In the time a social distancing

Honestly I am not quite sure how to start except from my heart. So…here goes, first I hope you all are taking care as best you can.  I know we are all scared and doing our very best to not only protect ourselves and each other.

As most of you know Blue Moon has been around for quite awhile (20 years this year)  and is my sole support and also a few of our team. In order to protect everyone’s health and well being here we’ve been a skeleton crew for a few weeks now.  It has become clear as this all progresses and our Governors issue shut downs that all of us small business owners are going to have to make some very hard choices. If you own or work for a small business you know how heartbreaking this all is. Small teams easily become a family of sorts. We spend our days together working for the greater fiber and knit good in the world.

I just want you to know where we are in all of this. I am here working as much as humanly possible with the support of  2 part time team members for now. We are so very careful with so very much hand washing, space and cleaning.  Luckily we are rural and on 5 acres in the woods so it’s a bit easier to distance form the world at large. Since I am one of those at risk people I am not working in the same space as others! We’ve gotten seriously creative. We have meetings in the driveway in a big circle. It took quite awhile to get this team together and I am so proud and honored to be able to work with each and everyone! Goodness this is sure not how I thought we would be experiencing our 20th year.

IMG_0438 (1)

We are all in this together!  As I have said many, many times we would not do what we do without you, our fiber loving artists and creators. If you are in a position where can support us and other small businesses you value at this time we are so grateful for that support. Right now we will offering a 20%  gratitude discount which covers shipping costs and a little more. That code is: supporteachother2020

Okay let’s move on.

So everyone is predicting a baby boom in the next year with all of this social distancing togetherness. It’s a fair assessment. I am going to predict a design boom and much sooner than 9 months. I think we are already seeing the beginnings of one. Here are just a few that struck my fancy this week.

Far Away Dreams by Joji Locatelli

I can tell you right away why this one appeals to me. I do love a plain bit of knitting framed with a bit of lace. Also it’s black and a white speckled with black which is right in my most wearable wheel house. I know I am looking for more simple knits with just enough patterning to keep me engaged and my mind from wandering. I think this fits the bill perfectly. I’m thinking our Feahterlight, Soft Rock or …our La Luna Fingering are wonderful options.  I’m gonna use our Black Onyx and DotCom colors I think. Although really there are so very many color options here like make the lace part darker and the garter fabric lighter or one a solid and one not and one and on! If you need help choosing let me know I would LOVE to help.

Brioche Starter Hat by Raina K

One of the things it might be fun to do during this time is learn a new skill or technique. Right?!  True confessions time, believe it or not, I have yet to master brioche knitting. Even though years and years ago, JC Briar our tech editor at the time turned me onto the joys and wonder of Brioche. I have yet to  give it a whirl so that is my challenge. I thought this hat was super cute and and good beginning point. So that is what I am going to do. I noticed on the pattern that even though she calls for worsted weight that sport weight was what most people were getting gauge with so I am going to use our brand new yarn (yes we have a new yarn) Comet. It’s so lovey and perfect for this project and seriously reasonable priced which is one of the reason we brought it in. Hmm…what colors should I use. Oh and did you see the coordinating pom? Too cute!! I see these as a good knit and save for presents.

Peasant Surprise by Hannah Maciejewska

Summer is coming! The first day of Spring was on Thursday so warmer sunny and brighter days will come! I think this would be a great summer topper of a tank or sundress. It’s light and lacy and sized for pretty much all of us! Thank you for that Hannah!!

IMG_1350_small2

I would use our Soft Rock for this one or our La Luna Lace both are lovely light fingering weights that will not be too warm for those cooler Summer evenings. Actually for the Pacific Northwest it would be absolute perfection!

As I mentioned we have a new yarn. We actually have a few I have just not had the time to get them up.

This is our Comet  in our Sturgeon Moon colorway. Comet is a sport weight and is quite a lovely yarn. I wanted a yarn that was seriously suitable for baby knits and also blankets. I really wanted a blanket yarn so we could all make moon blankets with the full moon colors. Give it a try and let me know what you think. I think you are going to love it!

And look…

Colorway shown: That 70’s Skein

SilkMo is back finally!! We have made a few changes so I am looking to get those up on the website also. We are calling this one SilkMo Lace since it is a bit finer and softer too!! Also we are offering it in either 300 yd skeins or 900 yards skeins. I know a lot of us are holding the finer silk mohair yarns with other yarns in bigger projects so we though the bigger skeins a good idea. I might go ahead and get this up as yarn choices and then add the colors as we go. So you would be able to order it and just type in the colorway you want in the comments section. hmm…

okay my friends that is a lot and I have yet to get out to the barn today to dye so I need to wrap this up.

We are all in this together and …We’ve got this!

Love!!!

PS: Love notes are welcome we will be sending a bunch out your way. Also looking at setting up some live knit session via zoom and or FB.

Knit on!!

“Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn’t hurt the untroubled spirit either.”
Elizabeth Zimmerman
We are all scared and worried and rightly so. There’s so much  unknown about this virus and that leaves us with little to now control which we human beings are very uncomfortable with.
Our best tool besides hand washing and social distancing is our craft whether it is knitting, spinning, weaving, crocheting, sewing… we create one stitch , one row, one seam, one thread at a time.
What a blessing!!!
We are so equipped for this moment in time.
We will get through this all together. We are each  and everyone one if us a stitch that makes up such a beautifully strong and resilient fabric. Our diversity is our strength!
Stay safe my lovelies and wash those hands.
Oh my goodness is anyone else surprised at the amount of times we touch our faces!
love!

Rose City Yarn Crawl and Leap Day!

IMG_0396

I have a lot of fun and colorful things to share but first a few things that happened this week that kind of put a wrench in things.  On Monday our website and email was down for over 24 hours. The company that hosts all of our online stuff had a whole data center go down. Yeah that was fun and nerve wracking! Also put us a bit behind on our customer service. Sorry! So then a few days later the shipping service we use also went down. It’s evidently a theme this week. Also down for a little over 24 hours. This one was a little more complicated though. They also did an upgrade that was not supposed to happen for awhile that we needed new shipping labels for. Which means we can’t ship until they arrive. I kid you not. I spent hours on the phone with many supervisors and you would think they would take a box to the PO just to shut me up but alas no, not so much.  Because of this we could not ship sock club as planned and all other orders are also waiting.  And yes I tried to get these elsewhere but of course they are the only ones who sell them. It’s been a frustrating week. I also have been trying to finish up spinning and have one wheel down and the other’s drive band snapped on me so it is just one of those moments where things go awry. Wonder if it has anything to do with it being Leap week! Hmmm….

IMG_0585

On the positive side of things I actually finished a knit. I know!!! Miracles do happen. It’s a marled cowl in our Featherlight. I wanted something that uses scraps. I love it!

Okay so this coming week is ROSE CITY YARN CRAWL!!!!

I’m so excited! We’ve stocked Twisted with all kinds of colors and yarns and also the two colorways we did for them just for the crawl.

I am so thrilled with these two colorways. I think they are a great addition to our Blue Moon’s chicken line of colors and Twisted’s exclusive Blue Moon colors.

There are three lovely designs using our colorways! You can check them out here on Ravelry

Which came first? by Cheri Clark in both a wrap and cowl version! So pretty!

There will be samples of these in the Special colors at Twisted!!

Stunning designs thank you to both Cheri and Malaika for creating these lovelies for us to knit and celebrate our fine feathered friends, our crawl, Twisted and our community!

ok I am off to run errands before it gets too crazy out there since it is Saturday!! Fingers crossed that nothing else goes down or breaks.

Take care!

All we need is love…

and knitting!! Oh and maybe chocolate and coffee of course.

We have some very heart-centric new colorways. We’ve been playing love songs for over a week in the dye barn in honor of Valentine’s Day. So much fun so here’s a few new hues with love and heart break theme.  I am by far the oldest person on our team mostly it is not an issue. I think they keep me young. I do feel it in different ways on some days and music is definitely one of them. I do love spreading musical genre’s love and appreciation. I do feel like I have spent a good part of my adult life widening the musical scope of those around me and having mine expanded.

I hope everyone has a lovely day today!

We are prepping for the Rose City Yarn Crawl dyeing a massive amount of yarn some in special crawl color for Twisted.

Poncho’s are back!! Actually have been back for awhile but I did not say anything cause I did not want to jinx it. I do love a good poncho they are just so very cozy!! And look at this beauty!!

I am a big fan of Noriko’s designs. I love the elegance of this poncho and it looks like a super fun knit! Also it has eyelets which just make me happy. It uses a DK weight yarn so is perfect for our CAKE DK or Silk Victoria.

2.2.2020

Happy Universal Palindrome Day!!!

IMG_6905

This year is just so full of all kinds of wonder which is great because we kind of need it! There has not been one of these since 11.11.1111 which was 900 years ago. And there will not be another for 101 years in 12.12.2121 and then again until 03.03.3030.

Why do I feel that it is so magical?  Well… happenings and experiences tend to be special in their rarity. And don’t you think it’s those things that we do not experience all the time that inspire us to notice and then hopefully appreciate the wonder of the world we live in. It’s that ability to see and feel these magic moments that give us the energy to not just get through our days, but to be fueled to create and change our world.

Anyway…we are celebrating this day!! I can’t believe we are celebrating our 20th year this year of all years.

Speaking of magic have you seen some of the sweater designs being published?! Oh my there is most definitely not enough knitting hours in the day.

Okay let’s start with this beauty!

IMG_4536_medium2 IMG_1707_medium2

Water Bearer by Jacqueline Cieslak

So pretty! That brioche front panel and collar are just lovely and then the contrast between it and the stockinette is just poetic! I think this will look good on all of us! She had this cropped version and a longer one. I do love choices!! It’s knit in a DK weight ~ seems like everything is right now. So CAKE DK or Silky Victoria or La Luna DK or Crackpaca all would work for this lovely!  (photo credit JacquelineCieslak)

And then there’s…..

Joji Locatelli and her Pebble Tunic

I am a sucker for a tunic! Add pockets and I am a goner. Tunics are just so cozy and I am big on my clothing being cozy! Pebble also uses a DK weight yarn. The gauge on this is pretty open so be aware of the fiber content on the yarn you choose so you don’t get a tunic that grows! We are recommending our CAKE DK. (photo credit Joji Locatelli)

Since we  are on a DK roll …. Rose by Andrea Yetman    A lovely pullover with seriously nice lines and look at those sleeves!! Perfect for our more neutral shaded solids. Also I think I would choose our La Lune DK for this one. (photo credit Andrea Yetman)

And here we step outside of our DK and knit creative box with this super cool ( I’m in love) crocheted cardigan in fingering weight yarn!!! Just about any of our fingering weight yarns would work here but I think I would choose La Luna again.I think the silk component would make this super dreamy!  (photo credit 2020 MEZ Crafts UK, Ltd.)

Well my friends that is quite a lot of creative fodder!!

In case you missed it the 2020 Rockin’ Sock Club Space Odyssey sign-ups are live!!!

I do hope you’ll join us!

Monday musings

Screen Shot 2019-12-22 at 9.21.18 AM

I have a lot of knitting and fiber news I want to share with you. However in the past week there has been some pretty heavy losses in the world. And I just want to take a moment. A moment to acknowledge the souls that we have lost, what they have shared with the world and those who loved them. A moment to send love and compassion to their loved ones who are heartbroken and grieving. A moment to remember that we are all in this together doing the best we can with what we have to give. All of this can change in a heartbeat so a moment of gratitude for all of my moments! Always tell those whom you are lucky enough to love that you do. Thank you all for being such a colorfully diverse and lovely part of our journey!

When I opened up my emails this morning this note greeted me. I was already having quite a few feels and this brought me to tears, joyful life affirming tears. I love so very much that instead of taking her mother’s yarn and donating it she kept all those cherished skeins and learned to knit socks. I heard a talk recently between Oprah and Dwayne Johnson where he talks about the loss of his father and how he felt grief but also that the relationship was evolving to another level.

Hello! Almost 4 years ago mother, Liz passed away suddenly. She
was Sock club member. We all loved her knitted socks. When I began the
process of cleaning her apartment, I found all her stashed yarn and
patterns. I immediately became a sock knitter. Almost 4 years later, I am
still completely in love with knitting socks and have improved my skills.
I am still working through all of her yarn. I have enjoyed many of your
patterns and fibers. I have come across “t’s not all about me brown Silkie
Socks. I can NOT find this pattern in her binders. Is there any way I can
get this pattern from you??

Have to say in my sock knitting journey, I have knit with other brands- and
nothing compares to the socks that rock. I promised myself I would NOT
purchase more yarn until I worked through her stash. I am just about ready
to become a socks that rock member in my own right!!

Thank you for your help.
2nd generation sock knitter.

So beautiful the ways we find to carry those we love with us.

Dawn Henderson is one of our very talented knit designers. She lost her partner  and best friend suddenly this past week.  Please send whatever love you can her way. There is a GoFundMe set up for her and her children. You can also support her by purchasing her patterns which are all kind of wonderful.  She has designed some seriously cool socks too

okay I have to find out what is making the odd noise in the laundry room. Fingers crossed.

Eclipsing Wolf Moon in Cancer

IMG_6769

Friday was the first full moon of the decade and also a penumbral lunar eclipse. I think it’s the first of  six eclipses, three of which are penumbral this year. What a great way to ring in the new decade and…to start the beginning of our 20 year Anniversary Celebration year.

20 years old in the year 2020 and… because all the things are lining up ~Pantone made the color of the year blue just for us!!

I am predicting a very Blue Moon year!

Karen was here this week for a visit and we made all the creative plans for the year. Well not all but quite a few. We even put it in a weekly calendar spread sheet which made us both very happy. Karen because she loves nothing more that creating spreadsheets and me because I do not and well…you get it.

I loved creating the monthly full moon colors last year so we are going to continue with those, along with whatever over celestial events that happen this year. In order to spice things up and to distinguish our 2020 full moon colorways from 2019 we are looking at the astrology of each full moon. Yes we are ! And… we have a plan for all of these colorways that I have been stewing over for awhile now so am pretty excited that we are making it happen. I am not going to mention again until next week since I promised. And the picture below is not a hint at all. ;0)

So stay tuned!

Hey did you see Thea Colman’s newest cardigan, Gin and Juice? I think she released it last weekend. It’s stunning and a perfect design for our beloved Targhee Worsted. One could also use our CAKE Worsted but I think Targhee would be divine!

Look at that cable pattern!! Such a classic silhouette and I so love that wide collar. A design that is going to look good on all shapes and sizes. That collar though…so sexy. Thank you Thea for such a stunning sweater for us to knit and wear.

Over the holidays besides other year end work I spent some time cleaning out my spinning bag and stash. I finished some yarns in progress and when I went to store them came across this beauty. My fist ever handspun. Yup, I still have it. I really should make something out of it. Maybe weave some chair pads. Hmm… . Anyway we just wrapped up the 2019 Rockin’ Whorl  and I was feeling a little sad about that so all of this inspired me to put up the next trio and to switch it up a bit with more texture and a lot more creativity.

I think most of us tend to keep spinning the same yarn and while it is relaxing and meditative it does not challenge us so…we are going to add some twists, and coils and loops and whatever we can dream up to our yarn making. The first shipment will leave here the first week in February. I have help this year with the lovely Michael Kelson who teaches spinning here in the Pacific Northwest and is as talented in yarn making as he is a lovely human being!

I do hope you will join us. I’m wanna see what yarn making mojo we can create together!!

the Rockin’ Whorl Club 2020 is live!!

It’s supposed to snow here this week which I am not really looking forward to. There’s been a lot of hype about it and everyone is stocking up. Anyway fingers crossed everyone stays safe.

I am working on some neutrals that I am pretty thrilled with but am having trouble naming them. Here are the first three. I was going to ad them to the coven series since they are kind of tinted greys but it does not feel right. Maybe you have some thoughts on what they should be. There will be at least 8 in total so… a theme would be nice. Maybe after women in science.

I am in love with these and they look especially wonderful on Soft Rock. Anyway I would love your feedback.

2019 sock club is wrapped up! yay!!!!  2020 will go up for sale in a few weeks so look for that. If you are not on our mailing list email me and we will put you on. info@bluemoonfiberarts.com

Silk School of Yarn notes are going out this week. Karen had a family thing which has slowed this part of the process down.

Socks that Rock that Rock Stars ship at end of week!

If you have a FO you would like to share. If you could post it to instagram we will repost and share with the world! If you are not on instagram and still want to share email it to me and I will post and share your creations. info@bluemoonfiberarts.com

Okay my friends I am off and running today there is much to do. I am celebrating 5 years since my last chemo treatment with my dear friend Gail who quite honestly I would not have made it through without. I think it is important to honor and celebrate these milestones. A good day!

I am going to leave you with this pretty which shows a bit of all the color that came from our instagram pics this year.

Have a great day!

Winter Solstice

Yesterday was Winter Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere which means Winter is in fact officially here!

Screen Shot 2019-12-22 at 8.25.34 AM

I was going to write this yesterday but I’ve been limiting my screen time the past week since I fell and hit my head. I know…such a klutz. I’m fine so no worries. I have fallen a lot in my life so I am used to the aftermath and this one was not too bad.  I do not have the best balance and I move way too fast for my own good. Winter is here which means rain (which makes slippery mud).

Lots and lots of rain!

They’re calling the storm currently blowing through the PNW right now an “atmospheric river”. Really?! When did this current trend of giving weather systems dramatic tag lines happen. As one who names things I totally get the appeal and it’s a hell of a lot of rain for sure and in a short amount of time. However, let’s be real, it is not a flippin’ river and dramatizing just makes everyone nervous. I think maybe the fact that I find this irritating is either a sign on my age or that I have not had enough coffee.

All of this rain is filling all of the creeks and rivers so do be careful and maybe some of us should slow down.

On Winter Solstice I built a fire , made a big pot of soup, lit all the candles and I spun some lovely BFL Tussah in our Super Worm Moon colorway which is one of my favorites. You can see why…

IMG_6344

IMG_6350

I am mesmerized by the color combinations and as you can see here I am also knitting some Ripple in it along with the spinning of it. Look at it in these different fibers. There’s BFL Mix roving and BFL Tussah and Silk hankies. I am going to spin all three and ply then together making a stunning yarn!

IMG_6610 (1)

When I am all done I will make sure to post pictures. I’m so excited!! My girls can’t be here for the holidays this year which is a bit hard for me so the time I am not spending with my son and daughter-in-law I am filling my time with creative joy.

I know from my own experience that this can be a hard time of year for a lot us. Please know that you are not alone in this and that there is love and light for us all. If you need to reach out I am here please do! I would love to hear from you. tina@bluemoonfiberarts.com

IMG_6600

Of course I made a Winter Solstice colorway! It’s a grey that grades from dark to white with shades of blue speckles. I’m pretty tickled with it. I hope you like it. So many celestial colorways this year. It’s going to be hard to top in 2020 but do not worry for I have a plan ( gleefully rubs hands together). After all 2020 is our year. We turn 20 so it’s 20:20:20 for us which has to hold all sorts of magic.

I am going to leave you with some Solstice thoughts and work on my to do list for the day. I hope you all have a lovely Sunday. I will post again during this week!!

Nature remembers what we humans have forgotten:

Every cycle must return to stillness, silence, the dark;

Every out-breath requires an in-breath;

Every outreach turns back inward to  source and begins again;

From endings come beginnings and from

the darkest night a new dawn.

Take care of your dear selves!

Yarn crush!

Okay so I know I have been on and on about this yarn but seriously it’s the bomb!! It’s on my mind today because there’s loads of it drying in the barn.

IMG_6521 (1)

And yes…it’s Ripple!! Look at that!! Click on the photo to make it bigger and look at all of that color and textural wooly wonder. Just stunning!! Every time one of us walks by the skeins drying we stop and pet and oogle and some of us ( and we all know who) even bury their faces in it for a good wool whiff.

IMG_6522 (1)

One of you you creative souls ( you know who you are ) is making blankets ( a lot of them) with our Ripple friend so we are having a good dye time! And now I totally want to knit a blanket for myself our of some of our moon colors from this year. Wouldn’t that be stunning?!! It’s super cold so what better time to knit a warm, soft and cozy blanket? And soon it is January, where we knit for ourselves,  is quickly approaching so look at that.

Maybe we should have a January BKAL Blanket Knit-along.  What do you think?

IMG_6350

Anyway…Ripple is stunning and I am feeling blessed and pretty thrilled that I have a nice big stash of it in the dye barn! lol

Thanks to our lovely Karen our yarn sat in  the same room this week with Natalie Chanin ( Alabama Chanin) so… that happened!!

It’s Saturday morning and I have 2 sets of dyer’s notes to get out along with my other weekend catch-up tasks. So my fiber loving friends I am off to the barn to take yarn pics and then it’s all the writing! I’m gonna make a bunch of tea and build a fire in the fireplace and curl up with my laptop and write all about color, yarn, knitting, socks and… .

Have a wonderful weekend!

New Color!!

Happy Friday!!

I am writing to you from my son’s house with a pup cuddled up beside me!! Can’t get better than that. The past two weeks has been a whirlwind of filling orders and making new colors.  When inspiration hits I do with it, mostly because I don’t really have a choice. I am usually consumed until I get it all down on the yarn.

I am working right now with a lot of subtle hues and expanding our Shaded Solid range. Some of those will not be up for a little bit longer. I need to finesse the photography. I have added a few though as you can see below. Also a few new colorways for this Christmas season.  I do love this time of the year and the holidays with it. My favorite aspect of the holiday at this time of year is being with my family and friends and spreading the love.

For me gratitude is a daily practice, it’s not an easy one some days but it is one that is expansive and enlightening and enriches my life in ways I probably am not even aware of.

Today I would like to thank all of you for being a part of our Blue Moon family and our fiber community at large. All of the beautiful and diverse souls that are who we are. One of my favorite parts about the world we live in is how different we are all and yet the same on so many levels!! Thank you for sharing all you with us!!  We see  and appreciate you!

Okay….here we are!!!

So… my favorites are ALL of the plummy ones. I just love them!! And they would make a stunning fade of some sort! I’m pretty tickled with Snow Cone. Pine cone colors with white and a wee bit of grey for the snowy sparkle. I am in the process of adding these so if a few do not show yet they will be there this weekend!

And coming soon to our Coven Collection!!

These three do not have names yet and I need to do the photography over so you can see the subtle shading better but here they are in all of the neutral beauty!!

Okay so the family is awake and this a family morning for me so I am going go have coffee!!!

We are running offering a 15% off Special code this weekend as a THANK YOU for you patience and support this year. Starts now and is good until Tuesday! Oh and we are well stocked with yarn!!!!!!!!!!!!

That code is: thankewe19

Sock Club we are shipping next week!!!

Happy Friday!!
