depraved dyer; you can find colors that say ‘strong and resolved.’ I mean guys are great (the second one I married is really super), but we’re pretty much gals/women on this blog so let’s celebrate us and all the things we do.
Congratulations to your family! Perhaps a psycho-babble theme: Roadless Travel, Sifting Sands, Watery Realms, Mythic Masks, Heavens Corridor……and Your Wonderful Imagination! Best to you!
dear Tina,
Congratulations 🙂
My first offering is: a colourway inspired by the Mary Oliver poem “Wild Geese”. This poem has a very special place in my heart, and I would be very interested to see where you take it.
Thank you for all of your beautiful work 🙂
Kirsty
Shakespeare in the Park
Gettysburg
How fun!
Only one name really comes to mind:
Ada Leigh Tipsy – I see her as having a fiery personality that hides behind the sweetness of her name. A well meaning girl, but a bit of a firecracker (in a good way). Oh, and she has a bit of a temper…
My name suggestions
“Crabby Day” for the Maryland Blue crab which turns red when steamed.
“Summer Sangria”- White sangria with lots of fruit/berry colors.
Allo and congrats, my suggestion for naming that gorgous colour is:
Data
For Trekkies:
Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you’re in love, my how they fly
Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see
It’s the Irving Berlin song Data sang at Troy and Riker’s wedding.
😉
Nardwuar
A Trip Through the Keys.
My thoughts are this: When you drive through the Florida Keys, the water looks AMAZING. There are all kinds of shades of blue and green and even a little purple.
Blue Paisley
Thoughts: dark blue, bright blue, turquoise, a not quite olive green and a bright green . The inspiration: Vera Bradley’s retired pattern: Rhythm & Blues
Daily Dose of C–grapefruit, tangerine, lemon and lime!
Olive Juice
Stash Diving-a plethora of colors
Derby Girl–Black and brights
Treasure Trove
Garden Grove
Sugar N Spice
Frogs and Snails
Crocodile Tears
Gator Bites
Sorry me again, I really want to see a pink Tipsy, maybe
Rosella Marie Tipsy she’s everything sweet and kind but with a bit of mischievous spunk!
What can you do with Clovis Leon Tipsy
or Octavias Sabine Tipsy?
OK I think I am done!!
My second offering is: CaramelEYES
I am thinking here of caramels, yellows, splashes of violet, and maybe a bit of dark brown. Caramelized violets.
I hope the wedding was wonderful!!
My colorway name suggestion is: Antiquated System (like we talked about before!)
Might I also suggest: Tamara (
Something messed up!!
I suggested Tamara (would love to see what you do for that!!)
Hi me again,
I have been trying to come up with a special colorway name for the
‘Rockin Whorl Club’, how about Rockin’ All Over The Whorled.
Fish have such beautiful colors and would have fun names.
Rainbow trout
Koi
Angel fish
Ginger Plum-licious
I have a Satsuma Plum tree in my backyard and just finished canning some. The flesh color is a beautiful deep red, the skin is reddish maroon over green, then combined with the golden hue of the candied ginger….Beautiful and oh so tasty!
Glenda: Pink and White and happy like a cherry blossom
Dead Man’s Party: Necrotic Blue, Rot Black, Grey (for fun)
Knuckle Dragger: Like the jumpsuits on the flight deck of Galactica (aka the gift shop): orange
“Lemon Pesto”
I love fresh pesto + one year I grew lemon basil to make it, so:
greens for the basil
yellow for the lemon scent
cream for the parmesan cheese
and there are pine nuts too….
mmmmmm!!!!
Deadliest Nightshade-leafy green, with berries that turn from pale green to dark purple.
The Green Fairy-the colors of old absinthe posters
Emma Rose Tipsy- the sweet baby-cotton candy pinks, a pastel version of the Rosella Marie
Rattlesnake grade – a hillside colored like the snake, hot summer skies, dry dusty evergreens anh just a hint of water at the bottom
Grande Rhonde – winter yellowed grass poking through the snow and a sun dog caught in the early morning fog at the bottom of the canyon. Vivid brilliant pasrels. Is this even possible?
Clearwater or Koos koos kia – the NezPerce name for the river. Literally water water river, water so pure a pool 20 feet deep looks like you could reach down and pick up that yellow rock on the bottom. Deep canyons, wide rippley shallows, fast white water, deep green slow water, white sand, black, brown red yellow pink green rock, gold and gemstones live here. Deer and bear drinking at twilight.
Purple beans
Okra- don’t forget those brilliant blossoms.
Playin’ cards on the river- whatcould be more relaxing? Favorite swimsuit, old tube, floating along with friends
All cats are gray – in the dark. Those shades of gray just before it’s too dark to see any color at all.
Mutabilis- the butterfly rose, pink buds open to show 4 creamy peach petals that darken a bit every day to a deep rich plummy pink. Glossy dark green foliage
eh, spelling
Vivid brilliant pastels.
One more
Sun Glass- the lavendar purple of old glass jars left out in the sun.
sizzlin summer – shades of red and yellow to show how hot its been this summer
Sunset on the Lake — when the lake has relaxed from the white light of the day and the clamor of boat engines, waterskiers, children swimming and playing, to a hush punctuated only by the soft lapping of the gentle waves against the shore. A glass of Chardonnay as the sun begins to slip behind the hills on the far shore, turning mellow shades of yellow and peach as it fades into the summer night.
