Christmas colors at Blue Moon

The sun (yay!!) is peaking through the trees this morning which it has not done here in about a week so I am feeling the Friday love this morning!!

We have done our colorway change and put up a whole bunch of our holiday colorways. I really love this aspect of a colorway change. Making new colorways is all kinds of fun but I also really enjoy revisiting older ones or ones we offer only once a year which is the case with holiday ones.

A little Rudolph’s Revenge!

…and one of my favorites Ginger’s Gnome Home!

If there is a holiday colorway you would like to see return that is not on the website right now please do let us know!!

I can not wait to dye a some of these up in our new yarn bases like Crackpaca and Super Sparkle. Oh…and Single Silk Targhee!!

Christmas cowls!!! If I had the time I would so knit all of my loved ones a cowl in either our Single Silk Targhee or Crackpaca.

Our KALS start really soon and we have been busting out the Single Silk Targhee and Spell Shawl Kits. We have shipped out the bulk of these orders and working on the rest which will ship out today and on Monday!

I have thinking it would be fun to play a few games/contests and I have really been wanting to do an instagram contest.
We were thinking it might fun for us to post a picture a week of an older colorway and have you guys guess what it is.

The first person to guess and respond on our instagram feed where the picture is, gets a skein of that colorway in Socks that Rock Lightweight!

Please use the following hashtags: #bluemoonfiberarts #whatsthatcolorway

We will start this contest on Monday. I will post the first picture then. Our instagram feed is

Okay I have such a seriously full day today I do not know How I am going to squeeze it in.

I am working on new holiday colorways. So if there is something you’d like s to see us do. Write a description in the comments section of this post please and I will do mt very best!

Have the loveliest of weekends my friends!

Autumn KALS are here!!!!!!!

I so look forward to our Autumn KALS especially since we started working with the ever so creative, queen of the short row, Carol Feller! As I am sure I have said before I pretty much love just about everything that comes off Carol’s needles and am thrilled that she loves to work with my yarn!

As soon as I held our Single Silk Targhee in my hands, when it waltzed in the dye barn door last fall, I knew I wanted to send it to Carol to see what kind of sweater goodness she would dream up.

It’s a dream alright! Luwan  is a super textured pull-over with some really graceful sloping lines ( thank you short rows) that is going to be such a wonderful everyday kind of sweater!  Our Single Silk Targhee adds the extra cozy factor to Luwan. I know some of us are a little wary of knitting garments out of singles because of the pilling aspect. Well, my knitterly friends that is why we made this one out of Targhee which is soft but not too fine and silk. Targhee is a bit more durable that an fine merino and with the added silk you have a match made in fiber heaven. When we wash and dye it we full it a bit to add even more durability for and softness for wearing. You want this next to your skin!!! Because the Targhee has a bit more crimp and elasticity to it also makes Single Silk Targhee a single among singles!

Carol was a little concerned about the singleness of our yarn so she gave her swatch to her boys to abuse and it passed their tests with flying colors!!

I hope you will join us in what s sure to be a fun knit and a lovely wear! Because of all the texture Luwan will look good in just about any colorway we have even BeSpeckled ones! Please, oh please, someone knit a Heckley Speckley one.

When you purchase the pattern from Carol she has a discount code that is good for 10% off Single Silk Targhee and Targhee Worsted.

Since they are the same gauge we have added Targhee Worsted to the discount and knit option for this sweater for those of you that feel the need for a plied yarn.

img_7470-682x1024

All that texture! So yummy!! Carol knit her Luwan in our Deep Unrelenting Grey!  What are you going to knit yours out of??

That is a whole lot of KAL joy but it is not all we have!

My buddy Shannon and I have been brewing up a little color spell for you knit pleasure in honer of Autumn, All Hallows Eve and our super sassy witchy selves!

Here’s a very small peek at Shannon’s Spell Shawl and the pile of kits I am putting together for it! You are so going to love this one! Also a whole lot of texture and using our lovely Featherlight! Another super wonderful single!  I sense a theme!!!

The Fall Twist Collective went live this week!!  Have you seen it? If you have not had a chance do yourself a favor and grab a refreshing beverage and sit down for a long perusal. We are lucky enough to have this classy and colorful hat and cowl set (Echinacea) designed  by none other than the ever so clever and talented Kate Gilbert herself. I was pretty tickled when she told me she was designing with our Cloud 9.

Also make sure not to miss Carrick, a cabled wonder by designer Kristin Eksuzian. A stunning statement of a sweater. I have to admit to being a little obsessed with that big cable.

Farmer’s Market MKAL last clue is out and and look aren’t they pretty??

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I am so looking forward to seeing all of the color combo’s we came up as shawls instead of skeins!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I hope everyone posts their shawl pics to instagram.
So far my favorite is still the one with Apron Strings, Fruity Loopies and Spawn of Scum. which I am sure comes as no surprise to anyone. Thank you Shannon for such a fun MKAL!! You rock!

Such a light and graceful yarn. A fine two ply spun with luxurious Baby Alpaca and Cultivated Silk. I am not much of a lace knitter but this yarn makes me wish I was. I can just imagine how wonderful Lima Laci would not only look in a intricate lace pattern but also feel. 900 yds /4.25oz @ 29.00 We have a very limited amount so get it while you can!

Okay now for the queen of the yarn ball!! Meet my new yarn crush!!!

Crackpaca!!!

45% Baby Alpaca / 45% Super Duper Fine Merino / 10 % Cultivated Silk

Now, I am not the biggest alpaca fan on planet. Which up until now is why Blue Moon had only offered one Alpaca blend yarn, our Peru. I do love our Peru. I love it because it is a good blend which I firmly believe is the magic for a good alpaca yarn. Well, the same folks that created our Peru have come up with a yarn that I seriously wanted to just call Crack, it is that wonderful… so after much hemming and hawing and a little input on instagram I’ve settled on Crackpaca! Because this is most definitely crack for knitters luckily there are no harmful side effects and as far as I know it is legal!

It’s equal parts baby alpaca and a superfine merino and this is what I think makes it so wonderful. The superfine aspect of the merino enhances the baby alpaca by adding in elasticity and buoyancy without taking away that ultra softness that we love alpaca for.

If that were not enough, let’s just add in a little cultivated silk to the mix – just enough for a little sheen and strength. And…because we can, let’s ply it a little tighter than we normally do on this type of yarn and make it a 2 ply. Can you see in the picture how it looks like little alpaca pearls.

So soft and light and buoyant.

When it waltzed in the door, I wanted to take all of the skeins and make a bed with them and then climb in. I still might.

I am super excited about a whole bunch of the yarns we have added to our line up in the past year and Crackpaca is definitely at the very top of that list.
We have it priced at $27.00 for the next little bit as an introductory, “Oh my goodness, you have to have this yarn” special.

When ordering please keep in mind that alpaca takes dye a little light than most fibers! That said, all three of the fibers in this blend take the dye differently giving us a bit of a subtle heather effect throughout. I didn’t really notice it until I started knitting with it.

Sigh! After I finish this post I have to go out in the over 90 degree heat and dye ( hehe) and all I want to do is sit someplace air conditioned and knit my lovely crackpaca!!

One more thing I would like to touch on before I go is the Fall Sweater Challenge that the lovely folks at  The Buffalo Wool Co thought up. It’s basically a community knit-a-long involving designers, local yarns stores and yarn companies having some grand ol’ knit fun! There’s a few rules, points!!, prizes and discounts and all kinds of designs and in the end sweaters so really a big win!

We are one of the sponsors and quite honestly are still working out the details on our end. We are seeing which of our LYS’s wants to join in the fun and decided on designs and KALS and yarns and prizes.

So…stay tuned for sure. If you have any ideas of feedback for designs or yarns please let me know tina@bluemoonfiberarts.com. I will have more info next week so we can start our sweater adventure. You know what? It could be a Crackpaca sweater!!!!!!!!  Be still my heart.

Okay I am off to the barn to dye some speckley sparkley yarn!

Have a great weekend!

summer yarns, knits and color

I have spent a good part of the week really getting to know our new colorways.  I have been typing them up into the magic Blue Moon colorway recipe database. After they are all filed in their appropriate color category folders I print off a copy for each of the dyers and then, I teach them how to dye it. I also tag a sample of each one for our sample wall. I also photograph them for the website and anything else I feel is needed. It’s a lot so I know them real well when I am done. I have to tell you I am pretty thrilled with this last batch of hues. So much so that all I want to do is sit on the back deck with a refreshing beverage and knit each and everyone of them. I mean really I should cause then there would be a swatch sample! It’s my job! I have to knit them all.

Well… it is my plan to get some knitting time in this weekend so we will see how well that goes. Both of my girls head back to school this month. Sophie leaves on Tuesday which is way too soon and Rabia leaves at the end of August for grad school at Columbia. Exciting!!! Lots of change for the Newton clan.

I will be an empty nest mom for the first time ever. I firmly believe that this means I will get a ton more done. I am a little worried that this a delusion. I already have visitors lined up well into November. So…as I said we will see!

The opening ceremony for the Summer Olympics is today! Yay!! This also means the Ravellenics is under way also.  I hope all goes well for everyone participating and we all meet our goals.  I love the Opening Ceremonies!!

As I said last week this summer has gotten away from me so all of this was here before I realized it. I still made a colorway cause I’ve had this one in my head fro awhile now. I am calling it Rings of Glory based on the Olympic Rings.  It has stripes of colors that mimic the rings and some speckles too, cause why not!

We have dyed some in the three yarns we have on sale right now so if you order those we can get them out to you asap!!

Yes we have not one or even two but three yarns on special right now!

We still are running the LaGrande short run special which is quite the deal. 15.00 for a  lovely 3-ply super soft 100% Merino (superwashed). I’m a little sad that this is a short run I like it so much. Which you have probably noticed since I keep saying this is the last week and then here we are.

We have marked down both Seduction and Super Woobu-LITE  both of which are excellent summery yarns. Light and lofty with nice drape! One of my favorite pairs of summertime socks is a pair of Pond Scum footies out of Seduction. They wear well, are super cozy and not too hot!

Oh and Speaking of light and airy yarns have you seen this lovely design from Nona Davenport. Nona and her mom Leslie own All Wound Up in Edmonds Washington.

Foxy Ladies Wrap in our Woobu in the colorway Aquarius. Nona designed this pattern for All Wound Up Yarn shop’s first anniversary. I like this wrap because it plays with the color and yarn well and it features an easy to memorize lace pattern which is knit on the bias, giving it a fun and interesting trapezoidal shape. And really who does not enjoy a knit trapezoid!

So pretty!!!

As are these super fun socks!!!

Lion Tamers by designed by Rebecca Williamson

Don’t these look like a fun knit?!! Okay so who can guess the colorways she used? I love this color combo quite a bit, they highlight each other well.

Rebecca has offered a copy of the pattern to the first person who guesses the thwo colorways she used. Thank you Rebecca!!

Dye Camp

I have added two more Dye Camp Sessions!!! So what was a summer Camp is now just a Camp. If there is anything dye/colorwise you would like to see me offer please do let me know.  I think the next one I add will be lichen dyeing and then maybe some fabric printing. Great fun!

So Shannon and I are missing each other which means we need another KAL!!

Well, we’re doing it again – the two of us are teaming up for a great late-summer knitstravaganza, and this one is perfect for those in-between-other-projects knitting moments we all have. OR for that oh-my-I-can’t-think-about-anything-except-this-project weeks. However you want to do it, please join us for the…

SPECKLY SPARKLY ANKLE-Y SOCK-Y KNITALONG!

Blue Moon will be offering a 10% discount on Super Sparkle, starting on the 9th of August, in any colorway ~ we are partial to ALL OF THE SPECKLES right now, but any colorway works for this promotion ~ so you can make yourself a pair (or three!) of ankle socks for the fall!

Stay tuned for more details on how this is all going to work on Monday August 8th!! Check our Shannon’s Rav page for details on Monday!

okay that is a whole lot for one blog post!

I hope you all have a lovey weekend full of the things that make you happy!

Santa Rosa KAL Kit UPDATE:

As far as we know from our communications from the mill in Switzerland we are still good for the  Marine Silk Sport hitting the east coast on the 1oth and to us on 14th. I know! So very far away. It’s a great mill and they seriously rock the silk blending and spinning.

We have been trying to figure out the best way to handle new orders on the kits.

We’ve decided a first come, first serve, waiting list would be the best option. How it will work is if you want a kit you email us. We will put you on the wait list and when we know the yarn is on it’s way, which could be as early as this coming Monday-June 6th.  We will then  contact everyone on the list with a link for purchasing the yarn.  As soon as it hits our doorstep will move into the barn and dye it up as fast as we can to get it out to you as close to the cast-on date as humanly possible.

Those knitters we have already contacted whose orders we could not complete with the first batch of yarn of course, come first. Everyone else who has emailed us already I will be contacting this weekend to see what kit you want and if you’d like to be put on the waiting list.

If you want to be  on the waiting list for the Marine Silk Santa Rosa Plum KAL  kits please, email us at: info@bluemoonfiberarts.com. Put Santa Rosa KAL wait list in the subject line of your email.  What we need to know is which colorway kit you want and the size ( 4,5, or 6 skein size). All of that info is still on the website here and the discount will be good until we all have our yarn!! It would also help us to have your address and phone number.  Once we get your email we will send you a confirmation email back letting you know that we did.

I want to thank all of you for your patience and understanding. I know it is knitting and we all have projects to keep us occupied. You have all been so very gracious and kind. I just want you to know it is greatly appreciated!

Grading the Skein!!  Coming early next week,  one color gradient in a skein. I’ve done a few of these through the years but have always wanted to work a little more in this arena. Since I already had a base from the gradient kits I made for Carol’s Santa Rosa Cardigan I thought there is no time like the present. So here we are.  My favorite is the Deep Purple one using my Smoke on the Water shaded solid recipe as the base.  So many knit-possibilities here.

Also early next week we will be taking down the following coloways so if you feel the need to stock up the time is now!

As always if there colorways you would like to see return let us know in the comments section of this post. All of which brings us to our last question of birthday week.

If you could have only one color in your life what would that color be and why?  I know a scary thought. I certainly have a hard time with that concept. However it is interesting to ponder. As with all other parts of our Birthday Give-away please put  your answers in the comments section of this post.

What the prize is for this last but certainly not least day of celebrating life is a finely woven silk and wool scarf that I will paint in the palette of your choosing!

I will choose all of the rest our prize winners this weekend and announce them on Monday.

Thank you so much for celebrating my birthday with me it has been all kinds of fun!!! I have to say that so far the raven and writing desk question might be my favorite.

Oh…I almost forgot. BARN SALE!!!!!!!! Next weekend on Saturday the 11th  9 to 5. Those of you coming for the dyeing aspect please wear clothing that you do not mind getting dye on.

Those of you that are signed up for the 1st time slot please come around 8:30 to pick your yarn  that you are going to color out and get it all soaked. and ready.

We have a whole bunch of SALE goodies!!

What we do not have is a ton of PARKING space so we ask that if you can carpool that would be all kinds of wonderful.

I will post the directions on Monday when I announce the winners of the contest.

The address is 56587 Mollenhour Rd. Scappoose.

Okay it has been a week and I think I am actually going to take a before dinner prep. nap

Have a great weekend!

Stay cool!

Birthday Give-away day #6 & #7

Okay before we go into more Birthday-Give-away-fun let’s talk Santa Rosa Knit-a-long.

I know that this is not a perfect solution but I do think it is the best way to be fair and keep team Blue Moon sane.

Happy Knitting my friends!

Birthday Give-away Day #5

Okay so it has been a day. In my experience this is Tuesday’s payback when you make her pretend that she is Monday. She does not like it at all! I wouldn’t either.

Since it has been all kinds of crazy here today, and because I have been immersed in Alice in Wonderland research for a while now, and it is still my birthday week  for a few days, and…I love ravens, this is my question for you today.

Why is a Raven like a writing desk?

There are no wrong answers!

Winner gets…are you ready cause it’s really good?!! Our Single Silk Targhee is due to show up this week.  Yay!!!!!!!! Happy dancing all around the barn! So the winner get 2 skeins dyed in a Raven colorway!!!

Also because it is now the work week and we are all busy bees I am going to leave all the contests open from day #4 until Friday that way we have more time to ponder and play and more of us can play if we so choose.

Look at this!  The wonderful Kalia ( team blue moon) made this for me for my birthday. Kalia is all kinds of wonderful. We remind each other to be grateful!

Birthday Give-away day #4

Amazing how many of us would like the power to transport.

I agree!

Our winner of the day is Scarlet Fever with her wish to be a Super Communicator!!! If you could please email Paula@bluemoonfiberarts.com and she will hook you up with your Worthy. If you could tell her that you are the winner for day #3 and include your address!

********

Today’s sharing question is:  If you could share a meal with anyone present or historical (not living) who would that be and why.

Today’s sharing question will be the last simple easy peasy one.

Today’s Give-away is 2 skeins of our Cloud 9 dyed in any Blue Moon colorway you would like.

Cloud 9 in all of it’s glory!

Birthday Give-away #3

Hello all, today is going to be short and sweet. I might have over celebrated last night so… .

ZenJen07 is our winner from yesterday. Please contact Paula@bluemoonfiberarts.com for your prize. She will need to know that it was day #2 and the color or colors you would like us to dye your Featherlight in. Oh, also your address please.

Our Give-away today is a little bit of yarn crack, our Worthy Fingering.  What’s not to love about cashmere and silk? Not a damn thing!

If you’d like a chance to win a skein of Worthy Fingering in the color of your choice then in the comments section of this post share your answer to the following question.

If you had a super-hero-power what would that power be?  Would you like to leap tall buildings in a single bound, scale walls with your spidey powers, move things with you mind or knit in your sleep?

I’m having a hard time choosing what I would like mine to be. Hmm…maybe I should sleep on it.

Okay this older lady is off to take a birthday nap.
