What if hummingbirds could knit?
Wouldn’t that be the strangest sight. I am sitting here on the back deck where we have quite a few bird feeders. I am answering emails and working on a new design. I am also being bombarded by hummingbirds.
There are about ten of them and they chase each other through the wood slats and around my head and one was just hovering by my ear. All just a bit disconcerting even for me,lover of all things feathered.
As I watch them it occurs to me that if they worked together with those long beaks and their zippy ways, they could knit like the wind. Teeny tiny little things like skull caps for the flight south. Ohh, and nest liners. Knitting hummingbirds, hmmmm. Maybe they already do knit a bit. I bet they do something similar in their nest building. After all there are those cool weaver birds.
It has been a wildlife filled weekend here. We have twin deer babies and one of them sniffed my hand. He also gave me quite a look of disdain afterwards, nonetheless pretty cool. He probably did not like the vinegar smell I seem to carry with me.
Then while weeding in the garden I felt something by my foot .I was so sure that I was going to be freaked by a snake and it turned out to be a baby bunny sniffing my toes. Awww … so cute.
Lots of babies here, even some of these dive bombing hummingbirds are babies. A good season for babies.

My mom has some hummingbird feeders on her porch in the mountains of central Arizona. Every summer there is a “rufus” which is what my dad always called the dominant bully-hummer. I don’t know if it is a real bird-term, but they are uber-aggressive, fun to watch, and are brilliantly colored, like STR as a matter of fact! During the peak of the season she has to fill the feeders twice a day. Wish I could burn calories like that with my knitting.

Well, I don’t know about hummingbirds, but that dragonfly on Gail’s blog sure could knit I think! Baby deer, baby bunnies…very cool!
Your talk of humming birds reminded me of the intense shimmery colors of their bodies. Deep pools of turquoise and green. Deep and mesmerizing red. And the buzz that seems deafening when it’s otherwise quiet. Hours watching them suspend in mid air. And when they stop flitting for a brief second, and you can see their wings, it’s as if you’re caught off guard to find that they actually look like birds.
I work full time from home and I have a hummingbird feeder right by the window where I work. All day they fly in with their zippy little wings. I love to watch them hover and zip around. Sometimes they dart around together. Hey…you could almost do a “hummingbird” colorway based on Serina’s comments.
I was actually thinking this last night Laura. Wondering why I had not already done this after observing these guys for years. We have the Rufus ones really pretty and would add to the fall line-up quite nicely.

Synchronicity. I blogged about my hummingbirds today as well. No baby bunnies sniffing my feet–although I did once have a momma possum stalk off in disgust, stepping on her clinging babies’ tails as she walked away.

We only have two, ruby throats. They are adorable, and make babies annually which is too cool.
Wow, a baby deer loves you! We know deer come around here at night, because Trusty finds the little presents they leave behind (and because we hear the neighbor swearing about what they’ve done to his yard), but I never see them.
Bunnies, baby deer and tiny little hummingbirds, sounds like the tripping on acid in Disney World colourway. It’s a contest right? Did I win????? Do I get a prize for a good colouway???

We always have hummingbird feeders. It is kind of scary the first time they buzz close to your head. We had some last year that would briefly land on you if you stood still by the feeder long enough.
Hummingbirds would, of course, use only the finest spider silk to knit tiny little nest-cozies to keep their babies warm. Perhaps they could use little rose thorns for needles? After safely blunting them, of course. But white silk, although beautiful, might be a bit boring after awhile. You must dye some bright colors for them, dear Tina, to match their gorgeous feathers.
I have often wondered when you would capture the hummingbird’s beauty in yarn. Whenever I see all the different birds visiting my feeders and houses and baths in my New England back yard, I see so many different colorways. You could create a whole new color line which would please and amaze many bird lovers. If anyone could achieve this, it would be you!
Okay, I immediately think of food and how I would translate the hummingbird and colors:)
