Do you know what today is?
Today is one of those days that has after burners. I’ve had this sneaking suspicion all morning that I’m forgetting something really important. I know one thing I haven’t forgotten though. Today is August 6 and on this day one year ago Steph and our team of awesomeness ( Debbi, Rachel, Joann, Debra, Lisa …) were on our way to the Oregon Convention Center to get the Sock Summit show up and running.
In some ways it feels like it has been more than a year ago and in others it seems like it was just yesterday. I think this is true for big life moments and this most certainly was a very big life moment for me. The whole thing was from the first tiny spark of thought to signing the last check and mailing it off.
I remember that ride from Scappoose to PDX like it was yesterday. So much excitement laced with a healthy amount of terror. What a ride.
I wish I had time this morning to list all the ways this changed my life, all the ways I feel I grew. I wish I had time to honor all the people that showed up and gave all they had to give. I think I just might wish there was more time, which is really quite hysterical since we’re on the this journey again.
I’m just so excited to be able to do this again with the best partner anyone could hope to have and just the best rock star team.
Stay tuned… for so much more.
ohh no, look at the clock. Gotta run. A wee bit late for a very important date.
Here are just a few of my favourite moments:
Anna Z and Barbara W. chatting for the first time ever.
“You will too wear this walkie talkie Newton. Don’t even.”
All those knitters strolling. Alice and Denny strolling.
The hand jive and poodle skirts and RachelH’s spirit.
Knitters all lines up for our marketplace and Debbi, Steph and I leading them with 99 skeins of yarn.
Being in the same place as all of these amazing women/knitters.
and that’s all. Are we done? Can we go to sleep now?
Cake. How could I forget the cake?
Just a few moments. For every one here, there are at least 20 more.

I learned how to knit a that day Thank you
Hey I made it on your blog. Dancing and having a time. It was fun eh? ….but oh the rash the next day.
I am SO going to make it to the next one. Thank you for braving the first one. Thank you for being willing to go through it again! (Kind of like knitterbirth, wasn’t it? Marvelous and horrendous and worth it, I imagine.)
Oooh, we drove all the way from Illinois to be there, and it was the best time ever. We’ll be back!
Sock Summit was one of the best times in my life!!! Thank you Tina, you are amazing!
I really can’t wait until next year!
it was an amazing event! the energy was just so beautiful. looking forward to next year.
So many happy memories!! Sock summit was absolutely amazing and I can’t wait til next year!! SO proud of you two for creating this awesome experience for all of us NSK’s!
Whew! What a whirlwind ride that was that you dragged us all on along with you! And what a privilege. It was magical and I am so excited and so scared for the magic that the next one will also be. How you ever imagined what could be is beyond me, but how you made what you imagined into reality, that was truly something to behold.
That was The. Most. Fun. Ever. I mean EVER!
haha… my captcha is “possible.” How fitting!
Your life may have changed but all of ours did too. The magic was really there and I think it came from the goodness of your heart. All of your hearts. If we all thought about a dream event with the best teacher we could possibly imagine it wouldn’t have been as great as SS09 was. Nothing could be. Thanks, just thanks.
Wheee!! My picture is on your blog! Doing the hand-jive no less! Not bad for this introverted person! Sock Summit 09 was AMAZING!! I absolutely can’t wait for next year! My birthday is July 31st and I can’t imagine spending it ANYWHERE else!! Love you Tina!

Oh Tina! Thank you for posting these photos. It brought tears to my eyes remembering how amazing Sock Summit was. The new techniques, new friends, new yarns and fibres and most importantly, new memories to cherish. I’ve spent the past year telling everyone I meet how amazing Portland, Oregon was and wanting to go back.
Thank you to you, Steph, and your amazing team of awesomeness for making this phenomenal event happen. I’m looking forward to 2011 and hope to bring a few more Bluenosers with me this time. We’re getting psyched!
I still remember walking into the Convention Center and feeling this amazing energy surround me and lift me up and bring tears to my eyes. So many knitters, so many wonderful vendors, so much happiness, so many awesome socks being worn and knitted on and planned and dreamed of. A year later and the memories still bring tears to my eyes and a warm glow to my heart and twitches to my knitting fingers. I’m going to bring as many people as I possibly can to SS11 to share the bliss! Happy SS anniversary!
Sock Summit was the absolute BLAST! Can’t wait till 2011!
Tina..I’m more than ready..it was such fun and yes, life enhancing..when I read your blog a few days ago..I knew it was time..yes long time knitter can learn new tricks..I did..
I sit here getting so excited..
I”LL BE THERE!!
SS09 was the greatest! I wore my SS09 tee shirt to work yesterday; just a coincidence! I so hope I can go in 2011!
I had never been around so many knitters and never felt so happy! And during the Luminary Panel, I cried the entire time because I couldn’t believe I was there amongst “my people”. thanks to all of you for the wonderful memories!
The Best!
My daughter, Indigo, (now 10 yrs old) went to the marketplace with me last year, and we had a blast together. She was disappointed there were no classes for kids. She’s an amazing knitter and would love it if you would include some classes that kids are welcome in–I think there are other young people, preteens and teens who would be interested. I know my daughter would be happy to give input.
Thanks for sharing your experience and pictures, but I have to ask… is that a wad of yarn stuck to Stephanie’s shoe in the “Breaking Records” picture? Kind of like the toilet paper stuck to your shoe upon leaving the bathroom? Love that Harlot!
Thanks for that amazing convention and all your hard work! Happy anniversary ,it was an amazing experience and I loved every minute of it. Take a boat load of Vitamin B’s and here’s to the next one!
I had the most wonderful time of my life there. And I’ve finally booked my room for next year. (I kept calling and they kept telling me it was too early. The guy last week told me to try in November and I mocked him).
I can’t wait. Even if I can’t get into any classes, I’ll be coming anyway.
Thank you for reminding me of the fun I had a year ago. Sock Summit was a blast…sock camp on steroids, totally. Looking forward to the next one! And taking less classes, so I have time to do more hanging out with other NSKs. That’s the only thing I’ll do differently at the next one.
I still wish I lived closer to be more help. Had the most wonderful time and plan on being there with more open time next year. Thanks for the memories and I hope I wasn’t the one that gave Denny the rash.
I can’t wait to see what is in store for 2011!
Sock Summit was an incredible experience for me in so many ways. It was a huge reminder that there are many fantastic human beings on the planet and coincidentally, many of them knit or care about someone who does.
