luxurious knits for #selfknitcare December Special!

Tina has not one, but TWO special yarns to tempt us with this second week of December #selfknitcare special! (coupon code at bottom of post!) A little Super soft DK love!

IMG_3461

Crackpaca just oozes luxury from every little pearl-like twist of its firm little double plies. With 45% baby alpaca for drape and softness, 40% Merino for superfine wooly wonderfulness, and 10% cultivated silk for a little glisten and gleam, it’s a tasty little morsel of a yarn.

P1010523_small2

We promptly knit it up in Churchmouse’s free pattern, Vineyard Cowl, because all that sumptuous softness deserved to be right up against our necks! This little piece makes the most of a single (generous) skein, taking just 200+ yards. Heck – if you have friends with birthdays in January, or you’re getting together after the holidays for a delayed gift exchange, this pattern should be top of your list. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t enjoy snuggling up in this beauty come January!

The thing I really appreciate about how Tina designed Crackpaca is its total non-hairiness! Many alpaca yarns have some fibers that sproink out and poke you just a little bit; or they can look a little … shaggy. Not so Crackpaca! There’s something in the tightness of the ply, plus the addition of merino for softness and silk for sheen that makes Crackpaca read less … alpaca-y. (You know what I mean, right?)

So imagine my delight when one of my design crushes, Amy Cristoffers, released a new pullover pattern designed for alpaca-blend yarns: the Ryder Pullover.

IMG_7092_small2Here’s an easy, sumptuous funnel-neck sweater that you’d just want to cozy up in on a weekend and never leave. It’s got modern, deep ribbing at the cuffs and a high-yet-wide neckline that lets you snuggle into Crackpaca’s soft folds. Sizes range from 36″–55″, which would call for 4–7 skeins. I might plan to knit mine a bit oversized, just to be able to wear it over anything (especially pyjama pants!). And that rusty colorway in her original sweater has me dreaming of one in “Bitter Sweet.” Don’tcha think? bittersweet_sk

Or maybe big-and-boxy is your thing this Winter (all the better to hide the transgressions of the holidays!). I’m intrigued by “Smackover” by Samantha Stadter — looks like one to pop on and hide in until Spring comes around. Knit it up in a nice neutral like “Greige,” and you’ll be wearing it with everything!
fullsizeoutput_15a8_small2 Check out the other photos on Ravelry – there’s a cool center-front line of decreases that adds a spark of interest and makes for a neat ‘hang’ that takes it beyond the oversized, plain boxy-sweater look.

The cool thing about pairing these two yarns – Crackpaca and La Luna DK – this week is that the pattern choices are pretty interchangeable! I was looking for patterns that don’t knit this gauge too ‘open,’ because the silk component in these yarns might make for sloppy, unreliable fabric if knitted too loosely. But in a range of 23-20 sts/4″, a garment you make out of either of these luxurious lovelies should hold their shape through years of wear.

I love the way La Luna‘s luster shows off depth of color! So let’s look at a few colorful projects that will let you blend and play with some of Tina’s rich colorways.

pb-13e739530f9ae855f87b33effc0bc8029efa31bf_myl-beat-var1-l_l_720x600First up is a bit of colorwork joy: Beat Sweater by Katrin Schneider. I love the geometric motifs across the shoulders and hips – what a fun way to combine two of your favorite colorways! Choose two Shaded Solids that really stand out from one another to maintain the visual impact of the simple lines in this one.

1-136Or go crazy with some Multicolor Waves and fade from one to the other in the Comfort Fade Cardi by none other than the Queen of Fade herself, Andrea Mowry. You get the fun of choosing four colors that relate to one another to create the ‘fading’ effect – I’m toying with going rich and bright with “Cables of Wrath“, “Black to the Fuchsia”, “#shepersisted”, and “Survivor”! (Go big or go home, right?)

But let’s say you had your heart set on a big, lustrous wrap out of La Luna (and why wouldn’t you, really?). Tina and I were both stopped in our tracks this weekend by the prospect of this bit of loveliness to swathe ourselves in:

P1010337_medium2

Egad, that lace! That texture! That shape! It’s Kempen by Katrin Schneider, and it is a glorious thing. Four skeins of La Luna will get you there – and it’s hard deciding whether you’d have more fun knitting it or wearing it!

Order your skeins of Crackpaca or La Luna DK this week with Tina’s generous code, and you’ll be casting on dreamily with pillows of lustrous loveliness in a few weeks, after the hustle and bustle is over. Enjoy!

Code is: selfknitcareDK  and is good for 15% now until  midnight December 15th!

Happy Knitting!!

have your CAKE and knit it too!

Fruitcake, Yorkshire Christmas Cake … it just seems appropriate to be thinking about cake during December, no?

Well, this knitter has CAKE (Worsted) on her mind, for all sorts of good reasons! So many of us are loving on the softness of Merino right now – she’s the Queen of Wool for many good reasons, right? Tina’s sourced some supremely fine, squishy and scrumptious Merino for the CAKE range of yarns at Blue Moon. (Mmm… sponge cake!)

No, but seriously: once the crunch of holiday gift-knitting frenzy is behind us, wouldn’t it be nice to sit down on the couch and curl up with a generous serving of 560 yards of 100% Merino? … all you’d need is a little whipped cream on the side. (And a 15% off coupon code for your order! Scroll down so you can cut-and-paste that into your next Blue Moon order.)

So while you’re wrapping up and shipping the generous gifts of your labors this holiday season, let yourself dream a little about what you’d like to cast on in January for some ‘selfish’ knitting time. I’ll get your imagination going, shall I?

56538002237__2E871293-4A6F-409F-93AC-EC0C26A4CE08Rosicrucian Scarf by Jocelyn Tunney poured off my needles recently – and I can’t wait to bundle up in it! Honestly, some of the most fun you can have as a knitter is putting together three colors to make a project. (Remember the Color Affection craze?)

Tina’s been having fun with a few of you already, helping you put glorious colors together for this beauty. Check out Jocelyn’s original set of colors: mustard and teal and deep navy, oh my! We both chose to do our beginning triangles in the darkest color of the three, then aimed for a ‘pop’ stripe before heading into the MC.53F-3_small2

Check out my project notes on Ravelry about how I made the most of that skein of Everyday Grey for the MC – I couldn’t do the full set of garter ridges called for in the pattern without a second skein of the MC, so I did a bit of weighing and figgerin’. (If you’d like some help with your own when the time comes, send me a message on Ravelry if my notes aren’t making sense to ya.)

Cool thing about this project is that it leaves you room for more! There’s plenty of yardage left over of your first and second colors (Deep Unrelenting Grey and Snowflake from mine) to do some more fun accessories! I’m plotting a Turn a Square hat to go with mine, and who knows? I’ll probably have enough left over to crank out an 1898 Hat as well.

But wait! My hands always get cold on morning walks; maybe I want to make sure I have enough CAKE to make a pair of Colourblock Mittens to round out my all-grey ensemble. (Yup. Definitely do.)

DSCN2227_small2

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

But let’s say your ambitions for Selfish Knitting Season are broader … more epic in scope! You’re thinking SWEATER. Something meaty to really stick your needles into and hunker down for a few weeks. Personally, I can’t think of a more enjoyable way to spend the long evenings of January and February than a sweater’s-worth of knitting with CAKE Worsted. (Except perhaps the glorious joy of swanning around Madrona Fiber Arts or Stitches West in February wearing said sweater!)

IMG_6285_medium2What about “Ease” by Alicia Plummer to whet your appetite for winter knitting? The glorious fine softness of Merino deserves to be cushioned right up around your neck in the cowl-neck version, and the plump stitch definition will show off the wide bands of ribbing beautifully. Or, if you live in warmer climates, there’s a beautiful ballet-neck option as well!

Timber1_small2Or let’s say you’re dreaming of snuggling into a cardigan. Shannon Cook’s “Timber” has all the hallmarks of a true classic: clean lines combined with interesting details (plus it looks fantastic with a pair of boots!).

Some of us really want to relax into some gorgeous textured stitches to cleanse our palates, in which case you deserve to treat yourself to “Keera” by Isabell Kraemer. That beautiful lace detail running down the back will keep you engaged and entertained all through the long evenings of winter, and warm after that! detail3keera_2_medium2

Your appetite for CAKE now having been thoroughly whetted, here’s your coupon code so you can order it up and have it at the ready for a post-holiday selfish cast-on party!

for 15% off CAKE Worsted, use code selfknitcare
(good until December 7th, so don’t dither over colors too long!)

Updates and Happenings!

Happy December 1st!

How is it already December 1st?!

okay so I have been quiet because we are so very busy dyeing all the things so everyone has what they need in the time-frame needed. If you have concerns please do email me. I am answering emails in the evenings. I am chained to the dye pots during the day at the moment. Luckily I am a huge fan of dye pots!

If you are part of our Out of the Hue Color club and School of Yarn please look for emails this weekend. Yarn we have been waiting on has shown up so we are scrambling to get all the things out. As I have mentioned thank you so very much for your patience and understanding.

As we kit up these moon kits I realize how much I love them all!! We are going to keep them up for sale for a bit longer. So if you want one you still have time. We will not be able to get them to you in time for the MKAL cast-on on December 7th so please keep that in mind. I am so looking forward to seeing how these all knit up in Larissa’s design.

Rosicrucian Scarf by Jocelyn Tunney in CAKE Worsted in colorways Deep Unrelenting Grey, Everyday Grey and Snowflake!

Before we know it we will be in January and selfish knitting month. I like to think of it as self care knitting! Saying it’s selfish makes it seems like it’s not a positive and it most surely is. Anyway from what I see a lot of us are going to be knitting sweaters. Yay!! we are knitting sweaters! There are so many stunning sweater patterns out there right now that’s it’s a bit hard to choose one.

Every week in December starting today, December 1st we are going to feature one of our garment yarns and put is on Special for that week. We will post here on the blog details about each yarn and then have pattern recommendations based each yarn. I know!! How fun right? Our first yarn is super yummy CAKE Worsted. (Yes I made sure is was in stock!) Look at the stitch definition!! So round and wonderful and then add in so very very lofty! Oh my

Special is 15% off until December 7th! Code is: selfknitcare

Check back here this week for so much more on our CAKE friend!

Giving Tuesday

Thanksgiving Thursday and Giving Tuesday. Wondering if the days of the week beginning with T are the ones that have to do with generosity of spirit.

There are so many ways to give. One can give with time, attentions, money, kindness, appreciation, honesty… and the list goes on.

I think everyday is a chance to be grateful and to give and in my experience it uplift both the giver and the receiver. I love giving! Actually I would rather give than receive. Going through cancer treatment taught me a whole lot about the gift of receiving. One I am still working on.

Today we are donating a portion of all sales to our local food bank.

Our 15% off all yarns end at midnight tonight. Our gift to our knitters and you gift to us too!

Coupon code is:givingthanks18

Have a wonderful weekend!

Goggle gobble!

’tis the Season

IMG_0643

’tis the Season for making and giving and… for a little Single Silk Targhee.
Single Silk Targhee is one of my favorite of our yarns. I know…I say that about all of my yarns. Truly, this one holds a very special place in my heart because it is Targhee, and as most of you know I have a “thing” for Targhee wool. Also it has silk, which gives it some crazy amount of sheen and also takes the dye differently from the Targhee so the colors have all kinds of depth! Wickedly cool!

Also, with each skein weighing in at 9.5 ounces and 696 yards one can get all kinds of accessories out of one skein which is pretty grand! Plus, since it’s a light worsted and not a fingering-weight yarn, our knit time flies a wee bit faster. Maybe I should call this our last-minute, one-skein wonder!

Anyway we are offering a 10% discount on it for the weekend. Starting now and going until Monday at midnight pacific time.  The discount code is: SST18

The picture about is our Loophole Cowl knit with Single Silk Targhee in our Heckley Speckley colorway!! A fast and super cozy knit!

HATS! HATS!! HATS!!!

IMG_3296 (1)

Another quick gift knit are hats!! They are a fun knit and we can usually find something in our stash to use as we did here. The pattern is Rikke by Sarah Young, a very popular (free!) one from 2011.

I love the simplicity of this hat and how it looks good on pretty much everyone, even me! And… if you do not have DK-weight available, you can combine 2 yarns as we did, knit  together for some crazy-cool color play and a little texture!! We have put together 2 skeins of our Sock that Rock Lightweight to get gauge and combine two colorways that I found in our leftover mill end bin!! One is Heckley Speckley and I think the other is Sweet Dreams. Look at the magic these two colors are making knit together; and since you using 2 skeins you can get 2 hats out of this!!! So great.

We all have colorways in our stash that maybe do not speak to us as loudly as they did when we purchased them or don’t  know what to do with anymore. Combining those with other colorways is a great way to change us the color game without over-dyeing or de-stashing! Also, it’s a great way to balance color: toning down a bright color or brightening up one that needs a little spark. One could also use 2 different fingering-weight bases for a hat for a little pizzazz: one skein with some sparkle in it or one with a little texture…. So very many possibilities to keep our heads warm and pretty!

CABIN ROSE COWL by Meaghan Schmaltz

Meaghan has designed such a lovely cowl in our Plushy in the colorway Figgy Pudding. I am intrigued by this pattern and how it will knit in other colorways like maybe Equinoxed or Dark Side of Blue Moon or… .

MidWinter Moon MKAL

MIDWINTER ICONS copy

Welcome to our MidWinter Moon Mystery Knit-a-long with the creative and talented Larissa Brown
What a lunar year we’ve had; one filled with all kinds of lunar magic, beginning with a Super Total Lunar Eclipsed Blue Moon as the second Blue Moon of the year… and we hadn’t even left January! We are closing out the year with an equally magical celestial event: our last full moon of the year will happen on the Winter Solstice! So while our days are darkening into the longest night of the year, our moon is waxing full and shedding a little light into that darkness!
This wrap – delivered in four weekly clues – will reflect and celebrate the exchange of dark and light. Clue #1 drops December 7th, in time for you to knit exactly half your wrap by the Winter Solstice. Colors and patterns will span from dark night sky or winter sea to pale moon, expressing the meaning of deep winter for each of us and the promise of coming spring. A Solstice color between the two gives light to the darkness, like luminaria lighting a night path, candles in midwinter, the Northern Lights, or sunrise as the days gradually lengthen.
The form will be mysterious, a joy to knit, and beautiful to wear, at a size that fits in with holiday crafting – not a shawlette, but not as big as a “shlanket.” Expect a doable amount of knitting per week, and a skill level suitable for a beginner-with-a-friend, or beginner-with-help from your lovely LYS.
I love the idea of knitting the light into the darkness stitch by stitch. What an uplifting and beautiful way to celebrate the this Winter Solstice’s Full Moon and shine a little light out into the world!
We’ve come up with kits based on Larissa’s design and the moons of the year. Most cultures have names for the full moons in each month, so we’ve themed out kits based on some of those moons and the colors they inspired.
Each kit includes a trio of Sock that Rock Lightweight skeins in a light (or bright)-to-dark color sequence so we can gradually work our way back to the light. A coupon code for 10% off is good from now until November 14th. We have a short window of time to get you your kits for cast-on on December 7th, so the sooner you order the better! If you order after the 15th, we will still do our very best to get it to you on time but we can’t guarantee it. We have also come up with a few kits that are exclusive to Twisted, so be sure to check those out too!
I am so over my lunar-obsessed self about this MKAL. I have found a kindred moon spirit in Larissa and it has just been all kinds of fun dreaming this all up with her and Emily at Twisted.
I hope you’ll join us as we knit a little light into the world!

Magical Houses

Look what I did!!  I am pretty tickled with these. As those of you who are in the sock club already know this has been the year of magic!  One really cannot celebrate magic without paying homage to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy and all of the wonderful and not so great characters and their battle between good and evil. Honestly I was torn as to which way to go but then I thought about the houses and their colors and what they stood for and  it just hit home (pun intended) for me.

The only drawback was the colors to the club are usually exclusive. So I checked with a whole bunch of the club members and they were of the mind that the fun and houses were more important to them than the exclusivity. So here they are for us all to enjoy!!

Which house are you?? I am Ravensclu but I have to say I seriously LOVE how the Hufflepurls color cam out. I think I am on a yellow kick lately.

I so want house socks!! I feel like someone (hint hint) needs to come up with a house sock pattern. What do you think? I love the idea!! Anyone game? Cristi???

Weekend Special And we are running a 9% off code this weekend to celebrate reaching our 9000 instagram follower reached on Friday!!! If you do not follow us please do. I post so very many color and yarn pics there you don’t want to miss those. Oh and chickens and kitties too.

Next weekend I will be at Coastal Yarns celebrating the Stormy Weather Arts Festival. Do come by and see us. I made a very special Stormy Weather colorway! We will have yarn tasting and trunk show and there will be prizes and we will be casting on a beautiful wavey cowl.

I am seriously possessed by color. I think about it all the time. Last year when we were dyeing massive amounts of shaded solids on our Cake DK base for Carol Feller’s Camira KAL I had a color idea. What sparked this idea was the amount of grey we were dyeing. So many knitters order grey!! And fair enough, its a great neutral and looks pretty great on most of us. I wear tons of grey with a little black thrown in for good measure. hehehe!

We have quite a few greys also, from our dark Deep Unrelenting Grey to our very, very pale Winter Solstice. I got to thinking how nice it would be to have greys that had just a hint ( tint ) of another color to them. Wouldn’t that just make the most stunning garment. The color would be mostly grey but with swirls of “other” color through the grey. Just enough color to be visible but not enough to take over where you could not see the grey. One of those fine color lines!

It’s taken almost a full year to make to where I was happy with that fine line! And I am. Also pretty excited to add to our coven! So why The Coven and wild witchy women? Well… first of all, I have a thing for magic and witches. My grandmother was the witchiest woman I knew so I can dedicating these to my Winnie. And yes, there will be a Winnie in our Coven I have just not settled on her tint yet. She would so love that I had not settled on her tint. I can hear her now…cackling away at the idea of making her a color. She had the best cackle ever! I think it was a combo of the Maxwell House all day long with a little Jack Daniels thrown in after 3 and the non filter Camel cigarettes. Boy do I miss her. Maybe a coffee colored tint. Hmm… .

Anyway…I see our Coven being good for just about any knitting whatsoever. Where I really see casting there subtle spells is in garments, especially. So many sweater patterns out there that these would be so beautiful. It’s almost like a, “you can have your cake and eat it too” moment. Since you can have your grey but with a little color peaking through. I’m pretty tickled with these. I hope you love them!

If you have any witch names or ideas I would love to hear them!

Hocus Pocus!! It is the 25th Anniversary of the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus so of course we had to celebrate that with a witchy tribute those wacky Sanderson sisters!!

Okay my lovelies I have to go pack and ship Moon Shadow Anniversary packages! Package up Our of the Hue and edit the last part and dye and clean the chicken coop and maybe the house a bit. Valla my very long haired Norwegian Forest cat is shedding and there are big clumps of cat hair everywhere!!!

I know I should not say this out loud because it will most probably jinx it but next week we are going to be caught up in a way that will let me sleep at night!!! Again thank you so much for your patience!! I have a lot to say about our industry changes that are happening and coming our way so stay tuned for that! What I can advise is that now is not the time for stash busting. It is the time for stash enhancing!

Oh I almost forgot! How could I forget! I met the new neighbors last night. I was driving down the drive and they had a fire going and were roasting hotdogs and marshmallows. I know. The have 2 adorable and friendly pooches and…( wait for it) she is a KNITTER!!! Yes!  Happy dancing!

They want fiber animals and we had a great chat and I am so very, very, very thankful!

Thank you for all the good vibes you sent my way!

Happy YARN Day!!

Seriously… like love it!

***********************

Like pretty much everything about it…

I love designing yarns. I love spinning yarn. I love testing each new lot of yarn for consistency. I love reeling yarn. I love winding it into little balls or big cakes. I really love making yarn colorful by dyeing it.  I love all the weights and measure of yarn. I love getting to know all about a yarns story and what it wants to be. I love matching yarn to project. I love swatching! I really do love swatching to make sure I havethe right yarn and gauge for my project. I love that there is a worsted weight yarn and a worsted spun one. I love that a lot of yarn is twisted, a bit like me! I love the diversity of what we can use to create yarn. I really love wool yarn from all those lovely sheepies! I love the feel of yarn when I am making and wearing it. I  love really love the smell of it. I love the people I work with in the yarn industry. I love the mechanics of the yarn industry and it’s history. I love all the fiber artists I get to work with who also love yarn! I love that working with yarn and creating beauty is good for our brains, hearts and souls. I love that yarn brings us together ~ a stunning tapestry of  a community ~ loop by loop!!

All for which is really great to remember today on YARN Day and also, at a time when our industry and world is experiencing some trying times.

Today we are going to celebrate the love and yes, power of YARN!

We are going to start with some fun!!

Insta-Game ~ (Facebook)  with prizes!

I am going to post my little “what I love about yarn” paragraph to Instagram and would love for you to comment as to what you love about yarn!! I will randomly pick 10 of you who comment there with your “share yarn love” and send each a skein of Socks that Rock. Oh I will also post this to facebook so if you comment there it also counts toward being eligible for a prize.

We are also offering a YARN LOVE Discount

Starting right now (Saturday, October 13th) we are offering a 13% discount on All YARNS good until midnight Sunday (Pacific Time). Use the code: YARNLOVEDAY18 when you check out to get your discount!

I also would love to see what you are knitting with your Blue Moon yarns. If you could post a photo to instagram with the hastags #bluemoonfiberarts  and #yarnday so we all can see your creations that would be so wonderful. I can’t tell you how much it brightens our day when you share what you have made with us. After all you are why we do what we do. Otherwise we are just making and coloring yarn to hang in the barn and that is kinda silly!

What is next weekend??

Out of the Hue will also ship next week!

As I have said quite a bit during the past few months I am very grateful for you understanding and patience. I am doing my very best juggling dealing with all of the yarn stuff and communicating with you about where we are. We are a very small company and a little smaller than normal right now. So if you have not heard back from em right away it is not because I do not value you. It is seriously just juggling all the yarn balls and making it all work. I personally truly value each and every one of you. I love being a dyer but I also equally love serving you!!

Okay I am sure there is more but I need to go do some shipping!!

Have a lovey weekend!!
