A Total Eclipse of the Sun!

A Total Eclipse of the Sun!!
On August 21st there is a Total Eclipse of the Sun which hasn’t happened very often and certainly hasn’t in this way, with the sun is rising over our wild and wonderful Pacific Ocean. It is a good time to be an Oregonian!
Since the best place to see it is on the Oregon Coast. It’s pretty exciting! I wish I was going to be at the coast to see it but not willing to sit in traffic for days!!
Of course Blue Moon needs to document such a momentous occasion with a colorway. How could we not?!!
Starting at one part of the skein is sunny bright and then sky blue and then we slowly getting darker and darker with less and less sunlight and more moon shadow ending with that very small ring of  endless light.
I think this is just might be my new favorite colorway!!
So much so in fact that I decided to make it into a gradient kit!!
eclipsogradient
and then I also dyed it in Super Sparkle cause duh!!!!
eclipsogradient_sparkle
I love everything about this and if I didn’t have the Barn Sale and Dye Days to morrow I would curl up in a chair by a fan and knit!!!!!!
We spent all day today prepping the barn for our Barn Sale and Dye Day. It’s a great excuse to do a deep clean so that is done for a little while.  All of the sale yarns are hung. I find this the hardest part, especially the Rare Gem wall.
Oh my… all the colors. I told Sarah she was in charge of not letting me get anywhere near them. She is very pregnant and stern so I think I’m safe.
I started the indigo vat and have the dye tables all set up! We are raring to go.
All we need is you!
Here are the directions again:

Blue Moon at Coastal Yarns!

Saturday August 12th

Trunk Show and Yarn Tasting

12:00 to 4:00

**********************************

On Saturday August 12th I will be at Coastal with all kinds of Blue Moon knit samples.

There will also be a yarn tasting with a bunch of our new yarns!!

And…if that were not enough knit fun I will also have a brand new Eclipse colorway!

I would love to see you and your Blue Moon knits. I love show and tell.

I hope to see you there.

School of Yarn!!!

okay first things first!

I just walked out to the dye barn full of women to check on a few things. All of the dyer’s asked about our lone hen who has been sitting on a few eggs trying to repopulate our flock all by her lonesome. So…not one to ignore a cosmic hint, I thought why not go check on her and see what is what.

and then there is this!

I almost do not have the words to express how excited I am about this new venture of ours! I have been wanting to do something like this for quite awhile and either I did not have the time or the energy or the team. There is a time and place for everything right? Well, it seems the time is now. The stars have finally aligned to shine their blessing on our little School of Yarn!!

Truly, I could not be happier.

First of all I get to work with two of my favorite people Karen Alfke and Maggie Baird on a project that we all feel passionate about. Both of these women bring years of knowledge and experience that are the perfect balance to my own.

There are a few things in this world that I feel like I am really good at and one of them is yarn. I know yarn!  And… I love it! I love everything about yarn from sheep to sock, silkworm to shawl.  I’ve been working with yarn as a dyer for about 18 years now and still… every single morning I walk out into that dye barn and breath in all the wool and vinegar fumes and my heart expands with it all and I know… I am exactly where I am supposed to be.

Actually, it is one of the better parts of my day before the business of running a dye/yarn company hits the fan. I am usually the only one there (butt-crack of dawn!!) for a good hour or so.  It’s just me and my yarn. There is yarn hanging from the rafters and drying in the breeze from the fans and there’s color just about everywhere. I say hi to my skeiny friends and start the water running for all the washing and soaking of the yarns we are going to dye that day. Not a bad way to start the day!

Okay, so I am running out of time and quite honestly steam and believe it or not, words. It’s been a few weeks of writing which is not my best thing, so it takes a bit more out of me then say, dyeing does! As with the sock club, which is 12 years old this year, and with Blue Moon, I believe that expanding our knowledge base and building and appreciating our community betters us individually and as a whole and this is also our goal with our little School of Yarn.

I do hope you will join us on this new adventure of ours.

As always if you have any questions please email us at info@bluemoonfiberarts.com

Don’t forget that next weekend is the Barn Sale and Dye Day event here in Blue Moonland. The Dye Day part is full. We will have an indigo vat going which anyone is welcome to use.

all the knits…and a few other things

Okay, so it is Friday and if you were sitting here with me you would hear the generator humming (dull roar actually) away, diligently keeping our little dye company going.

It worked!!

They did turn the power off all week long from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. We worked in shifts because there is only so much of our operation a generator can manage. We did not run out of propane or patience. Although there were moments when I was seriously worried about the patience. Like yesterday when I was picking up yarn and the water guy who was resealing our holding tank said he needed to come now and that meant no water.

It felt a bit like the powers-that-be were trying to see what exactly they could throw our way that would make us stop. Turns out we are a resourceful bunch and not much stops us. Well there was that 3 feet of snow but I feel like that is fair. I am super proud of my team!

I am also really looking forward to next week when I do not have to go out to the barn before the crack of dawn to fill everything with hot water and make all the dye for the day and then be on call for 2 shifts of worker bees.

I might just sleep all weekend!!

I am still working on new colorways! I know… I promise next week! Right now there is a new one up that I created for Lorilee Beltman’s ~ On a Lark Retreat ~ that I taught at last weekend. Such a great time. I love teaching  so that part is always fun.  Lorilee held her retreat at the oh so lovely Island Wood on Bainbridge Island and she really creates a great space for knitters. So much fun and learning and relaxing and knitting was had by all. And what a wonderful group of knitters!! Oh my goodness.  I hope she invites me back to teach again next year.

The color way is called, On a Lark!! I love how it turned out, don’t you? I took the inspiration from Lorilee’s artwork for the retreat. It’s looks really pretty all knit up too!

As I said in the newsletter we just sent out there are so many wonderful designs to knit these days. I wanted to take a moment and tell you about some of the talented folks I get to work with.

Nona Davenport owns All Wound Up Yarn shop with her mom Leslie. They are lovely!! Nona designs! She designs for our sock club this year. In honor of their shops 2nd anniversary I made them a special colorway and Nona designed Firmament, a super cute anklet sock and then Malaika Gabriel designed a cute crochet shawlette called Waxing Moon. So much lavender knit goodness!

I have 2 books. If you would like to win one then place a comment in this post and we will randomly pick two lucky knitters!

Notes from the ledge…

I am having one of those weeks. You know the ones where the shit just keeps hitting the proverbial fan and you are still reeling from one disaster when another problem arises and needs your attention and only your attention only right now!!!  I am most definitely having one of those months, with this week being seriously the most dramatic and kind of surreal to be honest.

It started on Sunday when I spilled a cup of water on my laptop. Yeah!!!  Of course it stopped working and I had a moment that I am not real proud of.

My son the techie told me to turn it off and teepee it and let it sit for 48 hours and then we would see. Then, in a vain effort to talk me off the emotional ledge I was teetering on, he told me not to work cause he had a ThinkPad I could borrow. So funny. I am a Mac user – it is all I have ever used. That is not a trick that this old dog is capable of learning. I was pretty touched that my son thought I could, though.

Okay so in waltzes Monday and I am trying to get stuff done with no laptop.  The phone rings and it is our electric company, Western Oregon Electric Cooperative, with a taped message informing me that July 10th to 15th from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm they are shutting off the power so they can work on the substation.  What the hell!!! So I call to verify and sure enough that is what they are doing and we have no recourse. Just slam, bam no power ma’am. I suggested that they might want to take the word ‘cooperative’ out of their business name.

If we were not the creative, problem solving souls that we are this would shut us down for the week. However we are creative and there are generators and we are going to work in shifts so we do not put too much of a load on the generator. Yay team Blue Moon!!! Such rock stars, these women I work with.

Okay, so we are feeling a little more optimistic and like we might have that covered. (We’ll see how the generator holds up.) Then lo and behold our work horse Dell laser printer dies. It dies DEAD!! Yup. And you know I can’t even complain, because that thing has worked its arse off for us for about 10 years. It’s just the timing of it all, right? Almost like someone does not want us to dye yarn for knitters. It’s really starting to feel that way.

We use this printer to print our yarn labels and all kinds of other very necessary things. I am waiting to hear from the repair guy on a printer they might have we can buy or use. I am hoping I hear from him before I leave here at noon today to go teach a dye day at Lorilee Beltman’s On a Lark Knitting Retreat.  I know…that stars are obviously aligned for some wickedly weird happenings.

Underlying all of this running-a-yarn-business drama is some personal stuff that has me at the very least distracted.

I feel like I am leaving something out but  I need to get to the fun exciting part of what I have to tell you today. Fingers crossed that the force is with us and our generator next week!

Look: we have a new yarn!!!

IMG_2186 (1)

PLUSHY!!!  Three plies of 100%  superwashed 20 micron worsted weight Merino goodness!! There is a whole lot to love about this yarn. It is squishy and soft and lofty and elastic… . The stitch definition will bring a tear to your eyes.  I see all the knits with Plushy.
100% SW 20.5 micron Merino – 3 ply
Length: 330 yds / 301 m
Weight: 9.5 oz / 270 g
Gauge: 16 to 20 sts / 4 inches (10cm), US 7 -9 needles (4.5 – 5.5mm)

Plushy will be priced at $27.00. Right now we are offering it at $22.00 so we can all get our holiday knit on. Maggie and I are so going to knit sweaters and blankets out of Plushy! We were hatching a plan yesterday. We are adding it into our line-up now since we are starting our Holiday Gift Knitting KAL on our new Facebook page this weekend. We are starting at the top with… hats!!!

We have added in 5 of our favorite holiday colorways to the website, rotating these in and out until we add them all back in the fall. Can you you find them all?

Another special we are running this weekend (or until we run out of yarn!) is on our beloved Marine Silk Fingering. (I might have found an extra box or two in the storage pod.)  20% off  and the coupon code is:  MSF2017

I have a shawlette out of this yarn that is one of my favorites to wear just because it feels so very nice. All that silky shimmer makes it looks pretty wonderful too. Oh.. and the drape: my, oh my!!!

Here are just few lovely shawls folks on Ravelry have knit with our Marine Silk Fingering:

AnnaW’s Spotlight:

And have you seen all the beautiful Reynas on Ravelry? Noora Laivola designed it to make the most of 400+ yards (so one skein) of fingering-weight deliciousness like our Marine Silk Fingering… and to show off gorgeous multicolor colorways as well! Sounds like a win-win.

Okay a few things before I dash off to pack the car and head out to Bainbridge to set up for tomorrow’s class.

• The Rockin’ Whorl Club next phase goes up for sale next week!!

• We are working on getting out all the yarn gifts and such that you won for my birthday fun and games. We have not forgotten.

• Also check out our new group on Facebook – we plan on having all sorts of  colorful knit fun there!!

I am sure there is more I had to share but the ticking of the clock is getting louder so I am going to go pack the car…  Have a lovely weekend!

Friday!!!

Oh my goodness but it has been a week! So much drama.

I am most definitely looking forward to a quiet and peaceful weekend playing catch up and sitting and knitting.  Maybe a walk or two along the river and some gardening but other than that it’s me and my knitting and a movie.

I was hoping to have wip pics of my Breezy Cabana shawl but my skein of Heckley Speckley mysteriously disappeared and I had to dye another one and I got busy and forgot to dye another one and I did not want to start until I saw those two colors together so here we are.

Here’s is my wip shot, my skein of Grawk patiently waiting for it’s hue date who is super late to the cast-on party. It’s darker than this picture is leading us to believe!IMG_2127 (1)

Ain’t no party like a cast-on party! ( Like I said, it’s been a week!)

Okay so this week because it is the 4th of July and we’ve put our Super Sparkle on special for a few days. 15% off from now until July 5.

IMG_0005 (1)

So get you sparkle on!! Coupon code is in fact:  getyoursparkleonjuly4

You might want to stock up on your favorite colors. We are going to be starting our holiday gift knitting support group in the next week or so. What says ” Happy Holidays” and rings in a new year better than a bit of sparkle. Not much really!!

Since we are talking about specials this is the last day to sign up for sock club if you are interested.

Also for all of you  already in the sock club the 20% part of the discount turns to 15% on the 15th of July so if you want that extra 5% discount now is your time!

Our Tour de Sock coupon code also expires this weekend.

I am making lots and lots of new colorways. Some for the sock club so you can’t see those some for stores and even working on the Rose City Yarn Crawl colorways for Twisted! Portland Waterways is the theme and I am having a tone of fun transposing that to yarn.

Here’s one of the new colorways that will be coming your way soon! It needs a name. Thoughts??

IMG_2132

See this lovely grouping of colorways?

I am currently possessed by them. Seriously so. They are not my usual personal comfort colors but they just make me happy. So.., I think I am going to knit them for someone I know that will love them ever so much which kind of makes this a twice the love project.

I do think I will take our that extra sold peach on the end. It’s not really needed. So from left to right we have, ummm…. Sun Spots, Wallflower, Razzle Dazzle, #shepersisted, Bet you thought this skein was about you., Goodby Kitty and Baby it’s cold outside.   This should be all kinds of fun!

Okay my knitterly friends stay tuned for we have some wicked cools plans coming your way!

New colorways are up!!!! ( Actually I thought they were but they are not. They will be in a few hours)

I am a big Guardians of the Galaxy fan so of course I had to translate that love onto yarn! I have been torturing everyone I know with ” I am Groot” texts. Baby Groot is beyond charming and seriously adorable!

I have also added a new Tipsy to our Tipsy Clan, Delilah Dixie Tipsy. Delilah Dixie has a a fiery rebellious streak that is sure to burn a little if you happen get on her wrong side. Otherwise she is loyal to a fault and the fiercest friend a girl could ask for!

And.. last but not least my ” I made it to 60 bitches!” birthday colorway.

" I made it to 60 bitches!"

” I made it to 60 bitches!”

As usual there’s a bit of the back story on this one based on a text exchange with Shannon.

IMG_1823

I went with it! Stared with the color that flows through my veins Pond Scum and added it’s bestie Deep Unrelenting Grey and then went from there riding the line between muddy and sassy! I think I got it. I love it quite a bit and…it goes with last years birthday colorway depraveDyer’s Birthday Sprinkles pretty well and is most definitely pond-scummy dirty as Shanno suggested.

See?!!!

The mug is one of the mugs in our giveaway!!!

I am reposting the fun and games info from last week!!!

Okay now unto the fact that on May 29th I turn 60 years old. I know…how did that happen. Actually I am pretty thrilled to be here to turn 60 so I am celebrating with everything that I have and I would love for you to join me. Some of what I have a lot of is, love and gratitude laced with a fair bit of quirky.  So we are going to be spreading both of these around in the next week.

One of the ways we are going to do this is that everyone person who order from this moment in time until midnight May 31st gets a love note postcard from me in their package with a 10% off coupon good for your next order!  We will also be randomly choosing from all of those orders 6 of you that win a skein of Socks that Rock of your choosing in a wonderful JAMPDX mug. We will also be choosing another 4 that will win a skein of our Yaksi Fingeringweight yarn in the color of your choice in a lovely Queen Bee bag! I know! I totally want to win these!

And…if that were not enough and it is not.  We are also doing daily instagram giveaways with sharing themes like favo color and movies and such. Here is our instagram feed.

It’s been awhile since we had a tell me your color story and I will make you a colorway game so we are going to do that here on the blog.

What you do is tell me a color story.  I love a good story!!! I am not going to give you any limits this time. It can be any kind of story as long as you are descriptive.

Try not to make it too long. I am in the process of training three new dyers so my attention span is a little low at the end of the day. Also that whole turning 60 thing!! You have until June 1st. Then I will choose 4 of these stories and I will create them in living color on yarn and then send you a skein!!

Okay I think that covers everything I wanted to share.

I hear the ocean calling and who am I to keep the ocean waiting?!

Thank you all for all of the love and birthday wishes!

Have a great weekend!

A few good things….

Hey there,

It feels like a long time since I posted. I don’t think it actually has been it just feels that way. Life has been full and busy and a little crazy and when that is the case time seems to flow quite rapidly.

I have a lot to I want to talk about so I am going to jump right in.

The barn is just humming along with all kinds of color joy. We are busy dyeing all of your beautiful color combo’s for the Buffy KAL. We’ve already shipped out some of the early bird orders and will be shipping more out tomorrow and Monday.  If you would like to join our slayer of a KAL there is still time. The 15% coupon code  ( which you get when you purchase the pattern) doesn’t expire until this weekend on the 22nd which gives us plenty of time to get you your yarn for Shannon’s May cast-on date.

I can’t tell  you how thrilled I am that you all love my Buffy colorways as much as I do. I love that some of you are ordering the whole set. I would too. I might be keep the set I used for the photos in a nice safe place where I can see them. I did the same thing with the Ravens. Actually I still have the original set of Ravens.

Anyway Shannon and her lovely husband Stefan took some seriously fun photos. I so wish I could have been in on that photo shoot!

So much fun and what a stunning and sassy shawl! Just perfect for a little late night slaying. Slay Me KAL pattern page.

If you need color choosing help you can look at what we have put together here on this post. Also you can email me at info@bluemoonfiberarts.com                                                    I am always happy to help with color choices.

Speaking of color. I’ve been getting a whole bunch of requests for color help for Andrea Mowry’s  lovely Fade knit series, So Faded and Find your Fade.  So I am going to put together a few color schemes so look for those next week.

Okay so I know I promised a Dye Class/Camp Schedule quite awhile ago. I am in the process. I just have some family stuff I need to work around so I have been trying to firm that up before posting dates.

We will be having our yearly Dye Days and Barn Sale in early August this year.

In early July ( 6-9)  I will be on Bainbridge Island at the magical Islandwood with Lorilee Beltman teaching eco printing!!! I know. Pretty exciting.

You can read about all of fun and details  Knitting on a Lark retreat info here.

Here is my class description.

Color Magic

Join me as we explore the magical alchemy that is color on fiber with plants. In this three-hour class we are going to be experimenting with Eco Printing, otherwise know as “botanical contact printing”.
Petals, berries, seeds, bark, leaves, roots and stems hold all sorts of color mysteries. We are going to explore these mysteries with some creative mordanting and a little steam on: a cotton hanky, a wool yarn blank and also a skein of silk blend yarn. I seriously can’t think of a better place to learn more about plant color and printing than on the island oasis that is Island Wood.
What you need for this class is a sense of adventure, a love of color and an apron or a t-shirt that you don’t mind getting messy. Dyeing is a creative messy business!
You will leave with a new appreciation of the plants and a hanky, yarn blank and skein as affirmation that you can knit and wear!  Since our time is going to be full of dyeing we will also provide you with a set with class notes.
Lorilee has all kinds of other knit fun planned. Plus great food and a cooking class and …s’mores in a stunning place with wonderful people!
I hope you’ll join us for what is sure to be a wonderful time.
 Have a great weekend!

merino madness

Can you feel it? Spring must have sprung! I know, because now I’m casting on ALL.THE.THINGS!

These two bouncy bits of deliciousness are keeping me company in my knitting corner today – so much squishy delicious merino in one place I can barely stand it!

In the foreground is the full-on plump deliciousness of CAKE DK, on the needles as the tender beginnings of Hunter Hammersen’s Compunction mitts. (Those slipped stitches that look like diagonal twisted stitches? Genius!) Can’t wait to knit up the whole set, hat and mitts – and by then it will probably even be warm enough in this leftmost upper corner of the US to not need them for morning walks. Oh well; that’s a decent tradeoff for warm Springlike weather, eh?

And in the background? My first chance to take La Luna DK for an official spin! Tina and I prowled cowl patterns on Ravelry, and found a super-fun one to whip up as a sample for you lucky ducks going to Maryland Sheep & Wool next month! The colorway is “Calendula” and it’s the happiest of slap-happy yellowy-orange shades (and that’s saying a lot from this connoisseur of orange!).

I gotta say, if April is still in lion mode where you are, you can beat the where-the-heck-is-Spring doldrums with some bouncy, plump, squishy merino. The only way to make it any better? YouTube videos of baby lambs. Because there’s no such thing as too much bouncy, happy merino-sheepyness!

Happy spring holiday weekend, everyone!
