What are you knitting?

We’re all holiday/gift knitting. On deadline no less.  So… whatcha knitting?

I’m not doing a whole lot of holiday knitting this year.  I hurt my arm in some way, at some time. Don’t even know. Just working around it.

Here is what I’m knitting.  A very simple rib scarf with some lovely BFL mix I dyed in Jabberwocky and Steph spun up.  It’s easy but a slow go because of the whole arm thing but also because I’m enjoying knitting it so very much. I just don’t want it to end.  I’m loving the colour changes ( see that lovely brown) and the feel it as it slides through my hands and onto the needles.

image

I stop a whole to love and pet on it. So much so that Sophie made a comment along the lines of if I ever wanted to finish this I might consider not petting it so much.

image

I love the fabric of knitting. I love watching every stitch build on the other to create fabric. I think this one looks like a furrowed field.

What are you loving to knit?

I’m knitting Irishgirlieknits Uncle Frank socks, but in the style of EZ’s moccasin socks, using an STR HW mill end that looks suspicously like Raspberry Moose.  I’m loving a) how quickly they are growing b) the subtleties of the color changes and c) knowing that they will not be destroyed by the recipient, who must have uncommonly sharp soles on her feet, as evidenced by the total annihilation of last years’ socks.

I stop to pet my knitting all the time too– no shame in that, especially since in this case, it’s your creation twice over.

At the moment I am not petting my knitting so much as my 3 skeins of unwound LSS in Winter Solstice. I am in love with both the fiber and the colourway. I suppose I should order at least 1 skein of Woobu so I can see and feel what all the chatter is about. Do I need 2 silvery sweaters? Perhaps!

Tina, I’m so sorry you are hurting. I finally had my entire left shoulder replaced(I’m titanium woman) after a terrible traumatic event that involved myself, my 22 foot Tanzer sailboat, and a distinct lack of functioning brain cells(those would be mine). No more shoulder problems-I had an inspired surgeon. Now, air port security is another matter(LOL).

  4. I’m obsessed with my Smitten Mitten Garland! Trying to get them all done in time for tonight (3 mittens to go!). http://yarnmiracle.com/2010/12/01/decorated/

Then I have a pair of socks and a sweater. We’ll see.

  5. I finally pulled out my “happy go lucky” yarn (since it’ll be available for public consumption shortly I’ll hopefully escape my usual rare gem harrassment!!) and am happily knitting (and petting) away on the Helix socks by Sean Riley…I’ve easily adapted his pattern for STR-H to STR-L, and I’m not on 0s!! smile smile

Sorry to hear about the continued arm pain…No fun while knitting :*( I think “petting” rests are in order to prevent further discomfort wink!!

    Furrowed fields is right! smile

  6. Working on guy scarves at the moment. Then I’m going to salvage and reknit a pair of colorwork socks I did in STR Heavyweight years ago, 24K and one of the mineral colorways. They never fit right so I never wore them. Plan to frog and re-knit a pair for a guy who lives in Vermont and really needs thick warm socks. Must not let STR go to waste.

Sorry about your arm! I would have advice depending on where it’s hurting.

I’m knitting a pair of secret Christmas socks for my husband in September’s sock club yarn (he really likes the colour, but thought both the patterns were a little ‘busy’ for him).  For me, I am busy petting My Blue Heaven STR in Anne Hanson’s Pea Vines shawl pattern.  They work wonderfully well together, and I am using beads in place of the nupps, as suggested by Anne herself.  Very pettable!!!

Hello, dahling! As per usual, Sophie has a point. That girl!

I am on knitting FIRE – handspun hat, handspun cashmere cowl, multiple kureyon hats, kid silk haze cowl pattern from Churchmouse, felted elf slippers, “Baby Yours” and eighty BILLION leftover sock yarn baby hats in different STR colorways… yes, I am still sleeping but my work? Seriously slipping!

I love the colours you dyed the fiber – very fall-like! Hopefully your arm will get better soon.  I think that you’re just getting out all of these injuries/flu bugs/colds/etc in 2010, so you can be fancy free in 2011.

I’m currently working on a pair of Holidazed socks in Hollyday and it just tickles me senseless when I think about it. I was out and about over the holiday weekend and really had to hold back from telling everyone I saw that I was knitting ‘holly/holi’ socks.

I’m still petting my skein of silk yarn that I spun up and dyed at the retreat.  I have a friend who wants to babysit it sometime…..UM NO!!

I also have another skein of yarn that I spun and 3 plied (!)that I’m petting too.

There’s a lot of knitting going on since I’m such and ADD knitter, but no real petting of the knitting right now.

  11. Thorpe hats out of your Icelandic.  Such fun to knit so fast with bulky weight smile

  12. I’m knitting two pairs of man socks in the STR I picked up at the barn sale last month!! Yay!

In my opinion STR is not the most decadent for petting, but that’s why I picked it for man socks… it’s the only sock yarn I trust to their great powers of wear-and-tear. Every single pair of socks my husband owns have holes in them right now… (does that make me a bad wife!?).

  13. Did you make it?

It’s very nice and looks like warm.

  14. Knitting a rare Traveling Woman right now. For me. SSSH. Don’t tell.

I seriously need a list of yarny gifts that I need to make. Cuz I think there are more than I know. Scary just the thought of it.

I do have one Christmas stocking to make for a new baby.  The new daughter-in-law got one last year to match the whole family’s.  Never a pattern I would have chosen but you can’t change vintage. At least I have the reverse engineered patttern that I made last year!

    Happy knitting!

PS. I may have rewarded myself with pond scum and puck’s marine silk last night! hehe

I got myself some Quinault Canopy in Twisted for my birthday and I’m knitting it into a Saroyan scarf/wrap. And I LOVE it more than I can say … STR, Woobu, and now Twisted … the Blue Moon addiction gets worse and worse.

  16. At the moment I’m knitting a cowl and mitt set designed by Anne Hanson out of a cashmere and mink blend.  The swatch knitted up and washed up into this glorious fabric that is so reminiscent of grannie’s old mink coat that you couldn’t stop petting!  It’s such a joy to work with this yarn and I don’t want it to stop!  (As an early Christmas gift, my DH bought me some of the same yarn to make something for myself!  YIPPEE!  I have even longer to knit with this stuff!)

As a reward to DH I am going to make him those socks out of STR that I promised a year ago!  But he’ll have to wait until after New Year’s. I have more petting…ummmm…knitting to do first.

Love the cats – they blend in well with the knitting – just finished my traveling sweater and am working on 6 pairs of socks (with STR of course) for the holidays – just started so I suspect I will be a bit late

July Dusty corner socks, with a few “personal designs”, aka goofs that I didn’t feel like frogging. Can always play the game “which of these stitches doesn’t belong here?”.

Sarah: 2 sweaters for you, 2 sweaters for me, and Shawnna wants to knit a sweater too. Won’t we look cute at Sock Summit 2011? I wonder how many others we can convince to join the bandwagon? Cheers, Hazel.

  21. I’m plowing through holiday gift knitting, but I take a break now & then to work on my Ishbel in a merino-cashmere-nylon blend yarn from another indie dyer.  But what I really want to do is to start a pair of STR for me & Stephanie’s Pretty Thing in a Pygora-Gotland blend I got from Kristine when she opened her new shop location for A Verb.

I’m knitting my first pair of socks for my son.

He’ll probably only get one under the tree, and a promise of the second before I cast on something else…

I’m using your “Socks That Rock” medium weight in Black Bird.

I’m making the Turkish Bed Socks pattern from Church Mouse for my daughter.

I have a hat going for my son too in case my sock gauge is way off and I have to give them to my husband who wears a size 14 EEE shoe.

I’m also needle pointing a Christmas Stocking for my new daughter in law, just like I did for my own kids.

Now that I’ve written it all down, I’m panicked.

Beautiful!! I love the texture of the handspun, and the colors are so warm and cozy. Memories of jumping in the leaves of New England Fall before they are burned at the curb. Those days are over.

I am on my second pair of drafted silk hankie mittens for grandchildren to put inside their ski mittens. I finished the infant bonnet and booties out of the hankies Steph provided, and will give those to my niece who is expecting in April. Made my husband a pair if 14EEEEE socks from hand-dyed sock candy (had to steal a little extra from the sock candy surprise RSC skein(GG)). Working on socks for son (I pine 4 u) size 12 (relative piece of cake), and son-in-law( size 11, from RSC stash, not started yet). Will give the mittens I knit in stranded merino and silk to my daughter. My daughter-in-law will get a silk scarf-yarn not decided on yet. I am spinning a silk/merino blend in the colorway Bitterroot. That might be the yarn…Can you see the influence of the silk retreat?

Blessings on you and your arm. Take care of yourself.

    Hugs, Sarah

  24. Hope you feel better soon! That’s no fun. 🙁

I realized suddenly that I had not even started knitting Christmas presents. Oops. I am knitting a simple cabled guy scarf for my son and a Harmonia’s for his Totally Adorable Girlfriend (TM). Both in LSS. His in Chestnutty, hers in Strange Brew.

It’s going to be tough to give either up. Maybe they’ll let me borrow them back?

Oh… and I have a pair of socks on the needles—STR Light in Jabberwocky.

I am making a Daybreak shawl out of some STR medium Bramble Berry.  What a dream!  I also just finished a Haruni made with 1 strand of Alpaca with a Twist Fino and one Strand of Silk Thread II in Blue Brick Wall.  It is so light and lovely and beautiful (and I don’t think anyone is getting this one!)

  26. I don’t do holiday knitting in the traditional way. I don’t do well with deadlines! I’ll knit things that end up as gifts, but I decide after they’re done.

I just finished a couple entrelac scarves (and wrote a pattern for them). I love knitting entrelac, they’re little squares, one bite at a time. Now that I’m finished I find myself strangely at loose ends, missing those little squares and not ready to start something different. I may have to make another one.

    Knit on!

  27. I’m knitting for charity:  An Elizabeth Zimmerman Ribwarmer in your Icelandic, in Lunasea, for the BSD Project.  I think I can just squeak one out of two skeins, if I’m lucky.

As for the sore arm, ice is your friend.  My physical therapist gave me a reusable icepack recipe:  Gallon freezer ziploc bag, 1 cup rubbing alcohol, 3 cups water.  Make 2 and lay flat in your freezer.  It won’t freeze solid, but gets very slushy; it’ll stay cold for hours inside a terry handtowel.  Ice and Aleve do wonders along with a little time.  Feel better soon!

  28. Hmmm – Yes Holiday Knitting thats right.  I am working on a pair of fingerless gauntletts. I need to start two KoolHaas hats, and I am halfway through a Hitchhiker Scarf/Shawlette.  I am also considering a pair of bunny slippers as a gag ha ha…..  Now to think of something for my 7 year old boy:)

Let’s see, Hat for daughter’s FIL is done. Socks for Dad still in progress. One of the older sock club socks is 3/4 ths done another one is over half. (I think of a pair of socks as a whole so 1 sock is half done with the socks.) Still have a lace project I’m working on and then there is the spinning which may become a hat and gifts for my knitting friends.

I also love the images you put in here. They fit so well with what youre trying to say. Im sure youll reach so many people with what youve got to say.

I’m knitting thrummed mittens for my DD who is currently walking around a cold climate college campus trying to keep warm.  They are the warmest mittens I can make.  And as far as I can figure out they aren’t commercially available- which, I hope, will make them more special.

Having a great time knitting Christmas present hats out of various bits of handspun that’s been languishing around here for years.  Not dopeslapping myself for failing to think of hats sooner, just enjoying the colors and good wool.  Also have completed some gift-bound Continuum thigh warmers out of STR heavy in Thraven, zowie.  Socks and Noro scarf still in progress.  I love the holidays!

Hats! I’m obsessed with a new idea and since Thanksgiving I’ve finished one in BFL, am almost done with the second one in WooBu (it has beads and I adore it) and plotting the third in Marine Silk. I have no idea who’s going to get them, but that is in no way effecting my desire to knit them.

I knitted something for everyone on my side of the family…the majority with BMFA yarn.  Socks for most, a Shawl That Jazz in Twisted Rook-y for my mom and some Sockhead Hats in STR for a couple.  It kind of breaks my heart to unwind my babies and give them away to non-knitters but I dream of Christmas Eve when they all unwrap their socks and put them on at once and squeal with delight!  Hopefully my husband can arrange that for me! wink
