a thousand words worth
Isn’t that how it goes? A picture is worth a thousand words.
I am hoping this is in fact true. I have been trying to find some quiet moments to share with you all that is going on here. From all the beautiful knitting we are receiving for the museum, the stories and the community spirit that is creating it,
.
to seeing the banners and sign in front of the Convention Center,
to receiving the Proclamation from the Mayor declaring next week Sock Knitting week in Portland,
to all the meetings and the work, the seemingly never ending work.
Top it off with a bit of hysteria laced terror and well what a ride.
Steph and I keep equating this experience with childbirth. The similarities are exact and we are now in the pushing phase and pretty soon we are going to have a brand spanking new little Sock Summit.
Uh OH here comes another one gotta go

Can I knit socks in my meeting with “fearless leader” on Tuesday, and tell him that it’s ok cuz the Mayor said so!! And then take a picture of his face! Hah!
Way to go DFG!!! What an awesome set of images to mark the grand occasion that will be Sock Summit!!
I love that your mayor’s name is Sam Adams!
OMG! OMG! OMG!!! I’m so excited and knowing its officially sock knitting week makes me a bit goose-bumpy proud for you and Steph!! This is going to be amazing!!
Now, push…..
Nice! That just makes me smile to know that Sock Knitters are being taken seriously in Portland. You and Stephanie and all the SS teams are incredible to have taken this from a crazy-what-if idea all the way to fruitfulness. Portland won’t know what hit them!
That. Is. So. Cool.
I love that the desk looks just like mine. My husband just said today he can’t wait until there’s a little more room around here. I told him to wait a week!
I’ve definitely been thinking about this experience for me and by business as child birth. My dreams have been along the same line. Truly an amazing experience. I don’t know if you all will ever know how much this opportunity means to all us little dyers. Thank you.
WOOT! WOOT! I am SO stoked for this! Everything on my mind now is about Sock Summit. I know it will all go by way too quickly, though. Hang in there, ‘cause it’s gonna be a great time!
Now if only we could get the logo displayed in lights on the Morrison Bridge! ;D
I love our mayor!
you and stephanie are my heros. (and a shout out of love to the Entire team). wish i could be there. <3 ya all.
Eeeee! I’m so excited! I love that the mayor declared it Sock Knitting Week. That is so cool! See you soon!
This means we really have to do this thing now, doesn’t it?
Can’t wait!
I just am so very proud, excited to see the happenings, that have been going on..If there is something WONDERFUL just let Knitting woman do it..
THANK YOU SO MUCH..ST-1 and ST2 for being the leaders…See you at the summit..

small windows into one’s life.
seeing the sign and thinking of you makes me think of Washington crossing the Deleware – a moment in history
Oh my gosh!! If I wasn’t excited before (which I was), I’m *excited* now!! I can’t believe Sock Summit starts in less than a week!!! Can’t wait!!!
Wow, this is so exciting! I’m so happy for you guys! It’s HUGE! And for good measure: !!!!!
I have goosebumps from reading this post, seeing the signage, the mayor’s letter (awesome that he’s named Sam Adams) and since I can’t be there, I plan to make this Sock Knitting Week in my neck of the woods (which happens to be THREE different states this week as I travel for business, work in one state, and live in another) so consider Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois COMPLETELY ON BOARD!
I still wish I could go to Portland…
Congratulations! This is going to be the most amazing thing ever! I love the signs. I love the proclamation. I love the entire SS team.
But most of all I really, really, really love the post-it mobile. You guys are totally rocking the office supplies!
My boss keeps shaking her head as if I’ve lost my mind whenever I mention this. I wish I could send her this blog post, but she’d just think Portland had lost it’s mind.
I’m SO GLAD Portland thinks this is important. I’m so glad you and Steph (and all of ST1&2;) have worked so hard to birth this. It’s going to be amazing and I.JUST.CAN’T.WAIT!
Hugs(1 million)
Reading the Mayor’s proclamation made me cry.
You should be so very proud!
So who is gonna teach the Portland Mayor how to knit socks?
I LOVE the Mayoral decree! Nice work, ladies!
And I love living in a city that truly prides itself in creativity!
I am giddy with excitement over next week. Can. not. wait.
Thank you for every ounce of yourself you have put into this. I can’t begin to imagine how much work it has been. You will be very proud Mamas when it is done!
Please pardon my language, but:
F*ckin’ A, ladies! F*ckin’ A.
You are all nothing short of history-making.
OMG this is really REAL, isn’t it? I can’t wait to hop on a plane next week and be a part of history in the making!
I bet those sidewalks will be swarming with sock knitters by this time next week…..
It’s so fun to tell muggles about this: “I’m going to Sock Summit!” “What’s that?” “See, I won the Sock Lottery…” “There is a Sock Lottery?!?” “Yep, knitters are coming from all over the world. They’re even taking a stab (hee-hee) at the Guiness Book of World Records!” “The Guiness Book does KNITTING?”
Maybe we should alert the media. People just don’t get it. We need to get all CNN on ‘em.
Way too wonderful! I’m so excited.
OMG – I just got warm and fuzzy all over! You and Stephanie are so fabulous! This is going to be fabulous! I’m having sock summit dreams:)
Push mama, push:)
Really! Sock Knitting Week! I got goosebumps looking at your photos. I feel really, really lucky to be able to be part of this amazing birth. You guys amaze me!
I can hardly wait!!!! Thank you for everything you have done.
Wow Tina! I got goosebumps reading that proclamation! That is so amazingly awesome. I’ve already got butterflies in my tummy and can’t wait to land in Portland on Wednesday for the Summit. Great job to you, Steph and ST-2!!
I too am goose-bumpy and teary eyed. I melted straight into the floor seeing the Sock Smmit banner and name in lights (and not because of the heat or a hot flash this time). It’s the same feeling I have when I see sheep in a pasture. I get this goofy smile on my face.
Pure unadulterated happiness. In our own backyard.
It’s going to be awesome. I can feel it in my bones right to the core. TOTALLY AWESOME!
Oh. Wow!!!!!!!!!!
This is going to be so awesome! Keep the pictures coming so us non-attendees can get a virtual fix.
I love the mayor’s proclamation—I embiggened it to read –WOW– go forth and knit everywhere–it has been proclaimed! I will be with you in spirit–knitting on my heirloom “tomato” socks in San Diego—I love the ocean.
Yes! I am there with you Tan, keep the photos coming so we can all see the history being made! I am just sick that I can’t be there. So, I ordered more STR a couple of days ago and I am going do nothing but knit next week to soothe my soul. I wish you all the best and I will be watching the news and Twitter to follow it all! Knit on! And tell Meg Swansen I said hi………
Whereas DH decided that diving was good and
Whereas traffic and construction zones were light and
Whereas DH loves a good bookstore
It is hereby declared that we will arrive in Portland tomorrow before Powell’s closes. See you soon.
(I have some treats in the car for all of ST1 and BMFA folks. No brownies though 🙁 maybe next camp.)
oh boy, i hope everyone in the credit card dept at your old bank gets a PERSONAL invitation and and SS banner hanging near their office window!
I may not be there in the flesh, but I am one of the many who are with you in spirit. Even if we can’t all join you, our hearts are overflowing with the joy you are bringing to our knitting world. You guys rock!
I now know exactly where the “Post-it notes from the edge” photo was taken. muwaaahhhhaaahahhhahha!!!!! See you tomorrow.
DON’T FORGET TO BREATHE!!!
You have restored my faith in our mayor!
Way to go ST-1&2;! Y’all ROCK!!!!!!!!!!
Just came back from the Sock Summit and it was the best knitting event that I have ever been to. It was extremely creative and extremely wonderful. I certainly hope we see it again in my lifetime. I loved it. Exhausting, overstimulating but wondrous all the same. If you put this together .. Thank you it was an inspiration. Happy Shaw Trapp
Great job Tina, Stephanie, and everyone who worked on Sock Summit! You guys are incredible. It was worth all your hard work and pain! I didn’t get to take any classes. Just went shopping on Saturday. But it was glorious!
Here’s why I disagree with the childbirth comparison. I have never been pregnant or in childbirth, but I hear this comparison a lot when comparing other big project work, like writing a book. Frequently people say that writing a novel is like having a baby. Except it’s not.
If you are pregnant and sit on the sofa and eat cheetos for 9 months, you will have that baby just as surely as if you work very hard every day on having the baby. If you are in childbirth, that baby is going to come out, whether you want it to or not.
I think the comparison in terms of blood, sweat, and tears might be apt, but the pregnant/childbirth metaphor overlooks the phenomenal amount of daily work– work that you don’t HAVE to be doing. You could walk away. You could go play World of Warcraft for 8 hours instead of this. You could knit! But instead, you focus your time and attention and dedication to this project, and eventually, if you keep working at it and you’re a little bit lucky, it all comes together.
How about a different analogy? Like training for a marathon. If you don’t do the daily work for 6 months leading up, you probably won’t make it to the finish line.
The show was wonderful for me and for everyone I talked to. Thanks so much for your amazing work on this. It was time and effort well spent.
its a best site because no one can give that much of description with clarity unique content…
