did you know???

( WARNING! This post is about poo.)

That bunnies eat their own poo?? They do!
It turns out they have two kinds of bunny poo. One full of waste and one kind full of nutrients, that they need in order to survive ...  so hence the whole poo eating thing.

I noticed the other day that dear Henry was spending an exorbitant amount of time “cleaning” his little boy parts, or so I thought.  I then noticed that when he was finished he was chewing… how odd.
A bunny mystery.
I observed him some more and realized he was in fact eating something. hmmm, what could it be??
I showed Claire, she watched him with me and we decided that this must be what henry was doing. We exchanged looks of dismay and shock and a few hysterical girly giggles.
I looked it up and yes, this is in fact, true and here is why and it is all normal and everything.

Well, all I have to say about it is, Whoa!! Who knew?
I asked my girls and we all agree that we never, ever saw Willa do this. So either we did not notice (yeah, right) or she did it when we were not looking. Maybe in the privacy of her hutch at night. Such a polite girl!
I think I am grossed out about this.  It might be one of those way too much information things---too late now though--- I know.

Maybe I need to try to get my head around thinking of this as recycling or better yet, he is just making his own special “Henry” brand food. Designed special just for him.
Whoa!

This is a test of my love isn’t it?

Comments

oh, they all do it. in fact, if they don’t do it, then you have to worry. one of the remedies for a sick bun is to feed the cecals (that’s what they’re called) of a healthy bun to the sick one.

now THAT’s gross. eating someone else’s poo?

Thanks for sharing, Tina!-lol!  Yeah, sick as I am I find it amusingly interesting and have decided that I will have to have Atticus read this and educate him.  (Yeah, I promote ‘poo’ humor around the house!-lol!  And the sad thing is, I KNOW he will get a kick out of this!)

Well now,....I am very much reassured that my 3 labrador retrievers are actually taking their vitamins when they are out scarfing rabbit droppings. And you thought the bunnies were gross…

There was I thinking my dog was the only animal who ever ate poo.  It turns my stomach when he does it.

I figured, when I found this out, that if I could put up with a toddler who removed his diaper and smeared prune-laced poo on every available surface including himself while grinning up at me happily, I could put up with the bunny-poo-eating thing.

Very bad, young, and stupid mother fell fast asleep and toddler reached out of his container and grabbed very bad, young, and stupid -but arguably exhausted by sleepless toddler and early 2nd pregnancy- mother’s box of prunes from coffee table and ate. every. single. one. while very bad, young and stupid mother slept. Then there was much, much poo. And mommy learned very much about toddlers arm lengths, prunes, and playpens.

And thinking on this, I could run it by my daughter, but as I recall the girl bunnies (hers) was much more discreet than the boy (mine). He was very in-your-face with any and every behavior. Very much a man’s man sort of bun.

Carrie’s got a good (although probably not marketable) idea, Tina!

I think Little Bunnie Poo Poo would go well with our Monkey Kaw Kaw socks.

(Now singing “Little Bunnie Poo Poo I don’t want to see you...")

ah, tina.  somethings are probably best left unshared.  my brother and sil have many bunnies.  i guess it is a good thing that we don’t go visit them very often.

i will no longer be able to look at my skein of bunny foofoo without thinking about poopoo.
thank you so much, irishgirlie!  you and tina have made my day!  ;p

I wonder if my perspective is way twisted when I think wastewater treatment plant field visits (the joys of learning to become a civil/environmental engineer) are much grosser than a little bunny poo poo.  Yes? No?

The official term for it is “corprophagia”.

I can always tell when my puppy has found the freshly laden catbox. She has a cat-dirt mustache. Look out for the straw mustache!

Mmmmm- puppy slup slup
