It is an hour before midnight on the Winter Solstice and I am doing what I have done since I was a very little girl. I am basking in the light of our Christmas tree. The rest of the household is all tucked up cozy and warm in their beds and the house is dark except for our tree. The night is quiet and peaceful and brimming with mystery. The moon shining all bright and full of itself outside after the eclipse the night before. Oh yes,I do believe that is magic. As a little girl I would wait until the house was all quiet and sleeping. I then would crawl out of my bed ( top bunk. no small feat) tip toe downstairs with my blanket find a cozy place under the tree and settle myself in. Surrounded by a huge aromatic fir ablaze in light and adorned with my families history and memories in ornaments. Bliss for this child. I absorbed the peace of all those twinkling lights in the dark, made up stories and finally sang myself to sleep. Winter Solstice embodies the spirit of this season for me. The cold dark night. The longest darkest day of the year, cycling back ever so slowly towards the light. And tonight I’m reveling in the wonder of us all celebrating our own beliefs, with our own traditions, in our own way,the light. As I sit all wrapped up in my blanket in front of this tree’s illuminating light in this darkest of nights.
Happy Solstice!
What a lovely ode to the solstice. I hope that someday you get to see the Christmas Revels, a celebration of the solstice that John Langstaff began 40 years ago in Cambridge, Mass. It’s now an annual treat in many spots throughout the U.S. You would more than appreciate it. Happy holidays!

You remind me of my youngest son. Jeremy always loved to wrap up and then sit in the dark with the tree; he even slept downstairs when he could. I have alternated having the tree in front of the patio doors in the family room or in front of the living room windows. When the kids were small, the tree was usually in the family room. Jeremy would lie on the couch and fall asleep watching the tree. We all remember the night that the tree(untied at the top) came crashing down between the couch and the TV. We all woke up, not just Jeremy. Afterwards, we all blamed the cat! We also always remembered to tie the tree to the ceiling.

Happy Solstice and a Happy New Year!

What a lovely mental image of you under that tree. The solstice and the eclipse combined was totally magical. I was outside for a couple of hours just watching it. The moon was so bright, you could have read a book by it. Clear skies, not cold. The moon glowed orange, then transformed into a rusty orb. One could completely understand how primitive (???) man would have taken such an event for a sign of something.

Happy Solstice! It was cloud here, so we didn’t see the eclipse, but - we have a tree, and share our love and best wishes with you. My family will appreciate what I have made with yarny goodness.

Wish I were there in person, not just in spirit. I swear I’ll make it next year. A handsome tree indeed.

I have a solstice party most years. We build Stonehenge on the back deck and lay Snoopy on the sacrifice stone. We dance to the sun and welcome it back into our lives.
(Snoopy smiles through the whole proceedings and comes to no harm - he ‘lives’ to repeat his performance the next year.)
PS love your tree - especially the ‘star’ at the top.
