And then there was one!

After 20 years I am back to the daily running Blue Moon all by myself at the moment. It’s been a long time since I did all the things all the time and I am not going to lie I’m a little tired. In the grand scheme of things I am lucky because I can work and my work keeps my mind occupied and my self busy creating beauty for others to create beauty out of. So I am counting myself blessed.

I was dyeing web orders yesterday and infusing all the yarn with as much light and love as I could, of course along with all the color too! So today after I finish this it is back to dyeing and rinsing so I can ship tomorrow.

A lot of you have been either emailing or posting on instagram what you are working on. Thank you so very much it’s so great to see. I always enjoy seeing your projects but especially so now. I am pretty good at being alone but this is a little challenging. I miss my team. They are all healthy so yay! I hope you all are staying home if you can and being super careful!

One of the things I dyed this past week was an order for Loop London. The owner Susan ordered a lot of our older colorways so that was a fun trip down memory lane. One of my favorites was Mad REAL which is such a bright and happy hue.

Isn’t pretty?!

Now there is a life affirming color, if I ever saw one. Big and bold.  I have put it along with quite a few other of our older colorways on the website for the next week or so. If there is an older colorway you’d like to see just let me know. infoa@bluemoonfiberarts.com

Also up on the website is our SilkMO Lace!!!  Because it is just me here I did not have time to add in all of the colorways. So you will see just the Snowflake colorway. How you order is to choose a colorway from the colorway search option. Then Select the Snowflake SilkMO Lace and once it is in your shopping cart then in the comments section let me know what colorway you want. Easy Peasy!! Please note that there are two yardage options. We are offering it in 300 yd skeins and 900 . Since a lot of us are carrying it with other yarns for garments I thought the bigger skeins would be helpful. The colorway shown below is: That 70’s skein

Before I go any further we are for the time being continuing the 20% discount on all yarns. The code you need for that is: supporteachother2020 and it is good for multiple uses.

One of our designers and friend is offering this lovely shawlette pattern free on RAV right now. Powell’s City of Books by Star Athean

She is offering this pattern in support of a Powells, a Portland treasure that has had to temporarily (we hope and pray) close it’s brick and mortar during this time. If you need books pleas consider buying online from them instead of you know who. It’s important we support small and locally owned business during this crisis we find ourselves in. We all have a skein of fingering-weight in our stash just begging to be this shawlette!

There are quite a few designers offering free patterns right now in order to spread the love. Which is super generous on their part. So a big thanks to all of them for their kindness and generosity.

IMG_3035_medium2

Oh my have yo seen this sweater? Oh KT this is right up your alley!

It’s Luna by Espcae Tricoter

So pretty knit with a light fingering-weight and a laceweight mohair held together!! Perfect for our Gaea Fingering and SilkMO Lace!! Also could use Soft Rock in place of the Gaea. So lovely!

Okay I have some other things but need to get to the barn to set up and this is also getting long so I will post again tomorrow!

Oh before I go though Blue Moon is looking for test and sample knitters. If you are interested please contact me at info@bluemoonfiberarts.com and put sample knitter in the subject line.

Thank you!!!

Stay well and safe!

LOVE

In the time a social distancing

Honestly I am not quite sure how to start except from my heart. So…here goes, first I hope you all are taking care as best you can.  I know we are all scared and doing our very best to not only protect ourselves and each other.

As most of you know Blue Moon has been around for quite awhile (20 years this year)  and is my sole support and also a few of our team. In order to protect everyone’s health and well being here we’ve been a skeleton crew for a few weeks now.  It has become clear as this all progresses and our Governors issue shut downs that all of us small business owners are going to have to make some very hard choices. If you own or work for a small business you know how heartbreaking this all is. Small teams easily become a family of sorts. We spend our days together working for the greater fiber and knit good in the world.

I just want you to know where we are in all of this. I am here working as much as humanly possible with the support of  2 part time team members for now. We are so very careful with so very much hand washing, space and cleaning.  Luckily we are rural and on 5 acres in the woods so it’s a bit easier to distance form the world at large. Since I am one of those at risk people I am not working in the same space as others! We’ve gotten seriously creative. We have meetings in the driveway in a big circle. It took quite awhile to get this team together and I am so proud and honored to be able to work with each and everyone! Goodness this is sure not how I thought we would be experiencing our 20th year.

IMG_0438 (1)

We are all in this together!  As I have said many, many times we would not do what we do without you, our fiber loving artists and creators. If you are in a position where can support us and other small businesses you value at this time we are so grateful for that support. Right now we will offering a 20%  gratitude discount which covers shipping costs and a little more. That code is: supporteachother2020

Okay let’s move on.

So everyone is predicting a baby boom in the next year with all of this social distancing togetherness. It’s a fair assessment. I am going to predict a design boom and much sooner than 9 months. I think we are already seeing the beginnings of one. Here are just a few that struck my fancy this week.

Far Away Dreams by Joji Locatelli

I can tell you right away why this one appeals to me. I do love a plain bit of knitting framed with a bit of lace. Also it’s black and a white speckled with black which is right in my most wearable wheel house. I know I am looking for more simple knits with just enough patterning to keep me engaged and my mind from wandering. I think this fits the bill perfectly. I’m thinking our Feahterlight, Soft Rock or …our La Luna Fingering are wonderful options.  I’m gonna use our Black Onyx and DotCom colors I think. Although really there are so very many color options here like make the lace part darker and the garter fabric lighter or one a solid and one not and one and on! If you need help choosing let me know I would LOVE to help.

Brioche Starter Hat by Raina K

One of the things it might be fun to do during this time is learn a new skill or technique. Right?!  True confessions time, believe it or not, I have yet to master brioche knitting. Even though years and years ago, JC Briar our tech editor at the time turned me onto the joys and wonder of Brioche. I have yet to  give it a whirl so that is my challenge. I thought this hat was super cute and and good beginning point. So that is what I am going to do. I noticed on the pattern that even though she calls for worsted weight that sport weight was what most people were getting gauge with so I am going to use our brand new yarn (yes we have a new yarn) Comet. It’s so lovey and perfect for this project and seriously reasonable priced which is one of the reason we brought it in. Hmm…what colors should I use. Oh and did you see the coordinating pom? Too cute!! I see these as a good knit and save for presents.

Peasant Surprise by Hannah Maciejewska

Summer is coming! The first day of Spring was on Thursday so warmer sunny and brighter days will come! I think this would be a great summer topper of a tank or sundress. It’s light and lacy and sized for pretty much all of us! Thank you for that Hannah!!

IMG_1350_small2

I would use our Soft Rock for this one or our La Luna Lace both are lovely light fingering weights that will not be too warm for those cooler Summer evenings. Actually for the Pacific Northwest it would be absolute perfection!

As I mentioned we have a new yarn. We actually have a few I have just not had the time to get them up.

IMG_7168

This is our Comet  in our Sturgeon Moon colorway. Comet is a sport weight and is quite a lovely yarn. I wanted a yarn that was seriously suitable for baby knits and also blankets. I really wanted a blanket yarn so we could all make moon blankets with the full moon colors. Give it a try and let me know what you think. I think you are going to love it!

And look…

Colorway shown: That 70’s Skein

SilkMo is back finally!! We have made a few changes so I am looking to get those up on the website also. We are calling this one SilkMo Lace since it is a bit finer and softer too!! Also we are offering it in either 300 yd skeins or 900 yards skeins. I know a lot of us are holding the finer silk mohair yarns with other yarns in bigger projects so we though the bigger skeins a good idea. I might go ahead and get this up as yarn choices and then add the colors as we go. So you would be able to order it and just type in the colorway you want in the comments section. hmm…

okay my friends that is a lot and I have yet to get out to the barn today to dye so I need to wrap this up.

We are all in this together and …We’ve got this!

Love!!!

PS: Love notes are welcome we will be sending a bunch out your way. Also looking at setting up some live knit session via zoom and or FB.

Knit on!!

“Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn’t hurt the untroubled spirit either.”
Elizabeth Zimmerman
We are all scared and worried and rightly so. There’s so much  unknown about this virus and that leaves us with little to now control which we human beings are very uncomfortable with.
Our best tool besides hand washing and social distancing is our craft whether it is knitting, spinning, weaving, crocheting, sewing… we create one stitch , one row, one seam, one thread at a time.
What a blessing!!!
We are so equipped for this moment in time.
We will get through this all together. We are each  and everyone one if us a stitch that makes up such a beautifully strong and resilient fabric. Our diversity is our strength!
Stay safe my lovelies and wash those hands.
Oh my goodness is anyone else surprised at the amount of times we touch our faces!
love!

2.2.2020

Happy Universal Palindrome Day!!!

IMG_6905

This year is just so full of all kinds of wonder which is great because we kind of need it! There has not been one of these since 11.11.1111 which was 900 years ago. And there will not be another for 101 years in 12.12.2121 and then again until 03.03.3030.

Why do I feel that it is so magical?  Well… happenings and experiences tend to be special in their rarity. And don’t you think it’s those things that we do not experience all the time that inspire us to notice and then hopefully appreciate the wonder of the world we live in. It’s that ability to see and feel these magic moments that give us the energy to not just get through our days, but to be fueled to create and change our world.

Anyway…we are celebrating this day!! I can’t believe we are celebrating our 20th year this year of all years.

Speaking of magic have you seen some of the sweater designs being published?! Oh my there is most definitely not enough knitting hours in the day.

Okay let’s start with this beauty!

IMG_4536_medium2 IMG_1707_medium2

Water Bearer by Jacqueline Cieslak

So pretty! That brioche front panel and collar are just lovely and then the contrast between it and the stockinette is just poetic! I think this will look good on all of us! She had this cropped version and a longer one. I do love choices!! It’s knit in a DK weight ~ seems like everything is right now. So CAKE DK or Silky Victoria or La Luna DK or Crackpaca all would work for this lovely!  (photo credit JacquelineCieslak)

And then there’s…..

Joji Locatelli and her Pebble Tunic

I am a sucker for a tunic! Add pockets and I am a goner. Tunics are just so cozy and I am big on my clothing being cozy! Pebble also uses a DK weight yarn. The gauge on this is pretty open so be aware of the fiber content on the yarn you choose so you don’t get a tunic that grows! We are recommending our CAKE DK. (photo credit Joji Locatelli)

Since we  are on a DK roll …. Rose by Andrea Yetman    A lovely pullover with seriously nice lines and look at those sleeves!! Perfect for our more neutral shaded solids. Also I think I would choose our La Lune DK for this one. (photo credit Andrea Yetman)

And here we step outside of our DK and knit creative box with this super cool ( I’m in love) crocheted cardigan in fingering weight yarn!!! Just about any of our fingering weight yarns would work here but I think I would choose La Luna again.I think the silk component would make this super dreamy!  (photo credit 2020 MEZ Crafts UK, Ltd.)

Well my friends that is quite a lot of creative fodder!!

In case you missed it the 2020 Rockin’ Sock Club Space Odyssey sign-ups are live!!!

I do hope you’ll join us!

Eclipsing Wolf Moon in Cancer

Friday was the first full moon of the decade and also a penumbral lunar eclipse. I think it’s the first of  six eclipses, three of which are penumbral this year. What a great way to ring in the new decade and…to start the beginning of our 20 year Anniversary Celebration year.

20 years old in the year 2020 and… because all the things are lining up ~Pantone made the color of the year blue just for us!!

I am predicting a very Blue Moon year!

Karen was here this week for a visit and we made all the creative plans for the year. Well not all but quite a few. We even put it in a weekly calendar spread sheet which made us both very happy. Karen because she loves nothing more that creating spreadsheets and me because I do not and well…you get it.

I loved creating the monthly full moon colors last year so we are going to continue with those, along with whatever over celestial events that happen this year. In order to spice things up and to distinguish our 2020 full moon colorways from 2019 we are looking at the astrology of each full moon. Yes we are ! And… we have a plan for all of these colorways that I have been stewing over for awhile now so am pretty excited that we are making it happen. I am not going to mention again until next week since I promised. And the picture below is not a hint at all. ;0)

So stay tuned!

Hey did you see Thea Colman’s newest cardigan, Gin and Juice? I think she released it last weekend. It’s stunning and a perfect design for our beloved Targhee Worsted. One could also use our CAKE Worsted but I think Targhee would be divine!

Look at that cable pattern!! Such a classic silhouette and I so love that wide collar. A design that is going to look good on all shapes and sizes. That collar though…so sexy. Thank you Thea for such a stunning sweater for us to knit and wear.

Over the holidays besides other year end work I spent some time cleaning out my spinning bag and stash. I finished some yarns in progress and when I went to store them came across this beauty. My fist ever handspun. Yup, I still have it. I really should make something out of it. Maybe weave some chair pads. Hmm… . Anyway we just wrapped up the 2019 Rockin’ Whorl  and I was feeling a little sad about that so all of this inspired me to put up the next trio and to switch it up a bit with more texture and a lot more creativity.

I think most of us tend to keep spinning the same yarn and while it is relaxing and meditative it does not challenge us so…we are going to add some twists, and coils and loops and whatever we can dream up to our yarn making. The first shipment will leave here the first week in February. I have help this year with the lovely Michael Kelson who teaches spinning here in the Pacific Northwest and is as talented in yarn making as he is a lovely human being!

I do hope you will join us. I’m wanna see what yarn making mojo we can create together!!

the Rockin’ Whorl Club 2020 is live!!

It’s supposed to snow here this week which I am not really looking forward to. There’s been a lot of hype about it and everyone is stocking up. Anyway fingers crossed everyone stays safe.

I am working on some neutrals that I am pretty thrilled with but am having trouble naming them. Here are the first three. I was going to ad them to the coven series since they are kind of tinted greys but it does not feel right. Maybe you have some thoughts on what they should be. There will be at least 8 in total so… a theme would be nice. Maybe after women in science.

I am in love with these and they look especially wonderful on Soft Rock. Anyway I would love your feedback.

2019 sock club is wrapped up! yay!!!!  2020 will go up for sale in a few weeks so look for that. If you are not on our mailing list email me and we will put you on. info@bluemoonfiberarts.com

Silk School of Yarn notes are going out this week. Karen had a family thing which has slowed this part of the process down.

Socks that Rock that Rock Stars ship at end of week!

If you have a FO you would like to share. If you could post it to instagram we will repost and share with the world! If you are not on instagram and still want to share email it to me and I will post and share your creations. info@bluemoonfiberarts.com

Okay my friends I am off and running today there is much to do. I am celebrating 5 years since my last chemo treatment with my dear friend Gail who quite honestly I would not have made it through without. I think it is important to honor and celebrate these milestones. A good day!

I am going to leave you with this pretty which shows a bit of all the color that came from our instagram pics this year.

Have a great day!

Winter is here!!

Merry MidWinter!

Nature remembers what we humans have forgotten:

Every cycle must return to stillness, silence, the dark;

Every out-breath requires an in-breath;

Every outreach turns back inward to  source and begins again;

From endings come beginnings and from

the darkest night a new dawn.

Happy Winter Solstice!!!

Holiday Wishes

Nothing says Merry and Joyful like chickens in the snow!! Whenever I am thinking a sending out a holiday message and am looking for a photo I always seem to be drawn to this one. If you have ever seen chickens in the snow you would understand.

So…how’s that holiday knitting going. If you are like me it goes until the very last minute!

I do love this time of year! I feel like I have not been able to enjoy some of my family rituals this year so it’s a little more challenging to find that light. When you do though it’s pretty magical and often not where you expect to find it.

So my dear ones wherever you are on on our wonderful planet and however you celebrate my flock of lovelies and I wish you so much love and peace!

Remember to be kind and patient with one another. (Family is great but can also be trying.) Spread the love. A kind word, nod or gesture goes a long way. There are miracles and magic everywhere you just have to pay attention! And always remember that your life has worth!!

Thank you so much for being a part of our lives! You are our joy!

Blessings!!

Winter Solstice

Yesterday was Winter Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere which means Winter is in fact officially here!

Screen Shot 2019-12-22 at 8.25.34 AM

I was going to write this yesterday but I’ve been limiting my screen time the past week since I fell and hit my head. I know…such a klutz. I’m fine so no worries. I have fallen a lot in my life so I am used to the aftermath and this one was not too bad.  I do not have the best balance and I move way too fast for my own good. Winter is here which means rain (which makes slippery mud).

Lots and lots of rain!

They’re calling the storm currently blowing through the PNW right now an “atmospheric river”. Really?! When did this current trend of giving weather systems dramatic tag lines happen. As one who names things I totally get the appeal and it’s a hell of a lot of rain for sure and in a short amount of time. However, let’s be real, it is not a flippin’ river and dramatizing just makes everyone nervous. I think maybe the fact that I find this irritating is either a sign on my age or that I have not had enough coffee.

All of this rain is filling all of the creeks and rivers so do be careful and maybe some of us should slow down.

On Winter Solstice I built a fire , made a big pot of soup, lit all the candles and I spun some lovely BFL Tussah in our Super Worm Moon colorway which is one of my favorites. You can see why…

IMG_6344

IMG_6350

I am mesmerized by the color combinations and as you can see here I am also knitting some Ripple in it along with the spinning of it. Look at it in these different fibers. There’s BFL Mix roving and BFL Tussah and Silk hankies. I am going to spin all three and ply then together making a stunning yarn!

When I am all done I will make sure to post pictures. I’m so excited!! My girls can’t be here for the holidays this year which is a bit hard for me so the time I am not spending with my son and daughter-in-law I am filling my time with creative joy.

I know from my own experience that this can be a hard time of year for a lot us. Please know that you are not alone in this and that there is love and light for us all. If you need to reach out I am here please do! I would love to hear from you. tina@bluemoonfiberarts.com

IMG_6600

Of course I made a Winter Solstice colorway! It’s a grey that grades from dark to white with shades of blue speckles. I’m pretty tickled with it. I hope you like it. So many celestial colorways this year. It’s going to be hard to top in 2020 but do not worry for I have a plan ( gleefully rubs hands together). After all 2020 is our year. We turn 20 so it’s 20:20:20 for us which has to hold all sorts of magic.

I am going to leave you with some Solstice thoughts and work on my to do list for the day. I hope you all have a lovely Sunday. I will post again during this week!!

It’s very early in the morning and instead of tossing and turning I’m decided I would make use of this time to write this post. I have a hard time with the whole fall back and gain an hour time change. I never really adjust to it. Luckily for me in 2020 Oregon goes to constant daylight savings time so this is the last shift. I am thrilled!

It’s been a very busy week in Blue Moonland with the Full Beaver moon in all of it’s glory starting the week off.

IMG_6322

Our new dyers Kelsie and Karen are catching on so very fast and we are getting caught up on all the things.  I actually had tie this week to make new colors! I know!!! And get this…to knit. I mean in al honesty I should be putting more time in on getting the new website tested so we can get it up. However there is only so many hours at a stretch that I can stare at a computer screen without my brain melting and my eyes hurting.

Anyway I am knitting a very simple infinity scarf for myself. Yup for me!! I am knitting it in our Ripple and I am seriously possessed with this yarn. I am not usually a fan of bulky knitting but I’m telling you the texture and color on this is addicting. I know I am driving team Blue Moon a little crazy with my constant delight. I am one of those knitters that talks to their knitting praising it for it’s beauty, complimenting it on how it feels at it slips through my fingers and onto the needles and then how each stitch display into  a stunning fabric.

IMG_6344

I’m smitten! I am knitting it in our Super Worm Moon colorway and just having the best time. I am challenged enough in life right now that my knitting needs to be the mindless kind that soothes and comforts and this sure is doing the trick.

IMG_6350

I am farther along than this picture shows but it is shows off the color and it’s dark out still so I can’t take a picture yet this morning to show it off more! Don’t worry I will! If you have not yet ordered this I highly recommend that you do. It’s soooo good!

It’s time for a color change so we’ve sent some of the more Autumn colors off to the spa and added in some of our Holiday ones as promised. As I mentioned I’ve been making new colorways so we will be adding those in also in the next few weeks. If there are any Holiday or Winter type colorways of ours you’d liek to see please do let us know.

Also if you have any color wishes for new colors. I’m feeling super inspired at the moment working on some crazy cool neutrals and complex shaded solids along with some other fun  color ideas I have had floating around in my little color brain.

IMG_6286

Okay well it’s time to go out and get things prepped for the day. We’ve been blessed with extraordinarily beautiful mornings as of late so my walk morning walk to the dye barn has been quite magical. I had my morning coffee earlier in the week standing in the garden with Phoebe bathed in mystical foggy moonlight!

Have a wonderful day!!

Autumn!

Don’t you imagine the leaves dream now
how comfortable it will be to touch
the earth instead of the
nothingness of the air and the endless
freshets of wind? And don’t you think
the trees, especially those with
mossy hollows, are beginning to look for

the fires that will come—six, a dozen—to sleep
inside their bodies? And don’t you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye,
the everlasting being crowned with the first
tuffets of snow? The pond
stiffens and the white field over which
the fox runs so quickly brings out
its long blue shadows. The wind wags
its many tails. And in the evening
the piled firewood shifts a little,
longing to be on its way.

A Song for Autumn by Mary Oliver
