It’s a wonderful night for a moon dance!

“Well, it’s a marvelous night for a moon dance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
‘Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I’m trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night’s magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush
Can I just have one more moon dance with you, my love”

It’s full moon tonight!! This one is the Hunter’s Moon which is the first full moon after the Autumn Equinox.  I have made so very many full moon colorways this year and while it has been all kinds uf fun and illuminating, (hehe)I’m not gonna lie I am finding it a little challenging at the moment. I mean  colorwise it’s the moon and a night sky if we are being literal. I am not a creatively literal person when it comes to translating and interpretation so phew! Since it’s the Hunter’s Moon I had this grand idea that I would use hunter camo colors. I actually was pretty tickled with myself for this little bit of inspiration. However it proved a little more difficult than I thought. I either got muddiness because, ya know the whole camo thing or it just was not what my vision was. I finally got  something I am happy with and 2 other colors in the process which does often happen.
What do you think?
IMG_5997
There’s my Hunter’s Moon! It was Pond Scum that saved the day on this one. I can’t tell you how often that is true! haha
And then….
IMG_5998
because I loved my muted camo hues I made a colorway with just them. I had a hard time coming up with a name for it other than CamoLITE so I asked our insagram folks and got a ton of wonderful suggestions. I chose Catacomb Mushrooming because they do look like mushroom colors and I had just read the piece about Paris using it’s abandoned catacombs to grow mushrooms and seriously why not!
Our Autumn Moon Glow ( pictured above) is inspired by the warmly wonderful orangeness of the moon this time of year!! I just could not resist. Orange is kind of a thing right now and it’s such a lovely color so I am going to be taking advantage of our orange crush ( get it?!)

Photo and knit credit on this beauty goes to @mtnstitches
Rhinebeck is next weekend and everyone is heading that way in their stunning sweaters! I love seeing what everyone has been knitting all over social media. Beside the octopus one I think this Weekender in Pond Scum might be my current favorite. It turned out so well and… bear with me while I am going to toot my own horn here. I had to match yarn she bought in  forever ago and it worked perfectly! Don’t you love when that happens. I do my best to make this so but when it has been sooo long and both the yarn and dye has changed it’s just way more of a challenge. I’m over my blue moon self that it worked!
Okay so remember a few weeks ago when I said we were going to be making some price changes? Well that is happening this week. It is mostly on our big hanks of garment yarns. We are going to do our best to hold off on the sock yarns right now. Please know that we do our very best to keep prices affordable for you while being able to make ends meet here.
Thank you as always for your support.
In 2020 we are going into our 20th year which is quite amazing especially after the year we just had and that is because of you!! There is no us without you. Our makers are the heart and soul of who we are and what we do. So my friends we are going to celebrate so very much!!

Okay I need to go wrap up dyer’s notes and send out a few emails and then also go pick up this sweetheart! I might be a little excited.

Have a great Sunday!

knit this!!!

It’s a quiet and lovely Saturday morning. I have my coffee, the sun streaming through my window and my knitting! I am knitting a hat for friend out of our Plushy in one of our Rare Gem colorways.

Plushy is such a delight to knit with. I usually do not enjoy knitting with heavier weight yarns but Plushy  just feels so good and the stitch definition is so great. Watching the all those knits and purls situate themselves is just delightful! So…a good morning.

Today I am going to share with you some of my current favorite designs. Some are new and some are just wonderful and today is about the wonderful.

Okay let’s start with a small obsession of mine the Octopus. I love these under the sea creatures. I am fascinated by them but also have a healthy respect for their intelligence. So I am going to love anything related to them but this, oh my… .

Embrace Octopus Sweater by Maia E. Sirnes

If I remember  correctly  Maia’s design came out sometime in 2013. I was entranced and planned on knitting it which to be honest has yet to happen. It is on my list and towards the top so the odds are pretty good!  One of our Eat Sleep Knitters ( Jen aka @tentacularly) has been knitting this beauty out of our Targhee Worsted in; Blue is the New Black and Coral Bells and posting her progress on instagram and well, just look!

Everyone  knitter on Team Blue Moon wants to make this one. Hell, I am not a huge coral fan and I want to make this one. It’s a great color combination in general but especially for and octopus/water theme.

I knew something was going down when we started getting orders for these starting last week. So of course now my color brain is thinking of others  octo-color combos for Maia’s lovely design. Also… why do I not have a Octopus color series? What is wrong with me?

Porcini background color and Bluebird of Happiness for our Octopod friend. Oh my… and here I was going to work on new Autumn and Halloween hues this weekend.

And speaking of Bluebird of Happiness ( I swear I did not plan this segueway)

Look at this beauty!!

Farmers Poncho by Lavanya Patricella

I pretty much love anything Lavanya designs she has such a wonderful design aesthetic. And I do have a soft spot for a poncho and this one is brioche!!! I know!

Also an instagram follow/find. One of Lavanya’s test knitters, Kat ( @katknitz) color and yarn choices which just happen to be our yarns!!

She used one of our, A Total Eclipse of the Sun  Featherlight gradient kits  as the main color and then for the contrast colors used another Featherlight in Shadow and then Socks that Rock Lightweight in Grasshopper Green and Bluebird of Happiness.

I don’t know about you but I would wear this everywhere. It looks cozy, has wonderful flattering lines and… it leaves room for movement. I love where it hits on the arm too. I’ve already dyed the yarn to cast on for this one!

Okay I do have a few more but this post is getting lengthy. One more…in the latest issue of Ply Magazine is this beauty by Cal Patch.

Look at that texture! So lovely!

Okay my lovelies I need to send out a few update newsletters before the day gets away from me.

The last color club shipment goes out this coming week all about value! Working on the next sock club and Star Sponsorship and getting the Spinning club notes out this weekend. My spinning wheel broke which kind of messed things up a bit. And of course I have loaned all my others out so…

I will be introducing our new team members to you very soon. We have 2 new dyers Marit and Karen. We love them, especially the me of we!

Because a bunch of you have asked we have about 70 skeins of BFL Sport left and then we are done. I have been assured there is no more hiding away in corners of the mill. I have a selfish request. If you do want some of this BFL before it is no longer, please do order it soon so we do not have to add it to the new website as an option. Thank you!!

Oh and if you have any Autumn or Halloween color theme ideas do let us know. info@bluemoonfiberarts,com

Okay lovelies have a wonderful weekend!

I ran across this photo this week and was just smitten.  Might need to make a platypus colorway.

A few of you have requested Winter holiday colorways  so you can get started on holiday gift knitting. It’s a little early to just add these to our color rotation for the season since we just put the Autumn colors up. So we are going to do a short run for a few days. We’ve put up a whole bunch of our most popular holiday hues. These will be on the website until Wednesday the 25th of September. If there is one that you are interested that you do not see please let us know! Below is a list of the colorways we have added!  And we are offering a 10% discount for order over 50.00 also good until Wednesday.

This one is Elf on of my favorites. I am working on new colorways so if you have any theme of color ideas that you’d like to suggest I would love to hear.

Alright my lovelies I am off to do a whole lot of writing, planning and an errand or two.

Have a great Sunday!!

New!!!!

Hello!!

I know it’s been awhile. I really had nothing new to report and had my head, heart and soul in the dye pot getting all the things dyed so we could get you your yarn.

Also we’ve been interviewing for new dyers. And…are you ready? It’s good!! We hired one this week and probably will hire another next week. I know!!!! So much happy dancing in the barn I will tell you.

We are over the moon thrilled.

I will share more as we get to know our new team members. I can’t tell you how happy I am. It most definitely has been a summer.

Okay so we have new colorways!! The end if Summer moving into Autumn is my all time favorite time of the year. So much color and some of my favorite types of color. So rich and with layers upon layers and then there is all of those down and dirty colors. My color happy place for sure so look for more and more new colors as we move into Autumn.

Some of the new colors I made are for the winners of the instagram contest we held. So much fun making color based on an image or someone else’s inspiration. I think I did pretty well. I still have one more to go. I made it but am unhappy with it so it is back to the dye pot. Here are the ones I did and they are up on the website right now.

There are a few other new colorways also!

It is also time for our seasonal color shift!

So I am in the process of taking some of our brighter summer hues down and adding in our Autumn ones. If there is one of our colorways you would like to see make a come back please do let us know!

We will be shipping out the 2nd installment of the silk School of Yarn. The last installment of the color club will follow right behind that as will the next sock club shipment which will have us all caught up there.

We are waiting on a few things from the mill like our Superfoot roving and Single Silk Targhee.

Soft Rock is back in stock. Yay!!!

Please do email info@bluemoonfiberarts.com if you have any questions or concerns. We have sent out bulk emails but we do get fire-walled and spammed out when we do that.

On a personal note my little Bruce friend is no longer with us. Since I have shared with you our experiences together I thought I would share this too.

Bruce and I had a very special bond. Except for my dog Luna that I had in my twentys I have not experienced one like this since then so I am pretty bereft. I will miss her tons and so appreciate all the support I have been given!

Barn Sale !!!!!! Saturday August 3rd 9 to 5

barn

We are sooo looking forward to seeing everyone. You know it’s so funny every year I go through this thing where I panic thinking we do not have enough sale yarn. The the week before the sale we start pulling it out of the storage and sorting through it for pricing and hanging up and… then team Blue Moon laughs at me. Because in fact, we have plenty of sale yarn!

And this year I am de-stashing! So there will be all kinds of yarns some even that are not ours.  Books and maybe a spinning wheel or 2.

I know!!!

So very many pretties! We can’t wait to see you all!

Okay a few things.

If you are dyeing please either bring an apron or dress in clothes you do not mind getting dye on.

Please come 20 minutes before your scheduled time so you can pick the yarn you are dyeing and we can get it soaking.

Stash enhancers if you can bring your own bags we would be ever so grateful.

Thanks!

Below you will find the directions.  We ask that when you are coming down our gravel drive that you go very very slowly. Like 10 miles an hour slow.

We are at the end of that gravel drive so please go all the way down and DO NOT stop at the house  with the big tan barn that is on the right.

Go down to the big RED barn!! We will be out directing traffic in the am when it is the busiest.

Carpool if you can. The weather is going to be lovely so if you want to bring a picnic we have a lovely back yarn behind the barn.

okay I think that covers it!

Here are the directions:

56587 Mollenhour Scappoose Oregon 97056
Google maps works pretty well.
Cell service gets kind of sketchy once you head up the hill.

If you are coming from Portland or Vancouver you want I-405 to US 30 West
towards St.Helens
You will be on this for about 14 miles.
You are going to drive all the way through Scappoose to the end of town.
Right after the fire station is the last traffic light which is
Scappoose-Vernonia Highway
You are going to turn left onto Scappoose-Vernonia Hwy
Go about 7 miles up. It’s a pretty and curvy drive!
Turn left onto Chapman Road
Go about quarter of a mile and then turn left onto Mollenhour Road
Go about an eighth of a mile and  our gravel drive is right after a row of
mailboxes where the 1st one has 56587 on it.
Also…there’s a huge piece of driftwood with a green house number sign on
it.
The gravel road dead ends into Blue Moon. So drive all the way down.

Note: Before Chapman Road there is a Chapman Grange Road. You DO NOT want that one!

Okay see you very,very soon!!!

The Blue Moon Experience

When we have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the tools of our craft we are more successful in our making which in turn nourishes our self-esteem empowering us to create like we have never created before.

The Blue Moon Experience is a video platform for us to share with you all we do and what we know. I love the name because it encompasses me sharing my experience and creating an experience for us all.  We are starting off with a monthly experience called Essentials that is themed. You will get a 30 minute video you can watch whenever you like. There will also be a Live Q&A every month that goes into more detail and gives you the opportunity to ask questions and..get answers. I’m super excited about this part since it gives me more of a connection with you. It’s one of the things I have been missing since I stopped doing the shows. My people!

And then there’s the Courses…I so love teaching! it was actually a surprise for me how much I love it. I learned this at the first Sock Camp and have been teaching in one way or another ever since. And since not everyone can get to the hills of  Scappoose Oregon to take classes then doing more in-depth video courses is the next logical step so that is what we are doing.

Once we get this part launched we will be adding in other levels and also components. We will also be have discussions with all kinds of wonderful people from our industry including folks you usually do no get to hear from like ranchers, mill workers, brokers, events leaders to name a few. We are calling this YARN VOICES!  So much goes into the skein of yarn you are using I think it’s important to understand that and to connect with it. I am lucky because I get tot work with such a wide range of people with such expertise and I am so thrilled to be able to share this and connect us all a little more.

I am very, very, excited about this and also as I mentioned earlier slightly terrified. I am very comfortable teaching and even talking to large groups but the video aspect brings up all kinds of emotional debris from my childhood. I experienced a fair amount of child abuse and one of the internal decisions I made was if you are not seen or heard than there is less chance you will be hurt so this one has raised it’s head for me to deal with and I am. Any chance we have to rid ourselves of baggage that no longer serves us and keep us from being all that we can be is a great day.

If there are any topics you would like me to cover I would LOVE to hear from you. We’ve done our best to keep this affordable so it is accessible while making sure we also make a living wage. Do let us know if you have any questions. info@thebluemoonexperience.com

Strawberry Moon!

Another full moon is upon us. Oh my goodness how is it already the middle of June already. My how time flies when you are down a dyer or two? Okay our new worker bee waltzes in the door on Monday so I am one happy camper. I can’t tell you how excited I am. Juggling too many yarn balls at the moment!

IMG_4872 (1)

June’s full moon is called the Strawberry Moon because it signaled the time when the strawberries were ripe for picking.  So…of course,  I went with a nice strawberry red with a touch of spearmint green amid a dusky dark sky. i had fun creating this colorway. I made a brand new red and green to make this one happen! So look for those soon. I am working on some new shaded solids that I am pretty excited about. I made this new green that just makes my green loving heart overjoyed.

I’ve been wanting to add to our shaded solid colors for awhile now. Sometimes we need a little push and the Cara’s Susurrate Shawl is just the push I needed. When I was putting color combo’s together I found that there was colors I was missing so… of to the dye pot to make that happen.

Here are a few of the color combo’s I have put together so far for Susurrate. If you need help choosing please do email me. I will remind everyone to order sooner than later. Also contrast on these is important otherwise that stunning pattern will no be visible and you want to see all of that leafy/vine brioche goodness.

In the Garden Armwarmers By Angela Westover

Have you seen this wonderful mitts? I saw them on instagram and then Angela contacted me with the link to the pattern. As someone who fluctuates in body temperature I love the long arms on these.  Also they really show off the colorways, especially the speckles. She used Sock that Rock Lightweight.

So pretty. If you are starting your holiday knitting I think these would be all kinds of an awesome gift. I think these are one of those patterns we knit over and over again!

Okay remember that there is a 15% percent discount for the Susurrate Shawl . The code is: susurrate19

Also… our mill has found more of our beloved BFL Sport so I have made it available on the website again. I think there are a hundred or so skeins so if you missed out the first time now is your absolutely last shot and we are lucky to have it!

Susurrate Shawl

The story of a shawl and the birth of a designer!!

A little over a year ago I got an email from my dear friend Cara ( aka January One) asking me if I was interested in working with her on a design she was had a vision for that she was slightly obsessed with. I am pretty much always game to work on pretty much anything with Cara. I believe in her and we usually have all kinds of fun! Also… I was super intrigued by what she sent me in her email.

*****************************************

“So I’m trying my hand at designing a brioche shawl. I’ve had this idea in my head for forever and I can’t get it out so I’m putting it to needles and yarn. I’m attaching a picture of what I have so far. I’m using the leftovers from my eyeball shawl. My idea is that it’s a tree, with branches at the top that flow into big leaves then smaller leaves which flows into flowers and buds at the bottom and then a flower-ish border. If you like what I have so far, want to talk about yarn? I want to use lightweight. ❤️❤️❤️❤️”

0523181927a~01-01

I was interested. No, that’s not correct, I was hooked. I mean look at that initial photo. Also I know my friend and I knew she would knit her vision into a stunning reality so…of she went.

0703180954-01

And Susurrate was born!

I received the first swatch picture in the middle on May and then this finished one on July 3rd. Now it does not look like it in this picture but susurrate is not a small shawl. It uses close to 1620 yards of Sock that Rock Lightweight. And that my friends is a lot of stitches to put together to match a vision. I loved being a part of this process with her, hearing her ideas, thoughts and the challenges. Watching her find what worked and what did not and then how to implement it all. I know from my own creative process that matching your vision to reality is not always an simple or easy process. It takes perseverance, a good deal of patience and often thinking outside of the box. I know for me I will not let go until I know I have achieved exactly what I had in mind. Often (at least for me) that takes going the extra stitch with a fair amount of ripping back and maybe even walking away to gain some perspective. It often means we have to challenge ourselves to step outside of our comfort zone and knowledge base. Take a look at this design and imagine writing the pattern for this.

Based on everything Cara shared with me about her vision and inspiration ( her dear grandmother) I feel like she knocked this out of the park! I am so very proud and excited for my friend.

I was stunned speechless when I saw that first picture of the finished piece. I knew she  would create something wonderful. I did not doubt it for one second. That said the reality of it is breathtakingly magnificent.

Cara, thank you for letting me be a small part of your process. I am thrilled I got to witness all of this creative goodness from the beginning! I can’t wait to see all of the color variations of Susurrate we all knit up!

1218galezucker_20190416_medium2

Enchanted Forest and Empyreal are the colors shown here

We are doing a KAL!! Of course with such and epic knit wonder the needs to be a knit-a-long! Check out Cara’s rav page for the details. The KAL starts on July 19th . We wanted plenty of time for us to get your yarn to you.

We are running a 15% discount until the KAL starts. The coupon code is: susurrate19

We recommend you order your yarn asap!!

You need a fair amount of contrast between the two colors you choose.

Also  please read what Cara writes about yarn usage. Cara used  4 skeins of Socks that Rock Lightweight but did not have a lot left (hardly any) and had already done the swatching so this does not leave a lot of room for swatching so… please keep that in mind.As always I am available for color help selection.

Here are a few. I am going to pick a speckled or multicolorway and then list a few shaded solids that go with, that give what I think is a good amount of contrast to highlight Cara’s tree pattern.

Chintz and Giggles:  Aquarius  * Cariblue * Bluebird of Happiness * Coral * Ophelia * Lover’s Leap * Pistachio * Everyday Grey * Rosebud * Lean Mean Aubergine * Maroon 5 *  There are a whole ot of shaded solids that will work with this on it really is what floats your boat and has enough contrast!

Oola Pikka :  KMBFLA * Bladerunner * Bleck * Ophelia * Smoke on the Water * Pistachio * Copperline * Oscar’s Grouchy Green * Spruced

Plumpy Sun Angle:  Aquarius * Blue Bird of Happiness * Coral Queen * Harold Purple Crayon * Lean Mean Aubergine * Boysenberry * Green Wing * Electric Blue * Chillaxin * Motley Hue * Marron 5 * Forget Me Not Blue * Sun Salutations

Phaedra: Coral Queen * Robin’s Egg Blue * Shoqua * Maroon 5 * Moldy Peaches

Okay more to come…

1048galezucker_20190416_medium2

I need to post this.

We are dyeing and shipping as fast as we can!! Our new dyer shows up at the end of the week !!! Yay!!  I can’t tell you how excited we are.

I am so grateful to Kalia, Sarah and Crystal for being a true team!

All the things…

Happy Sunday!

I spent yesterday teaching all dyeing, color, and all about yarns and fiber. It was a really wonderful class where everyone was curious and intrigued by what it takes to color fiber and yarn and all the ins and out and why and hows.

I feel so lucky that I get to teach and share what I know. So much stimulating discussion and fiber fun! I think my favorite part is that the space I make allows people to create and I get to be a part of that creativity and joy.

Color makes people happy and coloring yarn really makes yarn loving fiber artists happy. It was a busy week this week playing catch up and Desiree was out sick most of the week so that made more work for me so to be honest I was not really looking forward to working Saturday too. But…15 minutes and I have forgotten all of that and off we go on our dye journey of the day.

Everyone created stunning skeins of yarn and walked away happy and hopefully a little more color confident and empowered.

Lots and lots of color!  There’s still room in the rest of our dye classes for the summer if you’d like to join me for color and fiber exploration. Also if there is a class you like so see me teach please do let me know.

And…since we are talking fiber and color!

I’ve been thinking about our spinning club for awhile now and how I miss sharing the yarn making and fiber dyeing joy. So…I am re-inventing our Rockin’ Whorl Club by adding other fiber/spinning experts to be a part of our learning journey.  I know…it’s a good idea isn’t it. We get to experience different takes on spinning and yarn making. Diverse perspectives always good! Our first theme is color!!

I hope you’ll join us as the spinning wheel turns on our new fiber adventure!!

Okay my lovelies I will post more tomorrow but I need to go meet Karen and get some fresh air before Monday hits tomorrow!!
