Your 10 day color wish list.

Here is your 10 day colorway wish list. They went live yesterday (Thank you Paula!!)

Dye Days Registration

As promised… Dye Days Registration is LIVE

Seasonal shift…

…at least where color is concerned.  It’s cool and damp and most of us would like to see a little more of that bright shining day star and the warmth that comes with it.  As much as I’ve wished it to be different, it is still cloudy and damp. I can’t control the weather, even though I have given it a go, a time or two. I am a firm believer in that adage –  where there’s a will there’s a way .I don’t think my will is  up to the task, cause try as I might there’s still a grey weepy sky today instead of a cherry sunny one.

What I can control with the power of my mind is color on yarn, most of the time.  So… below you’ll find a list of the hues that are going to the color spa for a rest. Don’t panic they are not going away forever. We will take them down on Monday the 17th. So if you absolutely need some of them to come live at your house then you have a few days to make that happen.  If there a colorways of ours you’d like to see for the summer please let us know in the comments section of this post. We will put all of your suggestions up for about 10 days at which point, some will come down, and others will stay. And yes, I will tell you which colorways are staying and which are only there for that week. We had a ton of fun with this last color change, so we’re pretty excited about this one.

Amelie  *  Atomic 6  * Aurora Borealis * Azure Malachite * Beached * Becky Sue * Bleeding Hearts * Blue Brick Wall * Calico

Chickabiddy  * Cluck Chimes at Midnight * Coppertree * Crabby McHappypants * Cracked Canyon * Debra Anna * Drop Dead Sexy

Freudian Slip * Fumbling Towards Ecstacy * Gibson * Guppy * Hawthorne * Holly Go Lightly * Iolite * Jabberwocky * Just Jack

The Kracken * Lucky * Lunasea * On Blueberry Hill * Peaseblossom * Petunia * Pop Rocks * Potomac * Queen Rock * Saratoga

Sedona * Serenity * Sky Pumpkins * Spot Rock One * Strange Brew * Sunnyside Up * The Claw * Time Space Continuum Rip

Tumblescum *  Rue de Pond Scum * Easter Scramble

I’m so excited because in two days we start Interval our mystery KAL with our buddy Star Athena. I kind of wish I didn’t know what it was so I could be surprised with all of you. Although after seeing all the wonderful color combo’s leaving here I think that is going to be the surprise at the end for me. I can’t wait to see them all. As I was packing boxes this past weekend I kept marveling at all of the varied and stunning duos. Had I not been on a deadline and a mission I would have photographed every single one of them.  I can’t wait to see them all.

All of the regular BFL Fingering has shipped,  it left early Monday morning. The new orders this week of the BFL Superwash Fingering we are working on. we’re doing our best in getting those out as fast as we can. We assume that if you ordered at this late date you are not real concerned about starting this Friday.   As always if you have questions or concerns please do email us: info@bluemonfiberarts.com

The next few weeks are going to be a blur for me.  I’ll try my best to check in but… .

Rabia, my middle child and oldest daughter, is graduating from college. Yay Rabia!! We’re very excited and so very proud of her, especially the me of we. Then a few weeks after that, my oldest child and only son, Narayan, is GETTING MARRIED!!!  It’s our first wedding and we are bursting with it all. I  am seriously enjoying my mother of the groom role. Mostly because it involves wrangling my son into what he needs to be doing. Since as his mom I kinda excel at that job (tons and tons of practice) all is as it should be. Although just between you and me it is a bit like herding goats.  I get another daughter out of this deal, which is all kinds of awesome. I love, love  love his beloved, Candace.  She’s already a part of our family  this puts a nice finish on it all.

So big things for the Newton clan.  On a personal level for me it’s really nice to have all of of this light and happy beginnings part of life to celebrate.

Oh… I almost forgot, speaking of beginnings!

Keep an eye out for our Rock’n Whorl Spinning Club announcement in the next week.

I promised Paula and Debra that I’d mention the Barn Sale and Days Save the Date. It’s the first weekend in August.

Off to the barn to make new colors and room for the 10 baby chicks coming our way today.

Mystery Bags and Interval Hues

Starting today at 1:00 pm Pacific time we are holding a Mystery Bag sale.  We started this last summer when we had mill ends pouring out of our ears. Unfortunately mills ends are just a fact of life in our industry. Sometimes you have a whole lot and sometimes not so much. I prefer the not so much. This year is better then last year by far. Yay for progress!

Anyway… we dump them all in any bin we can find and I have my hue matching way with them. It actually makes me feel a wee bit better about having mill ends and has given me all sorts of paring ideas you’ll see soonish.  Definitely a silver lining in every cloud if you know where to look.

As I said in the newsletter and on the product page for these, they go pretty fast, especially the lightweight.

Here’s the link to the product page. Jess and I will make turn on the ordering at 1:00.

Have you noticed that theme of the past few weeks is mystery. I have and as someone who had all kinds of  not so fun surprises this week there is a good side and a not soo good side to mysteries. I feel like we took care of more challenging side already so now onto the colorful goodness.

Our Interval Mystery KAL dyeing is moving right along.  We have fixed our BFL Fingering issue. You can read more about that in the previous blog post.  If you ordered before June 4th at 2:00 pm then you will receive the BFL Fingering. We are able to fill all the orders we took for it. We then turned it off and problem solved as only knitters can. While we are waiting for our new shipment of BFL Fingering we decided to offer this yarn I’ve been thinking about bringing in. BFL Fingering Superwash as an alternative and we put that up with a note on the website.  It’s a really nice yarn in it’s own right. My only hesitation on offering it as a regular Blue Moon yarn is that I feel hard and fast for the other one and having 2 BFL Fingerings seemed a bit much.  So my dear knitters, you fall head over heels over this yarn do let me know.

Earlier in the week before the proverbial poo hit the fan I promised Chrissy some more hue duo pics. Chrissy here they are, sorry for the delay!!

Ok I am off to the barn to pack and ship and pack and ship and pack and ship.

Hope everyone has a lovely colorful weekend!

Interval KAL update and more…

So very much more. Holy cow this day has exploded into all kinds of craziness.

It’s so amazing when that happens right? You’re going along all efficient and happy, getting stuff done making plans even,  then boom an ugly email shows up from the what looks like Paypal and it’s not. It’s evilness that if you hit the link it leads you into all sorts of trouble. Worst yet, it came from the sock summit email, which means we were hacked. So quick, we send out a bulk email warning knitters of this and then contact techies and Paypal and answer emails and… .

Luckily we caught it immediately and had an email out in the first 10 minutes and the site shut down within the hour.  No financial info was gotten, because none was there to get, just emails.  This craziness is one of the reason we do not keep financial information.

And here Tuesday was acting all innocent and helpful and even sunny and warm.

So we work on that issue and then we come to find that our supplier does not have as much BFL Fingering as thought.  YIKES!!! We are having a knit a long with that yarn. (That sound you hear is me breathing into a bag.) Of course we checked on supplies before we even started Interval (because who starts a knit along not knowing?) but alas, now there is not the yarn we thought we had at the mill. They are working on getting more made and we hope to have an ETA on it by the end of this week.

In the meantime, in a roll with the punches and work with what you have kind of attitude, I am looking at some of our other yarns as substitutes (STR lightweight comes to mind, as it almost always does) and another BFL Fingering that is Superwash that we might be able to bring in for a short run for the interim.  We can fill the orders we have. It’s just we can’t take any new ones right now.  We are as sad as you are aobut this change. Sorry!

I’ll let you know more tomorrow when I check in with Star.  I just wanted to get this up  for now so you knew the details.

Thanks!

Yarn

Isn’t that funny? I didn’t want to title a post with News, again or, Update.   Actually it’s more, Your yarn….to be exact.

Anyway I just wanted to give everyone who ordered at the sale (and since) an update on how we are progressing. We are almost caught up.

Phew!!  That was a mega ton of yarn to dye (I almost put a period there and then I heard Denise say, “hey…and let’s not forget rinse and hang and inspect and bundle and tag and package and ship”) .  All jobs we love I might add.  I spent part of this weekend rinsing and hanging to dry which is so much fun. You get to see the magic as  you pull it from the spinning cycle. Seriously cool.

All of the ALL Website sale orders will leave here by tomorrow. If you ordered during that time and do not see that your order has shipped that means that we weren’t happy with it for one reason or another and sent it back to the dyers. The rest will be coming through this week and we hope to have most of it shipped by Thursday.

We really appreciate your patience during these sales. I know it’s hard to wait for one’s yarn.

If you need color help for the Mystery Knit-along don’t be shy it really is great fun to help pick colors and I have them all here at my fingertips. Well… most of them anyway. I’m so excited. I think later today I’ll go out and do some more hue paring and post them here tomorrow.

I’m going to leave you with a question.

I have been wanting to do a spinning club for awhile now and am working on making that happen soonish. As I plan and gather I’d like to know what you’d like to see from a Blue Moon Spinning Club.

Ok back to the barn with me and again thank you so much for your support and patience.

A Mystery and a Race

mkalhues

StrawberryFields-BigBrainBlue

Let’s start with the Mystery shall we. Since the first one was so fabulous, Star Athena and I have dreamed up another Mystery KAL.

Welcome to INTERVAL  that link (yes that one there on the left) gives you everything you need to know to sign up. Once you do that then you’ll have the discount code you need to purchase your BFL Fingering BFL Fingering Superwash (BFL Fingering is out, so the BFL Fingering Superwash is a substitute) from the Blue Moon website . If you happen to be in a city that has one of our stockists (otherwise know as a yarn store) then please, by all means, check in with them to see what they have on hand.

NOTE: We are not substituting the Superwash BFL on orders that already exist. If you ordered the regular BFL Fingering yarn that is what you are getting.

I have picked a few color combinations, took some pictures, had some silly fun with name play and am posting them here. If you do not see anything that strikes your fancy please do comment here or email info@bluemoonfiberarts.com for help. I love this part of the job!!

Before we move onto our hue viewing let’s talk about our race.

This year Blue Moon is one of the sponsors for the Tour-de-Sock which we are pretty excited about since, it’s about socks and, well… you know how we feel about socks. What’s I think is really cool about Tour-de-Sock is that it really is a challenge. You can take my word for, it I’ve seen things. So, if you want to challenge your sock knitting self, have some crazy fun (There are teams with cool names, good natured heckling and prizes!) and… if that weren’t enough, raising money for Doctor’s without Borders in the process.  A win for all!

As promised hue duos for Interval Mystery KAL:  I couldn’t resist the name thing here. I apologize it was just to much fun to pass up. I was sorely tempted to put them together just for the name amusement aspect itself but then I got a hold of myself and moved on. Another time maybe.

Believe it or not ( my kids do not) I am off tomorrow to go judge a marmalade contest. I know. I’ve developed a thing. My latest batch was smoked pink grapefruit soaked in Jasmine green tea overnight then cooked down, sweetened a bit and topped of with a shot of Southern Comfort. It’s quite wonderful. My son has take to calling me the Marmalady. I haven’t yet decided how I feel about that.  I’m telling you all of this, so you understand if I do not respond to your color inquiries right away. I promise to check in a few times over the weekend.
Ok off to pack. I have yet to pack a thing.  Plenty of time… Right?

this and that

I know I’m color obsessed. I get it and for the most part I feel that I’ve made it work for me. As with any art there are highs and lows, times where the color well is a little dry and times when it is overflowing. I’m in one of the overflowing places right now. I have to tell you, I’m so overpowered with the hue captivation that I truly feel like I could eat breathe and sleep it. I’d like to lock myself up in the dye barn for a few days and just dye.. dye…  and maybe dye some more.   I’m really into layered solids with lots of depth and character.

My garden is proving to be quite a fertile source of inspiration. peonySee this tree peony? Look at the blue grey with it’s bit of yellow center. That burgundy is lovely too and certainly offsets those silver polleny stamens but I am absolutely entranced by those hues in the center all by themselves.  This peony and I have a date in the dye barn tomorrow morning.

I have quite a few visitors lately which is great fun. I was talking with a friend about how I always wanted to run a yarny B&B and my daughter chuckled and told me that I was already. She’s a funny one!

Anyway it’s always fun to share and play with others in the dye studio. Yesterday Amy and I made Lobelia Blue and came up with some seriously cool blue colorways.  I think we’re going to run a naming game for these. I’ll keep you posted.

Star Athena and I loved our Mystery KAL so much that we are going to do another. We have it scheduled for the middle of June and Star is going to use my current favorite yarn, our new BFL Fingering.

Here are the colors we chose:mkalhues Stawberry Fields Forever and Big Brain Blue You will need one skein of each color. Of course you can choose your own colors and I will post of list of my pics in a few days. As with the Sartorial KAL there will be a discount for the yarn.
I’m super excited about this KAL. Star has come up with some really interesting construction which would be cool in one color but in two? Be still my heart!

I leave you with for today a picture of my very dear friend Hazel with her new buddy ( one of our new brood) Jillie Bean. Hazel and I share a love of our fine feathered friends.

Peep Peep!!

The writing on the wall…

You know those days, where you wake up all chipper and bright, with a positive ready to conquer the day attitude, and… a plan, a to do list even and your favorite cuppa, just ready to rock the day!  Then… mere seconds before you pick up your to do list, Kaboom!! The day explodes and keeps going at a record pace with no concern at all for your plan or your to do list, and that cuppa tea you made, well that has been sitting cold for at least a few hours with the barest sip taken from it.        I am having one of those days.  It started around 6:30 and has not let up. I’ve reheated my tea not once, or twice even, but three times. This third time, my tea, me and my laptop have stolen away behind a locked door so I can write this post and work on at least the first item of my to do list which is deadline oriented so really needs to be done today!! Hear that powers that be?  Deadline.

Okay, now that I have that out we can get down to important stuff, like yarn and color. I am sure by now that most of you have seen that we’re having one of our semi-annual 15% off sales on the website. It stared yesterday and goes until Wednesday at midnight eastern time and 9:00 pacific. The coupon code you need to redeem your 15% off is MAYSALE2013.  If you’ve been waiting on getting yarn for a summer lace project of fiber for the Tour de Fleece this is a good time. The dye barn is already hopping with orders flying in and us processing them. We do get quite a few orders during a sale so it will takes us longer to process them. We appreciate your patience!!  If you need any color or ordering help please do let us know. We are more than happy to serve!

Speaking of color help. I could use some of yours. I am planning another color affection. I finally finished the silkie one I was working on and then promptly gave it to a friend who was lusting after it.

This has been sitting on the lunch table in the barn and has been making me a crazy woman. I love them all in their own right, especially that scummy one on the end, but together I think they are magic. I don’t need ( or want to work with) 5 colors so I have to pick three.

y5

And herein lies my problem.

y2

There’s this trio which makes me pretty stinkin’ happy. ( It’s not the best picture but you get the idea.)

y1

And then there’s this combo that seriously makes my heart go pitter pat, pat, pat!

y3

And take away that Blecker grey and substitute the hue of my heart Pond Scum and it’s pretty wonderful too.

But you know what?

Sigh.

I think I might need a moment. Oh my, this is hard enough just to consider much less type or say out loud. I think…  that… maybe, just maybe… I might sorta, kinda like the Blecker trio better than the Pond Scum one. I can’t decide. I really do like them both a lot. ( Sorry Gourdy combo.) The choice is definitely between those two.

So Help Please!  What are your color thoughts one this. Besides… doing both. Believe me I have thought of this option.

Since we’re on the subject of pond scum ( The things one finds oneself typing.) I found another knitter who has a love as deep as mine for the scum that is pond scum green. sw1

I didn’t think it was possible but Stephen might even have more of a color crush on pond scum right now than I do. Actually it was quite wonderful to watch someone else obsess over a hue as much as I do.

Hue Obsession. Hmmm… now, that has a nice ring to it.

We  got  to spend all day playing with color on yarn with dye. Way too much fun.  We  even came up with some new colors. sw2

sw3

Stephen also has a bit of chicken whisperer in him.

So… a good weekend full of color. My favorite kind!   And look at that, cup of tea finished and we have chatted and now onto my deadline project.

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Weekend Fiber Fun

May is one of my favorite months! Spring has usually made herself known in a lilacs are blooming,  birds are singing and sun is shining by now. Since we’re just at the beginning that means it’s time for The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. Another reason to love May!!

This year is special because MS&W is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary of serving our fiber community with this festival.  40 years,  that’s along time. I was wondering earlier this week what it would have been like to be at the very first one in 1973 when it was the Carroll County Craft Festival.

As we do every year we’ve sent a mega-ton of yarn with Toni Neil of The Fold .  A whole slew of new colorways ( including the new shaded solids)  and… some  good ol’ color friends, that even I, was hard pressed to remember.  All three of our new yarns are making their debut, the Targhee sisters, worsted and bulky, Victoria, queen of Polwarth and the soft and just flippin’ wonderful BFL Fingering. Toni also has our current trunk show, including but certainly not limited to Karen Alfke’s Ariadne

You’ll also see and carress and try on… :

Sartorial Cowl by Star Athena  in DeVine
Axis Mitts by Sam Roshak  in Twisted
Colour Affection by Veera Valmaki in both Seduction and Silkie Socks that Rock
Pretty Thing Cowl by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee  in our Worthy Fingering

I hope everyone has a great sheepy time!

Toni’s in Barn 3, Booth 18 right across from the food booths!

Things to look forward to for those of us who  can’t get to Maryland this weekend.

Twisted is hosting Amy Singer next weekend for a few very cool classes and a talk Saturday evening that is sure to be a good time. I know I’m going.  If you have not had a chance to meet or hear Amy’s knitty story this is your chance.

You know what’s right around the corner? Next week actually. Another thing to love about May, Mother’s Day!  When I was thinking what I wanted to do this year to pay homage to all that Mother energy, I remembered this gift I made for a dear friend. I took our silk hankies and wrote a wish on it for her ( in dye of course) then, decorated it with a wee bit of color here and there. I then knit it up into a lovely little shawlette.  Since she could not see what the wish was I wrote a little card and put it in the package and mailed it off.  She loved it so much and I loved making it for her just as much. A sentiment dyed and knit into silk.  Pretty sweet.  So sweet that I thought it would be a great Mother’s Day project/present.

So…

Hankynewsletter

I painted a bunch of hankies!!

I decorated the edge with lovely May type hues and wrote MOM in the middle. This is what it looks like before we set the dye. It runs into itself a bit as it steams, which makes the message a hard to read, but gives a great effect for the knitting part and finished object. We’re calling these our Mother’s Day Message in a Hanky and we do have a limited number of them available. It is way harder to write on a silk hanky with dye then one would think. Seriously!  I can’t tell how thrilled Debra was that this little bit of creativity was my job. I love it.  What’s not to love about knitting a message to someone you love that they can wear and have forever – a treasure!

A little knit tip: When knitting these pull from the top and then the bottom of the hanky pile to evenly disperse the color range.

An ordering note:  If you order this by itself it will ship on Monday May 6th. If you add another something else to your order we can’t guarantee Monday shipment.

I hope, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing this weekend, that you have a wonderful one. It’s been seriously beautiful here in the Pacific Northwest so it’s gardening for me! Putting in an asparagus barrel, some new dye plant beds and a dye play date.
