MidWinter Moon MKAL

MIDWINTER ICONS copy

Welcome to our MidWinter Moon Mystery Knit-a-long with the creative and talented Larissa Brown
What a lunar year we’ve had; one filled with all kinds of lunar magic, beginning with a Super Total Lunar Eclipsed Blue Moon as the second Blue Moon of the year… and we hadn’t even left January! We are closing out the year with an equally magical celestial event: our last full moon of the year will happen on the Winter Solstice! So while our days are darkening into the longest night of the year, our moon is waxing full and shedding a little light into that darkness!
This wrap – delivered in four weekly clues – will reflect and celebrate the exchange of dark and light. Clue #1 drops December 7th, in time for you to knit exactly half your wrap by the Winter Solstice. Colors and patterns will span from dark night sky or winter sea to pale moon, expressing the meaning of deep winter for each of us and the promise of coming spring. A Solstice color between the two gives light to the darkness, like luminaria lighting a night path, candles in midwinter, the Northern Lights, or sunrise as the days gradually lengthen.
The form will be mysterious, a joy to knit, and beautiful to wear, at a size that fits in with holiday crafting – not a shawlette, but not as big as a “shlanket.” Expect a doable amount of knitting per week, and a skill level suitable for a beginner-with-a-friend, or beginner-with-help from your lovely LYS.
I love the idea of knitting the light into the darkness stitch by stitch. What an uplifting and beautiful way to celebrate the this Winter Solstice’s Full Moon and shine a little light out into the world!
We’ve come up with kits based on Larissa’s design and the moons of the year. Most cultures have names for the full moons in each month, so we’ve themed out kits based on some of those moons and the colors they inspired.
Each kit includes a trio of Sock that Rock Lightweight skeins in a light (or bright)-to-dark color sequence so we can gradually work our way back to the light. A coupon code for 10% off is good from now until November 14th. We have a short window of time to get you your kits for cast-on on December 7th, so the sooner you order the better! If you order after the 15th, we will still do our very best to get it to you on time but we can’t guarantee it. We have also come up with a few kits that are exclusive to Twisted, so be sure to check those out too!
I am so over my lunar-obsessed self about this MKAL. I have found a kindred moon spirit in Larissa and it has just been all kinds of fun dreaming this all up with her and Emily at Twisted.
I hope you’ll join us as we knit a little light into the world!

Magical Houses

Look what I did!!  I am pretty tickled with these. As those of you who are in the sock club already know this has been the year of magic!  One really cannot celebrate magic without paying homage to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy and all of the wonderful and not so great characters and their battle between good and evil. Honestly I was torn as to which way to go but then I thought about the houses and their colors and what they stood for and  it just hit home (pun intended) for me.

The only drawback was the colors to the club are usually exclusive. So I checked with a whole bunch of the club members and they were of the mind that the fun and houses were more important to them than the exclusivity. So here they are for us all to enjoy!!

Which house are you?? I am Ravensclu but I have to say I seriously LOVE how the Hufflepurls color cam out. I think I am on a yellow kick lately.

I so want house socks!! I feel like someone (hint hint) needs to come up with a house sock pattern. What do you think? I love the idea!! Anyone game? Cristi???

Weekend Special And we are running a 9% off code this weekend to celebrate reaching our 9000 instagram follower reached on Friday!!! If you do not follow us please do. I post so very many color and yarn pics there you don’t want to miss those. Oh and chickens and kitties too.

I am seriously possessed by color. I think about it all the time. Last year when we were dyeing massive amounts of shaded solids on our Cake DK base for Carol Feller’s Camira KAL I had a color idea. What sparked this idea was the amount of grey we were dyeing. So many knitters order grey!! And fair enough, its a great neutral and looks pretty great on most of us. I wear tons of grey with a little black thrown in for good measure. hehehe!

We have quite a few greys also, from our dark Deep Unrelenting Grey to our very, very pale Winter Solstice. I got to thinking how nice it would be to have greys that had just a hint ( tint ) of another color to them. Wouldn’t that just make the most stunning garment. The color would be mostly grey but with swirls of “other” color through the grey. Just enough color to be visible but not enough to take over where you could not see the grey. One of those fine color lines!

It’s taken almost a full year to make to where I was happy with that fine line! And I am. Also pretty excited to add to our coven! So why The Coven and wild witchy women? Well… first of all, I have a thing for magic and witches. My grandmother was the witchiest woman I knew so I can dedicating these to my Winnie. And yes, there will be a Winnie in our Coven I have just not settled on her tint yet. She would so love that I had not settled on her tint. I can hear her now…cackling away at the idea of making her a color. She had the best cackle ever! I think it was a combo of the Maxwell House all day long with a little Jack Daniels thrown in after 3 and the non filter Camel cigarettes. Boy do I miss her. Maybe a coffee colored tint. Hmm… .

Anyway…I see our Coven being good for just about any knitting whatsoever. Where I really see casting there subtle spells is in garments, especially. So many sweater patterns out there that these would be so beautiful. It’s almost like a, “you can have your cake and eat it too” moment. Since you can have your grey but with a little color peaking through. I’m pretty tickled with these. I hope you love them!

If you have any witch names or ideas I would love to hear them!

Hocus Pocus!! It is the 25th Anniversary of the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus so of course we had to celebrate that with a witchy tribute those wacky Sanderson sisters!!

Okay my lovelies I have to go pack and ship Moon Shadow Anniversary packages! Package up Our of the Hue and edit the last part and dye and clean the chicken coop and maybe the house a bit. Valla my very long haired Norwegian Forest cat is shedding and there are big clumps of cat hair everywhere!!!

I know I should not say this out loud because it will most probably jinx it but next week we are going to be caught up in a way that will let me sleep at night!!! Again thank you so much for your patience!! I have a lot to say about our industry changes that are happening and coming our way so stay tuned for that! What I can advise is that now is not the time for stash busting. It is the time for stash enhancing!

Oh I almost forgot! How could I forget! I met the new neighbors last night. I was driving down the drive and they had a fire going and were roasting hotdogs and marshmallows. I know. The have 2 adorable and friendly pooches and…( wait for it) she is a KNITTER!!! Yes!  Happy dancing!

They want fiber animals and we had a great chat and I am so very, very, very thankful!

Thank you for all the good vibes you sent my way!

Seriously… like love it!

***********************

Like pretty much everything about it…

I love designing yarns. I love spinning yarn. I love testing each new lot of yarn for consistency. I love reeling yarn. I love winding it into little balls or big cakes. I really love making yarn colorful by dyeing it.  I love all the weights and measure of yarn. I love getting to know all about a yarns story and what it wants to be. I love matching yarn to project. I love swatching! I really do love swatching to make sure I havethe right yarn and gauge for my project. I love that there is a worsted weight yarn and a worsted spun one. I love that a lot of yarn is twisted, a bit like me! I love the diversity of what we can use to create yarn. I really love wool yarn from all those lovely sheepies! I love the feel of yarn when I am making and wearing it. I  love really love the smell of it. I love the people I work with in the yarn industry. I love the mechanics of the yarn industry and it’s history. I love all the fiber artists I get to work with who also love yarn! I love that working with yarn and creating beauty is good for our brains, hearts and souls. I love that yarn brings us together ~ a stunning tapestry of  a community ~ loop by loop!!

All for which is really great to remember today on YARN Day and also, at a time when our industry and world is experiencing some trying times.

Today we are going to celebrate the love and yes, power of YARN!

We are going to start with some fun!!

Insta-Game ~ (Facebook)  with prizes!

I am going to post my little “what I love about yarn” paragraph to Instagram and would love for you to comment as to what you love about yarn!! I will randomly pick 10 of you who comment there with your “share yarn love” and send each a skein of Socks that Rock. Oh I will also post this to facebook so if you comment there it also counts toward being eligible for a prize.

We are also offering a YARN LOVE Discount

Starting right now (Saturday, October 13th) we are offering a 13% discount on All YARNS good until midnight Sunday (Pacific Time). Use the code: YARNLOVEDAY18 when you check out to get your discount!

I also would love to see what you are knitting with your Blue Moon yarns. If you could post a photo to instagram with the hastags #bluemoonfiberarts  and #yarnday so we all can see your creations that would be so wonderful. I can’t tell you how much it brightens our day when you share what you have made with us. After all you are why we do what we do. Otherwise we are just making and coloring yarn to hang in the barn and that is kinda silly!

What is next weekend??

As I have said quite a bit during the past few months I am very grateful for you understanding and patience. I am doing my very best juggling dealing with all of the yarn stuff and communicating with you about where we are. We are a very small company and a little smaller than normal right now. So if you have not heard back from em right away it is not because I do not value you. It is seriously just juggling all the yarn balls and making it all work. I personally truly value each and every one of you. I love being a dyer but I also equally love serving you!!

Okay I am sure there is more but I need to go do some shipping!!

Have a lovey weekend!!

Fall colors abound but October is PINK!!

Wow!!

IMG_2799

Look at that, October sure sneaked right in the back door didn’t it. I feel like I totally lost the last week of September. Where did it go?

Anyway since it is October and October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. As most of you know I am a breast cancer survivor. I am the daughter of a breast cancer survivor. I have friends who are survivors and ones whom I have lost. At this point in time I think that most of us have been touched by breast cancer in one way or another. The strides that have been made in breast cancer research over the past few years are just astounding.

We are donating, as we do every October, 10% of sale to breast cancer research. I have creating a few new colorways in honor of all us breast cancer warriors! As I posted last week one of my best friends passed 5 years ago on September 26 so the F*CK Breast Cancer is especially for her!

There are also quite a few more very pink colorways on the website. One of my favorites is Tit4Tat.

Here are the links to these new colorways:
